I'd only heard a couple of her songs, and I'd liked them. Owl City is bad because it is insufferably, unapologetically derivative. Is that what you're seeing here, and if so, to what is DelRey's music owing?

the wait has been very painful

it actually feels like i've been waiting since the self titled since i barely listened to Sisterworld. people tell me i'm too harsh on it but it lacks the innovation that i love them for (you could say the same of the s/t so idk). this is why i'm so excited for the new one! sounds like they're still doing what they're great at but with an (almost) entirely new palette.

I really like the new song. Gives me quite the Joanna Newsom vibe, which I didn't expect. It doesn't strike me as a single, at least not in 2012. Given how long her record label held the album, I had figured they would release something more poppy, or perhaps Adele-y. Then again maybe this isn't the actual single.

YUP. Like it a lot. Not terribly different from Santogold in spite of the long interim, which is slightly off-putting at first, but after letting it sink in for a bit, it's just as good and consistent as that album was. There was a time where I don't think I listened to anything but Santogold for the span of several months, so I'll be hugely impressed if I can spin this thing even half as much.

i really like this! i can't find any word on who's produced it but could jon brion be back? sounds like him to me..
it is reputedly the single and does seem an odd choice but i could imagine this being the album mix and there being an alternative version. or not, maybe no one involved in this cares too much about radio play/new fans. it really sounds like she's actively avoiding a big hook that's just on the fringe somewhere. still very excited.

I'm really enjoying recent production trends, too. It strikes me as heavily indebted to recent drag/witch house as well (which is in itself indebted to Houston-based production, but with a more pronounced focus on gloomy and haunting atmosphere).

Yup. I definitely prefer that over the more recent, standard hip hop (and r&b) takes on house/electronic which often come off lazy. There's a lot of interesting new producers out there who are sampling a wide variety of stuff to create some of the most atmospheric hip hop I've heard in awhile

Witch House is the poorest-named genre ever - it's not even 4x4 which is the most fundamental principle of house music. Houston swag rap is good though.
