Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude
I just got back from seeing Car Seat Headrest and holy shit, what a show. I'd been really excited for the show since listening to the Teens of Style album for the last couple of month which felt like a mix of Japandroids, Beck and something damn old-school with depth, great vocals and guitar jams. The show was just wow, it was exactly why I go to live shows. I told someone once that the worst type of concert is one where the band sounds so spot on they sound exactly like the album. They didn't get it, why wouldn't you want the band to sound spot on like the album? Well, if I wanted to listen to the album real loud, I could do that at home.
I grew up on the days of bootleg live cds and websites storing dozens of live versions of every song. If the songs all sounded identical to the album, there'd be none of this. Nah, the best live shows and the reason those live concert cds existed was because of all the unique live spins the bands would put on their songs. The great 10 min guitar jams they'd make out of a 6 min album song; the acoustic songs; the live raw feel that gave each show a unique feel you'd never get anywhere else or again. Yeah you could listen to the cd/tape/mp3 afterwards, and it'd remind you of the show, but it'd just be a reminder of a great show you were at.
Car Seat Headrest was totally that. Amazing, amazing guitar jams, songs starting acoustic and then smashing into full band with the last 1/3rd, on stage antics, new material, charisma, and just a whole lot of really really good rock. The band is extremely talented and I wouldn't be surprised if they become big over the next bunch of years. Definitely recommend checking them out (especially live) if you grew up on rock, grunge rock, garage rock, or any great jamming bands.
