Currently listening to The Chronic samples. I didn't know there was a Zeppelin sample on the album; gonna have to pull it out again

Listening to Dark Night of the Soul streaming: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=104129585

Mostly quite good, and a nice vibe to the sound of the album.

I was a big Catch 22 fan back in the 90s but I didn't pay much attention to what happened to bands in the 2000s.  So when I was making my 90s ska/punk throwback thread on gaf I found out about Catch 22 -> Streetlight Manifesto.  Luckily since my brother is 10x more hardcore ska/punk than me having been in 2 ska bands, been a radio dj for kuci, been a written music reviewer, he has every ska/punk album ever made in his collection (most he got for free from reviewing/radiohosting) and so I just went over and ripped a copy of their first 2003 album and have been digging it.  "We are the few" and "A better place, a better time" are really clicking with me.  Gonna steal their 2nd album from him tomorrow mwuhahaha.

Here are the songs in question:

no joke one of my absolute favorite ska albums

it's great to hear ska that's about more than drinking and trying to get laid, which is a trap that much ska falls into

Wow bad day for Mos Def, good day for fans. His new album not only got delayed by two months (was coming out next tuesday), it leaked earlier today.

Listening for a third time now. Great production; Madlib :bow

Definitely liking this

Been revisiting "Hounds of Love" by Kate Bush. I wasn't feeling the album when I first got into her but I'm definitely into it now, not sure why exactly.

Rancid was kind of a disappointment.  It's ok, but not really great.
It's hard to keep listening to it because I've started listening to the 2nd Streetlight Manifesto album and it's EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST zooooooomg  :omg

I'm super lttp on Streetlight Manifesto but these 2 albums are A++++++

on an alt-country binge: M.Ward, Bonnie Prince Billy, Neko Case

also rediscovering Sigur Ros. Odin's Raven Magic has to be one of the eeriest albums I've ever heard. Listen late at night with headphones in a dark room and insanity becomes a serious risk.

This is a good album. Very good in fact. It's a much better effort than Octavarium and Systematic Chaos, that's for sure.

The Shattered Fortress, the final song in the Twelve-step suite is really excellent. It maintains the DT staple of having samples of their past songs included. You'll hear a riff from This Dying Soul for a split second or you'll hear the main melody of The Glass Prison in the backround. Really great stuff.

But the best song on the album is the epic finale, The Count of Tuscany. It's kind of cliche to pick the final epic 20 minute song as the best but this song really earns it. This is classic Dream Theater prog-metal that has been lacking in some of the most recent affairs. The final 4 minutes or so are fucking perfect.

My only real complaint I can say are the weird "tough dude" vocals that are mixed in. If you've heard  A Nightmare to Remember you may notice the part about 3/4s of a way through where the dude sings "DAY AFTER DAY, AND NIGHT AFTER NIGHT..." it's really cheesy and I'm not a fan of it.

i bought a few CDs last weekend:

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Mahler Symphony no. 7 (Claudio Abbado & Berlin Philharmonic)
Mahler Symphony no. 9 (Simon Rattle, forget the orchestra)
various Schoenberg pieces conducted by Pierre Boulez

so I'm listening to those on the new Sansa Clip I also bought.

Great Escape, Blur - liking it better than Parklife.
Lost Season 4, Giacchino
Animal Notes, Crack the Sky - Love it, but not as much as their debut album.
Derek Trucks Band, Already Free - really like a few tracks on it, others blow.
Black Monk Time, The Monks - great psychedelic rock.
Fear of Music, Talking Heads - dig it.
Definitive Collection, Diana Ross & Supremes - are albums worth getting individually?
Self-Titled, New York Dolls - dig it.
Wizard Brew, Wizzard - good stuff, very raw

I haven't listened to this album yet but I really like Systematic Chaos. Just like this album apparently, the epic closer of that album 'In The Presence of Enemies Pt. II' is the most badass shit ever.

Late to the party.

Still not sure how I feel about this, but it's pretty good, if not as immediately accessible as Acts I and II.

I'm looking at some Celebrity Playlists on iTunes and Mandy Moore has fantastic taste. She likes Midlake and Nick Drake.

Jason Segel too! He digs Leonard Cohen, Springsteen, Floyd. He also listed a song by him with "This song makes me money" :lol
