I dunno if I just grew out of them or what, but they got really grating really fast. And their lyrics are :lol They try so hard.

I still like their first album, though

Speaking of which, what's some good prog rock. I have Court of the Crimson King, which is good but most of the songs are extended for little to no reason imo. I want something ambitious, pretentious, epic etc...but at the same time reserved enough not to put me to fucking sleep with three minutes of bird chirping, guitar feed back, random drumming, or wind recordings

I don't know shit about prog other than the obvious choices. The Alan Parsons Project, Jethro Tull, Genesis, etc. But you probably already know those, and I can't recall any of them having notably shorter songs than King Crimson lol. Check them out anyway.

I've been on a big Mew kick lately ever since someone posted a song off their new album a few pages back in this thread, but I wouldn't count them as prog. Still good, though!

PD:  Procol Harum, Moody Blues, Traffic, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Electric Light Orchestra, Yes.

edit:  Just caught that you want good prog rock.  Well, I can't really vouch for any of it, except to say that most ELO songs at least have a good stretch, and I still get a kick out of hearing "Conquistador".

You just perfectly described The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

:bow :bow2

Also, King Crimson has other great albums geared more toward what you seem to be looking for.  Check out Red, Discipline (which is like crazy New Wave prog and features a new line-up with the guy who plays guitar on Talking Head's Remain in Light), or Larks' Tongues in Aspic.

fucking great.  a lot like the last one...a mix of great short songs and a handful of longer instrumental ones, without a bad song in the bunch.

now listening to some leafcutter john.

Stunning vocals and lovely arrangement

About the singer Melody Gardot

Quote
Gardot was cycling in Philadelphia in November 2003[6] when she was hit by a Cherokee Jeep that ignored a red traffic light. In the accident she suffered serious head injuries. Her pelvis was shattered in two places and spinal injuries meant she was in hospital on her back for a year. She had to re-learn how to do simple things such as brushing her teeth and walking and to this day she needs a cane to walk and, when performing, she sits on a special chair (or stands). Besides that, she also became sensitive to both light and sound and has to wear dark glasses.[4] The accident also resulted in both long and short term memory problems and difficulty with her sense of time. Gardot has described coping with this as like 'climbing Mount Everest every day' as she often wakes with no memory of what she has to do that day. She relies on her supporting musicians to help her remember the songs she has to perform and often has to re-learn them with long rehearsals.[7]

 :( She's 23 fucking years old

Reminds me of Fiona Apple's mellower stuff (Slow Like Honey for instance), which I love.

Good ambient, electronic music here. Check it out.

I know some people don't like it, but I'm fond of the new Muse album. I thought I'd hate it because I heard parallels between it and Black Holes, but I'm liking this tons more. Beautiful album.

Missed this when it first came out. Record store had it on sale.

I don't know why it has taken me so long to get it since I love Metric. Fantastic.

Flawed album, but easily the most involving rap album I've heard all year. Then again, I'm kinda outta the loop hip hop wise.

Great album.

If you're looking for this album to match the first Cuban Linx, which is easily one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, you'll be disappointed. That being said, it's a more than solid album and I'm impressed it's as good as it is. Production is mixed but Rae brings it on almost every track. And like the original CL, Ghost steals every track he's on.

My Beatles journey through the remastered albums has led me here. This album is simply fantastic. Honestly I can't think of an album (off the top of my head) with a better opening six tracks than this, holy shit.

And I'm still going back to Rubber Soul constantly. That's a great album too. Revolver is rather spotty imo

Being a ridiculously huge m-flo fan (it's embarassing yo, but I HAVE turned 2 or 3 of my closer friends into m-flo fans as well), I can't believe I've only just now discovered Towa Tei. It's a really enjoyable, different take on pop / electro.

I want to get more into rock and heavy metal. I know hip hop, jazz, r&b quite well most of the music I listen to these days is electronic, so I've got plenty of that.

Listening to the Beatles albums for the first time has reminded me how much little exposure I have to rock. Suggestions would excellent. For heavy metal, I don't know where to start, but I'm fond of 80's hair metal and Metallica.

I'm giving the following artists a shot:

- Weezer
- Pink Floyd
- David Bowie
- Nine Inch Nails
- Rolling Stones
- Led Zeppelin
- Genesis
- Aerosmith
- Blood Sweat and Tears
- The Decemberists
- Journey
- Blondie
- Kiss
- Sex Pistols
- The Pixies

Alright. The first trip on my journey outside of my comfort zone in the world of rock:

After first listening...

Fantastic. I used to be turned off by Pink Floyd. I don't know or remember why. I guess I heard songs I didn't like or something, but this was amazing from beginning to end.

I can't wait to listen to it tonight while in my bed, eyes closed, absorbing the music and lyrics. It'll be an interesting experience.

I'm on track 7 on Weezer's Blue album.

Don't see what's so great about it at all. I think I'll go back to listening to Pink Floyd and Beatles. The album just sounds incredibly generic and boring as far as debuts go, and compared to other 1994 rock albums like The Bends it's average.

Pinkerton was less boring than Blue Album, but not much. I'm going to assume from the fact I can't get into these two reputable albums that Weezer isn't for me. Every time I listened to one of their songs before, I assumed they weren't, so it seems my assumption was correct.

David Bowie is next on my rock music plunge.

Fantastic album, even if it's way different from the music I'm used to hearing, and makes me curious about what other Bowie I should check out. I'm thinking of Low or Station to Station next.

Is it a concept album?

Well, I'm doing a 2 album test for each artist for now. The ones I like, I'll get the rest of their discography. The ones I don't, like Weezer, I won't bother with after the fact.

I like Ziggy so I'm going to listen to Low next. After David it's NiN.

I love what I'm hearing on Ziggy Stardust. Such beautiful arrangements in the tracks. Moonage Daydream and Soul Love are quite amazing.

I love what.cd for features like this:

Low is kinda avant-garde, especially the stuff he does with Eno, so I don't know how receptive you'll be to that, but it's easily my favorite. Still, it's a pretty big transition from Ziggy Stardust.

Whatever you listen to from NIN, make sure one of those albums is The Downward Spiral. Everything before that has aged poorly, and some of releases after it are way too angsty tweenager-ish.

And yeah, the artist maps on What are fantastic. Those used in conjunction with Last.FM will have you sifting through discographies for days

Totally. Their first three albums (and parts of the fourth) are great, then they go down hill and turn in to some crap band.

There is even an EP where Bowie does the song Without You I'm Nothing with the band.

Damn. No wonder I like Bowie so much. I heart Placebo.
