Why does the new Twilight movie have such a great soundtrack?

Death Cab for Cutie, "Meet Me on the Equinox"
Band of Skulls, "Friends"
Thom Yorke, "Hearing Damage"
Lykke Li, "Possibility"
The Killers, "A White Demon Love Song"
Anya Marina, "Satellite Heart"
Muse, "I Belong to You (New Moon)"
Bon Iver & St. Vincent, "Roslyn"
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, "Done All Wrong"
Hurricane Bells, "Monsters"
Sea Wolf, "The Violet Hour"
OK Go, "Shooting the Moon"
Grizzly Bear, "Slow Life"
Editors, "No Sound but the Wind"
Alexandre Desplat, "New Moon (The Meadow)"

Is there some big joke I'm not privy to or has everyone lost their mind?

Hard to say when he's so secretive about the shit he's working on.  He is releasing a couple brand new songs in a few days, though.

As far as I can tell, yeah.

I guess it isn't such a bad thing when you consider how much deserved exposure it'll bring to many of these artists.  Still, Twilight?  :-\

Can you even imagine yourself buying an album with this cover:

If you like M83 and want something a bit more downtempo and melodic, Ulrich Schnauss would be a good start. Don't really listen to electro too much anymore tho, not sure what's popular nowadays, I guess you can give MSTRKRFT a try, you might like this one:

I wasn't really feeling Vapours past the third song the first couple of times I listened to the album.  I gave it more time though, and by about 5 or 6 listens I started to really enjoy it, sans tracks 7 and 8.  All I can say is give it a few more listens - it's really quite different than what they usually sound like, yes, but I think it's definitely better than Arm's Way.  It's much more of a Unicorns album, if you ask me.

Yeah, it's been getting good reviews so I figure it'll grow on me.
I love Return to the Sea and think Arm's Way is crazy in a very good way.  I think Vapours is too mellow for my tastes though, I got into Islands because of their long always changing rock/pop songs like Swans and by this album I feel most of that is gone.

Still excited to see them at the Troubadour next month though.  Hoping they play some of my favorites from the previous two albums.

What are the best music blogs and podcasts?

NPR has two good podcasts dedicated primarily to new "indie" music (using "indie" as a vague genre label here for the sake of simplicity): All Songs Considered, which generally covers new releases and reissues, and All Concerts Considered, which is recordings of live shows by fairly prominent "indie" (again) musicians.  I'm not sure if All Concerts Considered would appeal too much to folks outside of the MD/DC/VA area since most of the shows are recorded locally at the 9:30 Club and, for me, there's some novelty at work there, but I think they regularly feature some pretty outstanding performances.

It's a podcast as well as a blog looking at your post above.

They rarely cover rap, although yesterday's episode featured the new Black Keys project.  I can't think of the last time they covered any new hip-hop related releases.  It's mostly in the rock/pop spectrum.

The blog portion isn't very comprehensive and I don't follow it much.  They're basically usually just regurgitating tidbits on the blog that you can find on any number of larger sites dedicated to the same subject (Stereogum, Pitchfork, Drowned in Sound, Tiny Mix Tapes, etc).

I was exposed to a wide variety of music at a young age, since my father was a guitarist in a blues rock band.

Then he became a booking agent, and eventually a manager, so I'd go on the road with him to gigs across the Eastern seaboard. I got to hang out with blues, soul, hip hop and rock musicians.

When I became an older teenager, oddly enough, he exposed me less to the road life (I guess a kid couldn't get into too much trouble).

After he got one of his acts to the Grammys, and the political nonsense that came with it, he'd left the industry for good.
