Should I walk out or give my two weeks?
« on: April 24, 2009, 10:14:06 AM »
I've kind of been abused like a donkey the past month and was planning on turning in my notice today.

However, my LONE keyholder is acting like he's going to quit, which would mean in addition to 30+ hour work schedule I was likely going to have to maintain on weekends - I'm going to be working open to close on weekdays too.

My supportive DM sent me this message minutes ago:

"done scanning yet i want to be golfing on a day like this"

Uh. Not sure if the reference is worth this.

It's time to keep it real.

Print a scan of your balls, like 30 copies, send one to demi, one to Malek, and the remaining 28 just throw it allover the store, then kick a stand down, then exit "oof oof motherfuckers"

Keep it real.

You should quit, but you should move here and become a part of Kentucky Bore.

Plus me and jaybo need a decent chance to kill you and take over your kingdom at the forum.

Two weeks, steal little things from the store, slack off, look for other jobs, move to Kentucky, become my personal sex man-servant (pro bono), eat some chicken strips, etc etc.

You should quit, but you should move here and become a part of Kentucky Bore.

Plus me and jaybo need a decent chance to kill you and take over your kingdom at the forum.

And this.

But no srsly.  Two weeks is always a good idea, so when you need a thousandth reference, you can say "Well, these guys worked me harder than anyone ever has.  If they give you a good vouch, you know I've gotta be good."

You guys want me to work 12 - 14 hour days with no days off and a two hour round trip commute per day for two weeks?

He wants me to work 9am - 1am today, 9am - 1am tomorrow and 9am - 12am on Sunday.

What the fuck.

Fine.  Just call in your DM, tell him it's an emergency.  When he gets there, throw the keys on the counter, kick over a magazine rack, and storm out.  Make sure you have a friend in the back of the store with a small video camera to capture this gold on.

I've had people call my references, but my references were never my direct managers. Coworkers, acquaintances, friends of a like mind and skillset. Never somebody who would be involved in an official performance evaluation.

If you don't care about ever wanted to work there again, or just don't like them, just walk away.

I walked away from a contractor position once and I was officially put on some sort of blacklist by the contractor and the company that I was working at... lol.

At first I was like, "huh, what?" because the thing I signed said I could terminate at any time without warning (first real job I'd ever had).  But after 2 minutes I realized I didn't give a shit because I walked away for a better job.

Leave, son.

Even in a shitty economic climate, you're getting used and abused.  What is worse is even if things get better, economically, your boss (and their bosses) know that they have a footstool in you because if you worked 12-14 hour shifts for a few weeks, you can do it for a few weeks more, etc.  So they'll cut back on hiring you additional help because of your hard (read: foolish) work ethic.

Sadly, that's retail.  Some places are better than others, but overworking salaried employees in retail so common it's not even funny.

Not sure if Wilco is salaried or not, but most managers in retail are, which kinda sucks in the end since you may not qualify for overtime in some cases.

I support your decision willco, whatever it may be... i mean how can i not? they are both so deliciously depressing. on one hand you can stay at the job and be fucked in the ass by corporate and probably eventually go postal and kill either someone else or yourself or both. on the other hand you can quit right now and be a dirty poor bitch and live in the streets of DC while washing your asshole with peoples garden hoses... god i cant decide but i will tell you this.. im masturbating right fucking now..

Now is the time to demand a raise or you are quitting. You have them over a barrel.

That way, if you leave, you can tell your next employer that it was because you were not being fairly compensated.

What if they actually gave him a raise?  From what I understand, Willco does not appear too interested in keeping the job, even if there is a raise.  It makes demands of him thathe is simply not happy with, and from his complaints, I doubt money would heal all wounds.

The company you work for is a distant second in an industry that will probably be dead within a decade.  It only makes sense that they would try and squeeze more and more out of salaried employees as their relevance dwindled.  Why were you so optimistic about this job in the first place?  Not to say "Oh you suck you should have seen this coming", but I never quite understood why you thought it would work out well.
