So, I've been dicking around with Project64 and the ability to load high-resolution texture packs for games. There's a guy out there who has pretty much single-handedly retextured Ocarina of Time in cel-shaded style, and the results are stunning:

And now some comparison shots!

It's like playing a completely different game. Wow.

There are also high-resolution packs out as well, which don't change the art style of the game so drastically. I've been using a high-resolution pack for Majora's Mask, and the subtlety of new clean textures as opposed to blurry-as-hell 1996 technology is fantastic.

Does anyone think 3d Zelda holds up? I really hate z-targeting.  That guy needs to finish the 2d OoT remake.

Yeah, that Wind Waker mod is fairly old. Been checking it out for a few months now.

I personally prefer the high res OoT mod, though the color scheme for some areas is questionable.

I was looking at this stuff the other day. Looks really cool. Is it possible to hook an N64 controller to a PC to use it? Here's a forum full of the stuff:

http://www.emutalk.net/forumdisplay.php?f=110

This one I think is really cool looking:

Although it looks all washed out and weird in a lot of areas.

This one also looks extremely cool, although I'm unsure how playable it would be during the game. It looks like a sketch book though:

I never get why there's not more remakes. If a silly PC mod can look so good, why couldn't a semi competent team be outsourced to make a higher res version with new textures of older N64 games.

Ah, but Hollywood, those are pixel shaders and not texture replacements. They're using the game's original textures and then applying a pixel shader on top of the D3D output to change the way the video looks.

adding highres textures to disgusting N64 3D is like garnishing cat food with a twig of parsley. the ones in the op are not quite the war-crime level terribleness that seems to be par for the course among these emu doods, but the hyrule field one seems to make it look worse.

Screw the texture packs. I love having a decent frame rate. It makes the Midway arcade racing ports infinitely better. California Speed is actually playable now. I think it was getting maybe 15-20 FPS on the N64 but now it's a solid 60.

Every damned Zelda seems like a remake to me.

Does this emulator support memory cards? I'm kinda annoyed that the N64 Virtual Console games don't support that, it means some of my favorite games won't show up there unless Nintendo can fix it.  :'(

Emu programmers may win yet again...

Wow, will definitely have to check this out. I know that there have been texture packs for the old awesome wrestling games as well.

Can I get San Francisco Rush running at 60fps?

It's pretty much impossible to improve the framerates in the majority of N64 titles.  The only exceptions I know of are Goldeneye and Perfect Dark (which can be forced to run at higher framerates).  It's a shame the Midway Arcade Treasures 3 didn't actually update the games to run at higher framerates as we'll never have a perfect 60 fps Rush game.  :(  Even the Dreamcast 2049 would grind to a halt whenever particle effects appeared on screen.

That last shot on the hill looks awful compared to the original.  Most of the close ups look the exact same except with smoothing.  The only real difference I notice is the grass texture is changed.  When you said cell-shaded, I was expecting it to look like Wind Waker.  Now it looks like some Frankenstein game with a few cell-shaded-like textures and then normal looking stuff like the people.

What Emulator are you using? Project 64 can boost the frame rates to 60 fps. California Speed and Midway's Offroad game are actually playable and enjoyable now.

Why the fuck do Nfags like cel shaded Zelda so much? I like OOT as it was, not like Wind Wanker.

Ultrahle on a Voodoo 2 card was da bomb.  I still remember my cousins' jaws dropping in awe as I showed them Mario 64 and Zelda 64 running in 800x600 with no slowdown.

The Dreamcast had strict limitations with alpha'd textures, so anything with particles would almost certainly bonk its head against that particular wall. Midway's not known for the best QA or the tightest code, so it doesn't surprise me that they released it with that problem unaddressed.
