This is a bummer.  :( We were going to secretly make a Craigslist ad for my friend... should've done it when we had the chance!

I wish we'd just go ahead and legalize prostitution (along with marijuana)

or at least be more reasonable in our enforcement

unfortunately, our Judeo-Christian mores means it's witch hunts from now until the end of time

eBay owns 25%

it's not that I'm in favor of prostitution or marijuana (I can't say I've either partaken of either), it's just that both seem mostly harmless and would benefit from coming out in the open, being regulated/supported, rather than pretending we can get people to stop wanting to have sex with cute ladies or smoke an herb people that's been popular for the past 3000 years, give or take.

Canada has odd laws regarding prostitution. Prostitution is not itself illegal, but everything surrounding it--like solicitation, for example--is.

Whiteman, you just made my day!

After reading this, I hopped on Craigslist for a chuckle. Browsing through the local M4W ads, I came across an ad for one of my friends.

I just printed out 10 copies of that motherfucker.

I have to imagine it's because when prostitution is legal, it's actually the whore that makes money off her vagina.

Can't have that.

Quote
Those that have said that the act of prostitution is legal, as defined currently in the criminal code are correct. It's in a grey area at the moment. You CAN prostitute yourself. You can accept "tributes or donations" for providing a sex act in a private dwelling.
You CAN'T openly solicit or negotiate a price in public. You CAN'T pimp (live off the avails of prostitution) and you CAN'T operate or be found in a bawdy house.
As far as Montreal is concerned. Rue St Catherines used to be the main strip, for just about everything. The municipal government has been attempting to clean it up since about 2001 so there's been quite a crack down. Strip clubs and peep shows still abound, where there is still a bit of prostitution going on as there is at the ends of St Catherine and off side streets.
I'm not condoning any of this activity nor am I saying it's evil, but none the less, it's a fact of life and up to the individuals involved. To be tolerant is the first step in being a Canuck. :)
It makes me sorta smile, to see the right wing religious groups that tout "family values" nail anyone that actually has fact. Obviously that's happened in the rates in this question. Grow up. Get a life and stop worrying about judgement until your god (spelled lower case on purpose) gets hold of your behind and spanks you.

Right . . . that doesn't contradict me. You can't run brothels in Canada, unlike Nevada. so it's not the same as vegas.

Sounds like this is just a paying lip service to the whiners anyway.  "Oh, now we'll have a section called "Adult Services" and it's going to be screened!"  As if someone is just going to post an ad that reads "Want to murder whores" and they might have missed it under the old program.  It seems like they want to find some perfunctory way to provide the same service while appeasing state police.....doubt it'll happen.

I had no idea this section of Craigslist even existed to start with.  I checked the section for my town and it seems like a lot of older women and fat black chicks (plus some obviously fake photos).  Some chubby 38 year old wanted $300 for a handjob :lol

The nominal fee they charge will prevent all kinds of stupid spam and phishing and website-pimping.  No more daily-listings from the same person over and over again, no more ads for escort sites or cam sites or whatever.  I don't think they're trying to "clean it up" so much as make it a much more user-friendly experience :lol  Law enforcement seems to think this is a victory, but it's only going to make it more convenient for people to find actual whores.

I looked at the "Adult Services" listing and the only problem is that it isn't categorized.  So you can look at an ad and not be sure if it's "Woman 4 Man" or "Transexual 4 Man" :lol

They really ought to start charging for all their "For Sale" and "Employment" listings as well IMO.  It's so annoying to reply to an ad for a promising job or good deal and just get some bullshit automated reply referring you to some shady online store or online job search site.  I guess they think the spam reporting system will take care of it but so much stuff slips through the cracks, and for jobs especially shitty businesses will just spam the shit out of it with lame commission-based marketing crap that's a waste of your time.

Actually you always had to pay to get erotic ads posted. I used to email many chicks there, just to see who was real and who wasn't. I might post some logs but for the most part the erotic ads are real. The casual ads are predominantly fake, at least in terms of women and transsexuals. Dunno about the dude side of things but I'd imagine they're real

Are you really sure?  I look at a page and I see the same postings by the same people every single day of the week....are they really coughing up $5 for everyone of those?  Maybe it's a real escort, but I'd still consider repeating postings to be spam that ruins site usability (since it pushes everyone else's listing down to the bottom of the page, and encourages them to spam as well).

It doesn't explicitly say it, but the gist I got from the article was that fees were instituted last November, but it was mainly just for the purpose of identity verification.  Which meant you paid a one-time fee, provided a phone number and credit card, and could then spam to your heart's content.

It sounds like the new system has you paying for every single listing and every single re-listing, because they need to pay a team of people to screen these ads.  How would you like that job?   :lol  Sitting around all day, looking at tits and ass and cheeseburger cocks....and somehow getting paid for it.

OLD: Under pressure from 40 U.S. attorneys general, the site agreed in November to charge people posting erotic ads $5-$10 by credit card and require them to submit a working phone number to use the site.

NEW(?):  Postings to the new section, which opened immediately, cost $10. Once they are approved, they will be eligible for reposting at $5.

Interesting. I used to post on an escort forum full of chicks who had left CL due to the police and fees. This was ages ago and they had to pay fees to use the erotic page. Any erotic listings on the casual page were deleted immediately. I dunno if it was a monthly fee or something that was required for every post.

I haven't been to CL in awhile, but there wasn't much spam on the Ann Arbor page. Basically a chick would post her ad every day or every other day. The police also post ads to attempt to catch people; best way to find out which ads were spam or police related was to search site based on the CL email provided. If multiple listings came up that person was definitely fake - spam or cops

Yeah, but it's Ann Arbor.  Who is going to spam such a small audience?  Just glancing down the listings of a large city I see the same ads placed several times in a row or at least daily....I see people asking respondents to go to some outside website.....I see people offering CAM shows.....I see ads for an Asian Massage parlor.  I also tend to presume anything with a hazy (or "too professional") picture and no listed phone number is also probably spam, but have no experience to back that up.

Also, this site reminds me of being on the internet in 1998.  Corny ASCII icons, colored text, hazy pictures and corny gangsta slang ("HOLLA BIG BOOTY LATINA 4 U").

I was under the impression that they were getting sued by many cities and states about the Adult Service ads. It seemt hat is the reason they would do this more then anything.

Prostitution in Las Vegas is illegal period. The law in nevada has statutes that state the county has a population limit for it to be legal. I believe it is around 300K, if you county has more then that living in it prostitution is illegal. Most of the brothels are in remote counties that are very small.

The "screened" ads don't look any different that the previous "Escort Services" ones.  I'm not sure why people thought Craigslist was doing anything to make substantial change.  I have no idea how this is going to prevent murder (much less prevent prostitution):

The "Erotic Services" section dies in 7 days.  The "Adult Services" section is already open.  The ad I posted was from it.

Postings to the new section, which opened immediately, cost $10. Once they are approved, they will be eligible for reposting at $5.

Do you rate the quality/size of a city by the number of transexual escorts available?
