Favorite albums of 2006
« on: December 08, 2006, 01:01:52 PM »
What albums did you pay attention to this year, and actually like? LIST TIME. Mine are in no paticular order, and from various genres

Flaming Lips - At War With the Mistics

This album really speaks to me. For some reason many of the songs fill me with this nostalgic bliss that I can't explain. I started listening to it again recently for the first time since I moved out the house, so maybe that's why: it reminds me of home, and summer.

Tool - 10,000 Days

I've had a love/hate relationship with this album since I first heard. When it's good, it's literally mind blowing. When it's bad, it's extremely boring; the filler "songs" (an entire track composed of wind blowing? wtf) and the extremely overrated Rosetta Stoned keep the album from being classic. Personally I feel this is the best hard rock album of the year, and Vicarius and The Pot are the best rock songs of the year.

Audioslave - Revelations

Revalations is a return to form for the band after it's mediocre sophmore album. The mix of hard rock and funk are really refreshing. Despite having a weak ballad, the album delivers.

OutKast - IdleWild

For some reason this album was not accepted by the public. Yeah it's a soundtrack album, but it deserved far more attention. Unlike most of the rap of 2006, this is 100% pure experimentation. PJ & Rooster should have been the song of 2006 instead of Crazy (Gnarles Barkley); it's much better and even more infectious than Hey Ya.

Lupe Fiasco - Food and Liquor

What's this: a rapper who gives shout outs to Lupin the Third, "likes Final Fantay, hates first person shootahs", AND wears glasses? BURN HIM. Sadly, that was the reaction many rap fans had to this album and it criminally went under the radar, despite the fact that it features two of the best rap singles of the year. But it looks like Lupe got the last laugh considering he's nominated for a grammy for best rap album of the year with this.

The Beatles - Love

This album is beautiful. Not only does it include many Beatles songs mash ups that mesh perfectly, everything is remastered. This gives the songs a very clean, new sound. Hearing Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds in all its brilliance or I Want You and Helter Skelter mixed together is just pure bliss.

Haven't heard the new Beck or Thom Yorke though, so it could change.

I need to hear Lupe Fiasco too.

Lupe's album was pretty good.  Nas will probably round out my year end Top 10, but overall a pretty shitty year for hip hop.  I mean you had Lupe, J Dilla, Nas and uh.... yeah.

I thought the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album was okay. Neko Case was pretty decent.

Nothing really grabbed me that came out this year, although I'd say the new Muse was pretty good. Gnarl's Barkley was disappointing, although it had lots of potential. I ended up only like 2 or 3 songs on that album.

But yeah, shitty year for hip hop.

Any word on the new Hi-Tek album? I like his beats and stuff but I haven't really paid attention to that album. Fell off my radar.

Fuck the haters :(

I didnt like the latest Muse album. It was even deeper into Absolution style opera rock, and less Origin Of Symmetry, which is IMO the best CD. The latest Barenaked Ladies CD is crap, and honestly pretty upsetting. This is probably their first cd out of the MANY that I just flat out wont listen to. Maroon is still their best piece.

Also I think Thom Yorke's music is boring. L o L. BRING ON THE KILLERS HATERS! ILL TAKE U ALL ON :(

I actually couldn't stand The Hold Steady until I saw them on the Jimmy Kimmel show - then they finally clicked and I think Craig Finn is a nerd-rawk GOD. And that guy writes lyrics like he was an emcee, damn he's a great writer.

I dunno about the new Autolux but man I have been listening to them A LOT recently. Too bad Future Perfect didn't come out in 2006 - it would've definitely made the cut!

"She Put 900 dollars
On the 5th horse in the sixth race
I think its name was Chips Ahoy
Came in six lengths ahead
We spent the whole next week getting high
At first I thought that she hit
On some tip that she got from some other boy
We were overjoyed

I got a girl
And she don’t have to work
She can tell which horse
is gonna finish in first
Some nights the pain killers
Make the pain even worse
Came in six lengths ahead
We spent the whole next week getting high
I love this girl but I can’t tell
When she’s having a good time"

...that shit puts chills down my spine  :-[

Beck is great as always. Only 2 good tracks on Tool's new album. Flaming Lips made a steaming pile of shit this year. I'll take Yoshimi over this shit anyday.

Hmm.  Let's see here.

Well, I liked a few albums this year, but my most recent discovery is one of the coolest.

The Oohlas.  "Best Stop Pop".

If you like the Pixies at all, you need this album.  Fantastic.
