It's soooooooooooo better than Contra 4. But its not even remotely widescreen. You use the remote to flick to swap weapons.

I'm gonna buy it when it gets released in America.  It looks awesome.  No distinguished mentally-challenged fellow dual screen bullshit makes it better than Contra 4 already.

Gameplay looks fucking AMAZING, it's a shame that the colors seem to be a bit washed out and lacking the detail found in Alien Wars.

I didn't get allowance.

SUX 2 B U

I got like a few dollars a week when I was a kid, that was it.  Back then, getting a new game was like a huge event.  Usually my brother and I would pool our money together.  Anyway, I got a job when I was 15 and from that point on could buy my own shit.  I even used to work my ass off to be able to buy Neo-Geo carts.  You wanna talk about being broke?   :lol

I didn't get an allowance.  It was a game or something every once in a while or loose cash for doing random chores (raking leaves, etc).  Good deal thinking back.

I remember having to beg my mom to buy me Wave Race 64 for $70 at the time.  The only reason I was able to was because years earlier my brother bought Captain Skyhawk for the same price.

Now I can drop $100+ a week like it's nothing.  :-[

Funny story, my mom didn't give any of us kids an allowance growing up. Didn't bother me, but as soon as I was out of the picture she started giving an allowance to my younger siblings.  My brother told me this like it was some dark secret.

Back then I never really thought if something was a turd or not and fucking loved everything!  It's great when the AVGN reviews something I played as a kid and didn't realize was total crap!   :lol

I don't think I really started thinking stuff truly "sucked" until the 32-bit era, although I didn't get suckered into the FMV genre and knew that was shit right from the start.  Looking back, we had a lot of shitty NES and Gameboy games, but a pretty damn good SNES collection.  We didn't get a Nintendo until 1990 in my house, but we had an Apple IIgs, and having gone backed and played a lot of stuff, I was surprised at how many Apple II and GS games were still fun enough and not so shitty.

I realized some games were crap when I was hooked up on Baseball Stars and I got to rent Home Alone, which I surprisingly didn't enjoy... booted up Home Alone once to then keep playing Baseball Stars for hours on end

I understand why all the kids who don't make any money play with ROMs now

there was always some way to play games even if you are a 9 year old with no money. shareware on the old 486. Scrounging change to rent Master System cartridges... it was worth it  :D now I buy a game or two every week as a salaried adult

But since emceegrammar likes the wii so much he probably wasnt into games as a kid anyway

I was actually fairly picky as a kid... well, not super picky obviously but I could spot a bad game a mile away. Used to rent a LOT, do a lot of trading with friends, and read Nintendo Power like the Bible, so I had a pretty good idea what I was stepping into. Like, when I played Total Recall I knew right away it was garbage.

First game I ever bought with my money? I believe it was Super Mario 3 with Communion money... probably the only good that religion has ever done me.  8)

Even back when I got one game a month (or every few months) I never really convinced myself that some games were good, even if I would play them a lot.  Mortal Kombat Mythologies Sub Zero was probably the worst that I put a lot of time into.  I'm not so different today with it.  I rarely think a game is bad and have high tolerance for anything I can find amusement in.  This year I think the only game I played that I hated was Dead Rising on the Wii.  Last year was Wii Music and the Lair demo.

Ah, I used to stay away from most movie or TV-based games.  I did have Bart Vs. The Space Mutants, which was impossibly hard.  Looking back, it's hard to believe I put as much time into it as I did (and I only got to like the third or fourth level)!

The one game that stands out from the rental store we used to frequent was an NES game I never played.  It's called "S.C.A.T."   :lol

The original Contra is still the only game in the series that I've played all the way through.  Which of the other Contras are still worth playing?

The original is still the best, IMO.  I'd try Contra III (I never really played it; missed out on SNES and couldn't go back to it later on), Contra Hard Corps (the Japanese version, not the U.S. version!), and Contra IV on DS.  Skip the rest.

Shattered Soldier sucked.  Turned Contra from a game of skill to a game of memorization.  Stand in these very specific spots at the right time or you die!  Oldskool Contra had patterns, but they weren't so strict on what you could do, it was more about skill and having quick reactions.

Yeah, Gradius felt like it was some lost game from the SNES era that was recently uncovered.  They did a really good job emulating that feel, while making a solid game.

Bought and finished this today. It ended up being better than I expected. Originally the bland artstyle made this look like a quickly thrown together effort, but the game exhibited more personality and craziness than I though it would. The first stage is typical run and shoot Contra, but after that they start throwing stage gimmicks that fits with Contra III/Hard Corps. In terms of difficulty, the NORMAL setting seems about the same as Contra III if not a bit easier. It may be worth checking out if you're a Contra fan, but if not then you could probably find better things to spend your $10 on.

Quick rundown:

+Inventive level design that's on par with the later entries
+Good remixes of classic themes (but barely any new material)
+Nonsensical story complete with nonsensical dialogue
+Unlockable characters
+Normal difficulty seems fair. Everything appears to be dodgable.
+HARD mode is sufficiently hard
-Artstyle comes off as a bit cheap (but there's some nice old school effects thrown in)
-Visually it's a bit on the soft side
-Only five stages plus final boss
-Final boss is pretty lame
-No new weapons (no C-missile, flame, or bombs either)
-No leaderboards!   >:(
mmm

there's something inside me that won't let me hate any late-era game that uses sprite rotation.  It gives me the warm and fuzzies.
