at least RB are making track packs that can be exported, are compatible across versions or are based on existing DLC. not that is much better

One more and they'll tie GH for retail releases this year.  Ah well, this particular horse (plastic instrument games) is heading for the graveyard anyway, might as well get the licks in while you can.

what about plastic skateboard games? :-*

So... aren't these mostly DLC tracks? Isn't this just another way of distributing their regular stuff to people who don't have an internet connection?

This just looks to me like RB opening up their game to a wider audience, and finding sales venues other than DLC. There probably is not a lot of crossover between the buyers of this Country Pack, when referenced against Classic Rock Pack or AC/DC Live. And in those latter cases (and probably all cases) the songs can be exported to the main games RB1 and RB2.

GH on the other hand is releasing Aerosmith, Metallica, Van Halen... those are standalone, not available as DLC, and not exportable to GH:WT, right?

The problem is that some of the songs in this pack are timed exclusive to the disc.  If you absolutely must play "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy", you have to spend $30 instead of getting it for $2 at the music store.  Bullshit like that is what I hate about these Rock Band expansion discs.  If all the content on the disc were available at the online store, it would be a nice way for dirty poors without internet access to expand their music library.

It's the semantics of it.  I don't give a shit about country music but Harmonix basically said you would be able to pick and choose any song you want and not be forced to buy songs in packages.  They broke that promise with AC/DC (but that has more to do with AC/DC being dicks with their licensing), are kinda doing it with the country pack and will probably do it with Pearl Jam.

Technically, they broke it when they released the first Rock Band and not an empty shell where you download the tracks you like.  Then they broke it again with RB2.  And AC/DC.  And the Pearl Jam 3-pack.  Etc.  Yeah, Harmonix are going back on their word, but they've already done that with RB before, so I'm thinking "who cares."

If anything, I'd be furious that they're releasing yet another shitty country 6-pack (their fourth one!).  The first one was pretty good on guitar, but everything else has been ridiculously terrible.

If you have to play "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" that badly, there are other, possibly unaddressable problems in play. :-*

I kind of know what you mean, though. I was stoked to have White Zombie DLC, but if that had been on a time-limited-exclusive disc for 30-90 days with a bunch of other nu-metal crap I don't want, I'd be chomping at the bit to drop my tiny, precious spaceboox on the DLC. But since I can't stand country music, this release just counts as one more release that's not for me, delaying the release of something else to buy.

The AC/DC one is kind of crappy, but it likely relates to something tricky in one of their contracts that had to be worked around.

Too bad I can't stomach music games anymore. Otherwise I'd be all over The Gambler.

Ack. Crap! I'll probably end up getting The Gambler at some point. I can deal with Kenny, Willy, and Merle. It's this new, mullets-and-girly-shirts country of the last 25 years I can't stand.

That's what I meant. But Harmonix is looking to find what will sell, and this modern country crap is apparently able to make money.

Amongst all the country crap, Harmonix gave us a Neko Case song. I'm happy.
