I need to learn that Liam Neeson judo neck chop move.  How does his hands move so fast?  He's like faster than Bourne!

It's pretty fucking awesome, he judo chops so many dudes in the larynx. :lol

I also appreciated it being one of the few films where the badass protagonist doesn't reign in his ass-kicking for audience sensititivy.  They pretty much unleash Liam Neeson in Paris and he carves out a swath of destruction that would make Jack Bauer blush.

yeah probably.  it's val kilmer trying to get the president's daughter back

to say anything more will ruin the many twists of plot.

his daughter was a brat.  She made him feel bad for getting a karaoke machine because the rich guy got her a horse or something.

I watched the topically related indie flick Trade starring Kevin Kline, and I was surprised at how many details of the sex trade industry the two films shared. So other than Liam Neeson being unrealistically awesome, the movie isn't entirely implausible. Also one of the kidnappers looks like Jinfash  :-*

Accordin' to the imdumb forums, the difference between the R-rated cut and the theatrical release is just two minutes and a matter of some additional moments of violence, sweet sweet violence.  For instance:

Quote
1. Near the end, when they try and strangle him and he escapes - he asks that guy for information in the elevator. In the PG-13 version, if I remember correctly, he shoots him in the leg, the guy gives him information, then he puts one in the head. Here, he repeatedly asks for information and keeps shooting the guy - knee, stomach, etc. until he gets the information, and then unloads on him. This isn't filled with blood and guts, but obviously they toned it down.

2. When he's running up to the boat and it takes off before he gets there. In the PG-13, he sneaks up on the guy by the car and just bangs his head against the the car and drives away. Here, he does that, then drops his head down and slams the door on it.

3. The fight at the very end with the guy running the boat is much longer and graphic. The whole boat scene feels a lot more intense overall.

Yeah, U2 sucks and it gets people abducted into sex trafficking.

I got the unrated cut.  It's not graphic, but it is pretty intense.  Good stuff.  So this was written by Luc Besson?  Maybe he should stick to Final Draft and away from cameras.

The ending was a pretty big letdown -- kinda stupid that there are no repercussions for this guy going to a foreign country, murdering its citizens, its police, and some royal Arab dude.  He just comes home on a plane and nobody gives a fuck.

I thought it would have been far cooler and far more poetic if he had gotten away but had to go underground to avoid authorities that would normally chase someone down for murdering diplomats and stuff like that.  So essentially we see the "cost" of such actions.  He gets his daughter back because he unleashed the fury, but can never see her specifically because he unleashed the fury.  She finally learns to appreciate her father and forgives him for never being there for her as a child, but consequently he can no longer be there for her as an adult.  It would have been like The Gift of the Magi -- except with a lot more throat punching.

Instead they go with the distinguished mentally-challenged happy ending where the bratty daughters' American Idol dreams come true.  Seriously?

Dude, he spends like two hours murdering people wholesale and doesn't even get arrested, and the happy ending is a deal breaker?

It's not like we were dealing with a serious movie to begin with!

Dealbreaker?  I just didn't like the ending (and part of the reason was obviously because 2 hours of murder go unanswered for).

I seriously think you missed the point of the movie.

There was a point?

What, you didn't get the Extended Edition where France is like "Hey, you can't just come over to our country and kill all our human traffickers and beat up all our corrupt cops and get away with it." and then Liam Neeson kills the entire country.

Did you complain that John McClane never had to answer for all the property damage he did?
All that can kinda be swept under the rug because all the people he killed he did in self-defense and he never really crossed any borders doing it.  So someone high-up enough just has to grant him amnesty or a pardon or whatever.  A foreign government would not be quite so kindly......particularly whatever government that Middle-Easten Shah-type dude was from.

I dunno, I guess I just associate Liam Neeson with more highbrow stuff and given that it's more-or-less a foreign movie anyhow, I was surprised that they went for something so saccharine when there was the opportunity for something more interesting and bittersweet.
