High definition bore: Thoughts on this tv?
« on: May 14, 2009, 06:10:25 PM »
I was browsing the hdtv section today at a store. I've been looking at a 32 inch samsung lcd for the past 2 years and right now it's my price range of around 500-650 dollars.

Thing is, there was this 37 inch Panasonic lcd right next to it and it shat on all the other tv's in terms of visual fidelity and colors. I asked the guy if it was the other tvs settings but he said that tv was actually that damn good.

It's 100 dollars more expensive than the Samsung but I think I may go for it.

I think this was it:

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-L37X1-37-Inch-720p/dp/B001U3YIQ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1242335300&sr=8-1

The tv I've been keeping note of:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN32A450-32-Inch-720p-HDTV/dp/B00141AYIC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1242335446&sr=8-2

Is it worth going 1080p?

In a small screen like that I wouldn't put 1080p as a priority, unless you want to use it as a computer monitor or are sitting incredibly close (say closer than 4 feet).

Samsung & Sony are generally agreed as the best in LCDs at the moment, Panasonic are the best among plasmas aside from Pioneer.  I'd read reviews first to get a general idea of the main flaws.  If you want to judge them in a showroom you really have to try to get them each set as close as possible.  TVs in showrooms are pretty much always set to horrible settings that you'd never use in your home.

Set sharpness to NIL, turn down the colours until they look natural (usually about 50% or less), turn down the backlight to a low setting to improve the blacks (although blacks are really hard to see in a showroom anyway), turn contrast down (maybe 60-80%), turn brightness down but not so much that you're losing shadow detail (usually about 50%).  Then you can get a better idea of how two TVs compare in a showroom.

Why not go right ahead with 1080p as it will be the standard in a few years? Perhaps you could find a 42 inches Westinghouse or Vizio set on the cheap somewhere like Wal-Mart

look at how cheap this is

yeah...don't listen to this guy.

A) 1080p won't be a standard of any sort in a few years, just more common.
B) Whether you notice 1080p is wholly dependant on how far you sit from the TV
C) Dude is suggesting a Sanyo :lol

go to avsforums and search around if you want good advice and the most for your money.

errr, 1080p will most definitely become a standard with the next generation of consoles, and current 720p console games upscaled to 1080p still look pretty good, plus with 1080p you get the benefit of enjoying Blu-Ray films to their fullest resolution

you're over the top with that second claim, sure 1080p shows more on bigger screens, but there definitely is a difference, I play 1080p versions of console games on my PC and my 40 inches 1080p Bravia and there's a LOT more depth on the picture even if you sit somewhat far from the screen... plus I reckon that Himumu probably lives in a relatively small apartment

as for the last point, Himumu is a poor student with little money, so he needs the best bang for his buck... currently in my opinion, 1080p sets from brands such as Westinghouse, Vizio, Sanyo and others are the best alternative as far as that is concerned, yes they use chinese panels but people are very satisfied with them, and they'll definitely provide a good picture once the set is properly calibrated

No! Go big or go home! I'm a college student and I was able to get a 42" panny plasma like 1.5 years ago. Just save up $1000-$1200 and get a good tv. There's no reason for him to rush and get any ol' tv right now.

the thing is, why wait forever? cheaper models, better technology is always going to come down the road

why not get something that is cheap, good and will last you some years so you can go ahead and enjoy HD now, and still have money left to spend on other things?

then when you have bigger means you can wait for another technology to hit its sweet spot

Hey guys, I just bought a little 19" 720p HDTV.  When I tried the PS3 on it, it accepted a 1080p signal.  Is it still better to play in 720p though, or is it not going to make a difference?

Play in 720p because you don't have the issue of downscaling.  Also some games run worse in 1080p so why get worse performance if it'll look identical.
