New PS3 model is in the works.
« on: May 16, 2009, 03:31:28 AM »
Has anyone been following the story at GAF? Supposedly, a Chinese manufacturer has leaked photos of the prototype.

Quote from: Wollan
For the new page, resized/rehosted:

Other:

Original 60GB PS3 Motherboard, 180watt versus current 80GB, 110watt (which has 65nm CPU/GPU):

(Image removed from quote.)

The standard workstations (as pointed out by Sin):

(Image removed from quote.)

Thanks to west and iceatcs for angling the image correctly, the system is almost quadratic:

(Image removed from quote.)

So:

1. Convincing, professional chassis mold
2. Logo changed from PLAYSTATION 3 to PS3
3. Packaging image is not shopped (though the pack itself might be custom made)
4. IBM have had the 45nm Cell in production (since mid 2008 I believe?), we all know the story about the general downsizing of PS3 components and lower power needs
5. Pink/green work stations! (same as background)
6. Sony shipped 10m PS3's in fiscal year 07 and 08 each, they are now saying 13m for 09.
7. Maintek Computer located in Suzhou, China, manufactures PS3s. They brought down the thread (Chinese) that was hosting these images with cease and desist.

All signs point to an early fall release. New models are supposed to do get rid of some of the unnecessary parts found in the older systems and be cheaper to manufacture.

Would make sense if they're doing a price-cut around the same time.

Uh, I assumed that was a total fake? It's not? Then go Sony, I'll buy one.

Yeah, it's not a fake. A couple of very credible posters on the forum practically confirmed it.

I hope it's a prototype, though. I am not digging the new design.

That thing is so ugly.  I guess if it is legit, it will have a power brick, since the system so slim, yet requires tons of power due its basic architecture.

Yeah, the power brick is going to be external this time.

At first I was pretty turned off by it. Still am, to an extent. It's got an odd shape.

But I'm really starting to dig that retro black matte finish. Combined with the weird rectangular flatness of it, reminds me of like a Turbo Grafx 16.

I still don't get why game consoles can't look like other devices you have around your TV.  PS3 is the worst because it's rounded and it's even hard to lay my PS3 controller on the top without it slipping.  Couldn't they just do a nice square shaped, maybe some round edges with flat top and bottom and a brushed metal look to it?

the only thing that I really do hate about this design is how it's smaller, but the blu-ray slot is still on the right with a little tumor popping out the side.  Either put that slot in the middle or make it an even design without a random bump.

Will reserve judgement for the final product (or at least, better pictures!), but that thing just looks UGLY.  Then again I don't think the regular PS3 and the 360 look that great either, or most game systems released, for that matter.  I like the Wii's design (sans stand), but that's really nothing more than an external DVD-ROM drive.   :P

I'd like to see a PS3 model that looks the same as the current model but cut in half...basically the right half of the system would be the whole thing.

I'm not sure if this is going to be true or not but I wouldn't be surprised if a "PS3 slim" happened eventually. Its one of the few options Sony has left to stop the neverending blackhole called the PS3

a mockup of putting the sections "together", stolen from gaf

it doesnt look that bad to me.

athough i dont like that the possible HDD slot is under the blu-ray drive, but with the really slim BR drive shown in this thread and a possible extra layer of material may help.

And the text position looks really funky.

Good work on slim PS3, it's gonna sell loads in Japan probably- and re-introduce the PS3 in other markets, if the marketing is done properly. FIRE EVERYONE AT SCEE MARKETING, NOW.

that actually looks really nice put together

I wouldn't mind a matte finish and I don't think a shiny one would be better or worse.  Brushed metal would look the best.

the font is pretty lame but they would need to make it something different from what the current font is if they wanted to reinvent the thing.  Round and compact is certainly different from the spider-man font.

What's with the round fetish this gen between the PS3 and X360?  Even the Wii is kind of roundish at that front corner.

PS2 was the ultimate hotness.  Sharp edges are not the sharp kness of the console generation.

Yeah Sony, that's the problem with the PS3, the physical size of the unit.

 :-\

It certainly wouldn't hurt it to be smaller.  Especially in Japan where size perception is an issue.

Plus re-releasing systems always helps sales.  See DSlite & PSP2000.

Well, before we say it wouldn't hurt it to be smaller, let's wait and see how the defect rate is on it.  But yes, a cosmetic re-design certainly does temporarily jumpstart sales, so I suppose this could potentially bring the PS3 out of Gamecube zone and into the wild successes of Xbox 1 land.

Also, I don't buy that size is really an issue here.  Everybody and their mother (literally) has Wii Fit, and the freaking balance board is not small in any way.  The real issue is the price and the loserstink, and Sony is pretty much helpless to change the former, so the latter won't be going anywhere.

One thing I did hear mentioned that might make sense is that this new model could be cheaper to produce, which means less of a loss for sony, or even some profit.  Considering how many features they took out of the PS3 since launch, it kind of makes sense.  The original design had the memory card adapter, 4 usb ports, all the PS2 stuff, etc.  I remember one person saying that the door to the left of the blu-ray slot is still there even without the memory card adapter.

yeah, we shall see if this thing is even real or not at E3 I guess.

You couldn't even play with these locked saves if you moved your PSN profile over to another system?  I'm sure SF4 is one of those locked saves, and I sure as hell don't feel like starting that over.   :lol

Nope. It won't even let you copy the saves. And I don't believe the full backup function works across different PS3s.

SF4 and RE5 are both locked this way. A friend got his PS3 yellow lighted and lost like 40 hours of RE5 progress.

Won't matter unless it's significantly cheaper and it magically coincides with the release of like 20+ games people want to play.

Actually, it won't matter.  Nintendo has turned gaming into the slow class this gen.
