Volunteer for campaigns and candidates, get an internship with your local congressperson, join civic organizations and be active in them, read profiles of local movers and shakers in the newspaper.

Where do you find out about local campaigns and stuff so you can volunteer?  I'm guessing this only works if you back the right person and they actually win, right?  Also what's a "mover and shaker"???

Your local paper is the best bet.  Movers and Shakers--most local papers publish profile pieces usually featuring leaders within your community or area.  They usually feature prominent educators, lawyers, entrepreneurs, politicians, and business people.

Start small.

A great book that covers networking is Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazi.  It has tons of great advice.

Your local party organizations are a good asset to use.  If you can be of value to them, you will make contacts.  I probably could have had a job with the New Hanover Co. Democratic Party if I wanted it, but it would have paid peanuts and I would have had to deal with people which always sucks.

Also, politicians will have offices that you can get in touch with.

OnkelC seems to know a lot of politicians, maybe PM him on GAF- though that's in Germany and I think his job involves them.
