It's awesome that the ground game is complex, it means you can own people if you take the time to learn it.

I'll pick it up tomorrow after work. They had a promotion at EB that allows you to return the game after a week and get the full price back as credit. So if worse comes to worse I'll bring it back and turn it into Modern Warfare 2.

I have it in the mail, looking forward to it. I liked the UFC game on Dreamcast a lot. I'm just concerned i'll probably burn it out quickly, since the single player looks fairly repetitive.

Yes.

Well, building up the character through the career mode is awesome, getting higher in the rankings then losing fights against those stars you know but you didn't prepare to fight, and then come back prepared is awesome.

First challenged for the title against Thiago Silva, and the game did a beautiful job of making me fear him with the intro, his attitude and then when he submitted he had this gesture to the camera, good god i felt so overpowered lol

I watch UFC, avid fan, I have the game coming in should get it in a couple days. How good is create a fighter? Is there a gi in it so I can create a decent Royce Gracie fighter?

I think you can do quite a bit with a faces, at least it has all those sliders i guess.

I'm still thinking about picking this up. I played it at a friend's house last night for like 3 hours doing exhibition matches against him and his roommate. It really does kill your thumbs when you're wiggling around the analog sticks and tapping buttons on the ground.

If this game had custom soundtracks on PS3 it'd get a 10/10 out of me. But since I have to listen to shitty numetal and bannana rock, it makes it a 6/10.

My copy arrived yesterday. I've, uh, played the demo extensively so was feeling pretty confident in my skillz, but my first online match ended in a 3rd round KO... and I was on the wrong end of it. Still, it was three rounds of some pretty serious action, my heart was booming bigtime -- I didn't want to lose my first online match!

So far I've only had one Career match go past the first round, but I am guessing this doesn't mean you're winning in the first round?

I did get him to the ground, but any time I major-transitioned a couple steps, I kept getting minor-transitioned /back/ a step immediately afterward. I re-did the tutorial and noticed that minor-transitions are easier to reverse than major ones, so I'll have to practice that. The guy was good, though. Well, I think I'm pretty good, and he was better than I am. :-)

I finally got it in the mail on Tuesday, been playing a bit of it. Really good gameplay, really deep, and its taking a while to learn everything about it so its good when you're playing. It's too bad everything outside that just seems to drag on.

The menus really are crap. I didn't believe it was a big bother reading the reviews, but going through it and playing career mode, wow. Everything is so needlessly long winded with the menus. Reading email in career mode, putting sponsors on your shorts, everything takes like 10 screens to go through. Then when you want to start playing, it loads and you're waiting, then have to skip as much of the introductions as possible as well. Really dumb, something so simple could be so annoying.

Right now in fights I'm trying to figure everything out. I'm not used to the transitions yet and how to move from one to another. I know how, but I don't know exactly which one goes to which, or how to get out of a situation when you're on the offensive in the guard and someone is holding your head towards them. I guess punching is the only way I can think of, or moving the right stick back, neither seem to work well. Also its really difficult to time strike reversals and block right now.

As for career mode itself and sparring, I think I have down how to gain maximum points in it. I can get about 25 each time or so by throwing punches, and more if I knock the guy down or can get a takedown. I'm doing HORRIBLE in camps though. I have been through 3 and haven't been able to move up a level in that discipline. For one, once you start it, and you see a definition up on the thing, some of them don't tell you how to execute it, so I have no idea what it is to do it.

And secondly, I can't ever seen to pull off a complicated combo. Such as: [STRIKING] Y, X, LT + Y. I'll do it EXACTLY like the instructions, yet it won't count it. I'm not sure why, its really stupid. I think the STRIKING command refers to hitting the button over and over from striking distance, and then at the right moment move to the next button then the next, all while you're in that 'range' away from the opponent. I had a hard time even doing that stuff in tutorial mode since it wasn't explained at all, and what I just said was the only way I could get it to work. But in camp mode its stupidly difficult to do it to a guy who's moving towards you and punching at you. It wouldn't be a big deal if it was simply the three button press, I did that over and over again, but they had to make things needlessly complicated.

Maybe I'll get the hang of how to do all this, at least the gameplay I know I'll get better at. I don't know if this career mode problems will get any better.

for sparring, make sure you go in has high a stamina as possible as there's a modifier for stamina.

also for the striking, you just press the buttons in order, don't wait for the strike to be thrown

Yeah I got that part of sparring, that isn't really a problem.

Also what you said, is that what the STRIKING command means in that combo?

I think so.

So if you wanted to do a right jab then a low left kick, you'd hit Y then LT+A (or whatever the buttons are). Don't hit Y then wait for the strike to be thrown before putting the next command in. You're basically chaning them together.

I don't know if that sounds distinguished mentally-challenged or not. I hope not.

No, I get what you're saying. Its probably why I could only get the combo to work when I was mashing the first button quick in the tutorial, that I was then hitting all three fast and not noticing thats what did it.

I can never ever get a single combo to work in training camps. Fucking sucks.

I also hate how the opponents in training camps fight back. That's such bullshit. If i'm supposed to be training on my ground game, let me fucking put him in the position I need.

And yeah, the menu's are terrible. So god damn terrible.

I played about 20 online matches over the weekend, and won about half of them. The lag can be pretty horrible. A lot of "Hey, I was supposed to be blocking...!" But maybe that's just coming from being used to playing local MP or against COM. I have NO ability to deal with lag.

After reading about how many disconnecting bastards are out there, I finally ran into one. I submitted him, and the game saved, went to the official announcement cutscene... and "The connection was dropped, so this match will be invalid." I sent the guy a "quitter" note and marked him with negative feedback. He wrote me back to check his DNF count on the leaderboards and my own record, saying he hadn't quit. Sure enough, the win was recorded. WTF? I wrote him back and apologized for jumping the gun, and reversed my previous feedback.

He wrote back saying NP, thanks for not being a dick about it, and hoped for a rematch. I'm really happy to have been wrong about the DNF, but even more happy that there are some cool players out there.

Good shit on the Fedor CAF. I already got one on the UFC-CAF.com site, but its not near as good as that. I'll have to remake him. I haven't tried yet, but is there any way to edit a fighter once they're in career mode, besides hair, tattoos, and trunks?

June 1, 2009 - Today at the EA press conference Peter Moore announced EA Sports MMA. The game will be coming in 2010 and is currently be developed by EA Tiburon in Orlando.

"With Fight Night Round 4 set to deliver a knockout with industry-leading visuals and genre-defining gameplay later this month, I couldn't be more excited to announce the expansion of our combat sports strategy with EA SPORTS MMA coming in 2010," said EA SPORTS President Peter Moore.

Moore continued, "Fans have been begging EA SPORTS to get into the cage, and EA SPORTS MMA will put them in control of the sport's unique combat experience while finally, in an immersive interactive experience, capturing the raw intensity that has made mixed martial arts one of the fastest growing sports in the world. We're ready for the fight."

This announcement is timely considering it brings a competitor to the table with THQ's recently released UFC Undisputed. We'll have more info for you from the show as news breaks.

Well some out there are Fedor, Couture possibly, classic fighters probably in like Abbott, Gracie, Shamrocks. Throw in some Strikeforce. Gina  :-*. I would buy it just for the possible Fedor vs. Kimbo dream squash if he was in it.   :D

It would probably be based on former UFC fighters/legends, and current other organizations, and creating your own fighter. I think they could compile a good roster of 40 or so fighters with that model.

It will probably suck. I won't bother buying it unless they somehow get some DREAM/Sengoku stars contracted. I can't think of very many prominent fighters from North American MMA/Strikeforce/Affliction that I would be interested in -- at least not at the price of $60.

Good news, although I haven't been playing due to playing FNR4 lately:

Writing on the game's community forum, producer Neven Dravinski outlined the patch details:

    1. We recognize premature match quitting as the biggest online issue and have taken steps to fix it. The Patch will have integrated code that detects who pulls the cable and will assign a Loss as well as a Did Not Finish to that player. The DNF is only counted for the player who executes the disconnection. The DNF rate will be displayed on the fighter selection screen of the Online Ranked Match. When disconnected the Winning Streak is also reset to 0.
    2. We've adjusted Ranked Matches to match up players with better connections, which will improve lag issues we've seen to date.
    3. We've adjusted the difficulty of performing submissions against AI opponents to improve the balance of subs vs. striking when playing against the AI.
    4. We've adjusted the Flash KO rate so that they are less frequent.
    5. We've increased maximum number of points awarded in online play from 99,999 to 999,999 and we've increased the Max Level from 100 to 200.
    6. We've lowered the Winning Streak Bonus Max from 5 to 3.
    7. We've removed the decimal places on the Leaderboard Winning Percentage so we only show whole percentages.
    8. We've addressed the CAF cheat so the skill levels in CAF cannot be cheated and increased. Also any CAF with unfair point values will no longer be able to be used Online.
    9. For PS3 users we've also fixed a bug that causes a freeze during auto-save; whichever controller was used to Press Start on the Title Screen will be identified as the main controller.

Rest assured our entire team plays A LOT of online matches and we read the boards every day, so we are well aware of the issues. We want to make sure we patch this correctly so it is taking a bit of time, but I can confidently say we'll be releasing this patch soon.

:D Damn they really did put a LOT of work on the patch. Too bad there's nothing on the menu load times and such, menus are a major annoyance in it.

Competition for the UFC game is looking good:
