Finished up Gothic 4 and started on Risen. Gothic 4 was one fine looking game, but all those pretty locales don't hide how shallow and broken that game ended up being. Despite playing on Hard, pretty much 98% of the battles can be won just by simply stunning an enemy with lightning and slashing away at it. Nearly all the quests were the typical fetch quest fair, but I did like how the main character seemed to get increasingly aggravated by having to constantly run errands. The ending was a very brief CG cutscene that was nothing more than an advertisement for the expansion pack that was supposed to come out (which I read was put on indefinite hold due to legal reasons). I still had some mild fun with it, but mainly for the scenery and the main character's bickering.
Risen so far is looking much, much better. It seems to be a nice contrast to Gothic 4 as they both share a lot of things in common, but does those things in such a way that it doesn't feel so completely dumbed down. I'm liking the vibe of the world too. It has a bit of an old fashion adventure game feel to it. Very much looking forward to putting more time with it.
