I bought Drive Club, Forza 2, and The Crew, for science but also because I hate myself.

The fucked up thing is that all three are good racing games.

The Crew you need some bros to play with though, because some of the missions seem too hard without allies.  Forza I've played the least, maybe two hours, probably because it's more of a known quantity, whereas Driveclub and The Crew were intriguing.

Seeing as I'm late to Driveclub's launch BS, I'm finding no trouble with the online aspects.  Same goes for The Crew, although The Crew uses Uplay  :pacspit

Also if it matters, The Crew is also the only game running in 60fps, pretty easily.  Yes the graphics aren't as nice as the other two games, but the scope is much bigger, so that and the superior framerate in some ways makes up the difference.

playing Dragon Quest IV on Android for the first time and I'm kicking myself for blowing it off for all these years. this some of the most fun I've ever had with an rpg. still can't believe a game this huge and polished came out for the nes. the scenarios especially are really great, but I guess I should have expected that given what series this is.

my phone is quickly becoming a dq collection machine and it's AWESOME. already went thru 1, next I'm gonna play 2&3 since I never finished either of them, and by that point 5 should be out. would love to get 8 also if it goes on sale.

yeah ios dq4 it's the same as ds dq4, with the addition of party talk. I use party talk all the time; the characters would feel hollow without it. they have new dialog for most npcs you talk to, so there's a LOT of extra dialog. really adds a lot to the game.

and dq7 not coming here is a fucking tragedy. I'd pay $40 for a smartphone version. I WANT THAT GAME DAMMIT.

Not playing anything because goddamned XBL is down. I spend 6 weeks away from my Xbox, finally get to my sister's place, download a bunch of the Games with Gold titles which were blocked from downloading in Japan, and then XBL goes down for the evening. Jesus.

GLAD I AM PAYING EXTRA FOR YOUR BULLETPROOF ONLINE INFRASTRUCTURE, MICROSOFT. GOOD JON.

I see on MS’ status page that “core services” are “limited” for Xbox 360. Does this mean everyone with a 360 is unable to log in? ‘Cos that’s what’s going on for me for the last 3 days. Mine just says, “Your console cannot connect to Xbox Live.” The status site claims everything is working, does that mean for Xbone?

So I picked up the free Mirror's Edge over the weekend.

While I love the platforming bits and it just feels great to run away from pursuers.  I'm not really a fan of the trial and error nature of it "Oh you ran left? Welp, sorry, you're most likely going to die now." That really annoys me. As well as the sewer/water drain/in door sections. It seems downright silly in a "Who the hell would have ever built anything like this?" kind of way. I'm used to videogame logic and give it large leeway in many games but in this game where you're supposed to feel you're being pursued through a huge structure or city to be like it can be jarring to see something so contrived. The only other thing is, it would be so much cooler if the city didn't seem so abandoned. I think as a first offering it's pretty good, they should follow it up, even if it might not be for me (jury's still out)

Trial and error gameplay is awesome. Life is about decisions, and you keep making the wrong ones. Maybe you're just a really, really, stupid person IRL.

Think on it

meh, I like the games where you have a chance of making the right decisions and if you fail it's because you're dumb instead of it being "Go left or go right?" and one of those = death. I'd even be ok if when you picked wrong it was harder, but still possible to get your way out of your mistake. I don't have the time for coin toss gameplay.

Mirrors Edge: I too managed to grab this (apparently at the literal 11th hour), and I’m looking forward to finally giving it a whirl. I’ve always liked the look of the game, and thought it was a bold concept. It sure has a cult following, so I’m hopeful.

I had a lot more fun with the PC version of Mirror's Edge. There is something about the controls and the narrow FOV that made me dislike it on consoles.

What did you think of DQ1, Pos?

didn't play it til the gba port, but i love the shit out of that game. still go through it every few years, and I've never got bored with it. it's small, but that makes it the Peugeot length for a quick but epic-feeling adventure. it does a great job with allowing you to explore while subtly guiding you (like the bridges, or hints from townspeople). also the way you constantly give yourself new goals (I wanna survive this cave, but I can't last very long in floor two. guess I better get some more cash for some new armor) makes it feel more involved and less grindy than it really is.

like a lot of the other dq games I've played, a big part of it's charm is how it seems very simple, but in fact is just very well designed in a way to show you how to effectively play it without explicitly telling you how.

tips for your first time thru mirrors edge:

turn on highlighted objects, so you can more easily see what you're supposed to interact with

hold triangle when you're lost. the camera will move to where you're supposed to go next. works fairly well, even while running around.

Also, as for the 'sewers':
https://www.google.de/search?q=tokyo+storm+drains&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=GE-GVK6AI8uuPOPlgfgJ&ved=0CCIQsAQ

Not to say that they didn't take some liberties to make more interesting/playable levels, but the architecture always seemed believable to me. I've got to re-play this sometime soon, kind of in a gaming slump at the moment.

There are three trial and error segments involving armed enemies that I hated: the mall, the parking garage and the last level. Figuring out the correct route/approach there was no fun at all.

Up to the final save point in Suikoden 4. Yeah, this game was pretty bad, small areas to wander in, a painful world map, frequent encounters with very little strategy beyond attack-attack-attack, and bland, colorless graphics. Gonna start up Tactics this Christmas break, there's a game I haven't heard much at all about... how is it?

Tactics improves upon everything in IV.

IV is shit. It has a boring one-dimensional setting and crap underdeveloped characters. Tactics helps unfold that setting and help develop those characters. The story gets fucking stupid but the gameplay and characters are still pretty fun. Honestly, I say skip it and play V instead unless you want IV's island nations further developed, a solid Fire Emblem clone or just kudo points that you've played every Suikoden. Ultimately Tactics, like IV, doesn't  have much of a place in Suikoden lore so it's really just there.

On the other hand, V is pretty much the best in the series in my opinion.

Just played through Super Mario Land for the first time since I got my Game Boy in '89. The level design is a bit more clever than I remember, the control is a bit strange - you drop like a rock, there's no bouncing off enemies, moving doesn't feel as tight as the console Marios. I played through and beat it on my first time through, world 3 being a bit tough with the falling rocks and the moving platforms everywhere. Not a bad game for the first portable side scroller, though definitely weaker than the other 2D entries. I like how the worlds are based on ancient empires, its unique to the series and I hope they revisit that since I'm sick of the same old grass/desert/ice/fire/water worlds.

And I started 6 Golden Coins, my first-ever time playing it. Graphics look great for the OGB. Control is a bit better but the scrolling feels a tad jerky. I've only played a few levels but so far the level design seems lacking compared to SML. Non-linearity and auto-save are pretty cool features and should hopefully make this a quick and seamless playthrough.

I "beat" DOOM 1 the first episode, last night on hurt me plenty. Think I fucked up the ending because I hit a switch went up the stairs and went on a teleporter and got transported to a dark room and got killed then I got a string of text.

I remember getting a different ending after killing one of those cyberdemon things but I don't remember which version of DOOM that was.

Not sure if it's worth it if you don't have nostalgia for it. It did some stuff that games before didn't have, tech wise (looking up and down, focus on mouse aiming) and the scenario and humour was fresh, but the gameplay doesn't have that 'pure' quality that something like DOOM has.

tbh I didn't even like it back in the day. outside the novelty of the humor and having levels that looked like real places instead of mazes, it was pretty boring. the gameplay didn't even come close to what id was putting out.

Played through the Saints Row 4 DLCs which reminded me that everything that's not gameplay is awesome in SR4 (cutscenes, writing, humor, music), everything that is, is a 7/10 shovelware action game.  Expect Gat out of Hell to be about the same.

Fun, fast-paced shooter with some only slightly offensive stealth sections thrown in. It has stupid boss fights against bullet sponge humans (and one easily cheesed helicopter), but they're not too difficult. Lots of varied, though very boxy locations.
It just crashed on me though and it doesn't autosave between chapters and I only saved when I stopped playing last time, which was several levels back.
Uninstalled, watching the rest on Youtube. edit: Looks like I was right near the end, anyway. Just as well.

Started Mirror's Edge after getting it for free on Sony's PlayStation birthday giveaway.

It's a pretty game. Kinda stunning how well the stylized environment holds up.

The Cinematics are another matter. I'm all for non-engine-driven cines, but these feel really cheap. Must've been the advent of Flash-driven cinematics? They just look goofy. I would have preferred that "motion comic" style.

I'm only on chapter 2, so my control abilities are meager.  I am avoiding fights and  holding the circle button to find out where I should be heading.

It's fun!

I probably will, but I’ll have to get PSN spacebucks from the USA, since the game is on my USA account. It’ll depend on if I get any good at the controls, but I love the pure gameplay idea; Metal Gear’s Virtual Missions were the only part of the game that I liked.

Mirror's Edge outsourced their flash cut-scenes for cost and time constraints if I remember correctly. Certainly not one of the game's high points, but the story as a whole is pretty garbage so it's no loss skipping it all.

n yea, the game is swell outside of that (and the few parts where not-gunning is a little too hard). Excellent game all in all.
