Correction, I've played Far Cry 3, not Far Cry 4.

FC2 has the best atmosphere. It's hyper-immersive, and it's bleak as shit. Tonally, it's the polar opposite of 3 and 4. Those games are pure power fantasy whereas in FC2 you feel like a weak little bitch in a scary dangerous place. Loved it.

Far Cry 4 is essentially the same in those respects, though I'm actually quite enjoying it. That said, it really is rather unsatisfying to level your skills and get better weapons/items because it's just so easy.

Its really satisfying to run into something new or to buy something new in Far Cry 2, more so than Far Cry 3. Still haven't played FC3, played Blood Dragon, thought it was alright.

Yeah, running into something new in Far Cry 4 is incredibly unexciting, there are so many locations that it really does feel more like checking off a list than actually finding a new place. It's a real shame too, a lot of the locations are very nicely designed, but they really should have realized that at a certain point, less is more. The same flood of locations (and associated collectibles) of course is also exactly what leads to having such an excess of resources. I don't remember money having ever been a limiting factor for me, and of course the animals are abundant and easy to get really early on (except for snow leopards and the quest-based animal loot, because snow leopards are probably only common in the north of the map which is locked early on and some of the hunting quests  can also only be accessed after you gain access to that part of the map)

Far Cry 4 works the best when you don't buy any of the maps and you don't care about collecting or checking off every single list item.  When you're just exploring on your own or doing missions and stumble across locations it's great and the collectibles are just nice bonuses to finding the locations.  Going out of the way to climb all the mountains takes you to some pretty cool places and vistas.  I learned my lesson after the starting area of buying the first area maps and then I didn't buy any maps again until I was at the final boss and done with my adventure and felt like seeing the places I missed.

Started playing Tales of Zestiria and damn, the game gives off a great impression from the start.  Didn't realize it was going to be a Xenoblade/FFXII-ish Tales game.  Huge scale open areas to explore, good cutscene stuff coming from Xillia's attempt at better storytelling, good battle system stemming from Graces' battles.  Even has good music.  Impressed so far.

Yeah, I guess maybe that's what I should've done. Fool that I am, I bought all the maps in the first half hour of free roaming play.

The emphasis on shooting is kind of a bummer in Wipeout 2048.

They should have taken out all the shooting instead of putting more work into it.

I beat Faxanadu after all these years... a while back I quit because I was a bit stuck in the area filled with tons of fog, on one of the towers. Turns out, the tower contains a pendant that is not needed to beat the game... a pendant that supposedly raises your strength, but due to a glitch in the game, actually lowers it :P So I got that, found out that I wasn't supposed to get it, so I just reset and skipped over the tower. Then the rest of the game went by pretty quickly, even the final boss I stumbled upon by accident and didn't have a full array of potions, but still kicked his ass. So yeah, a pretty good game with some frustrating enemy placement from time to time. And a few niggling interface issues... it takes forever to buy shit in the shop because the shopkeeper talks sooooo slooooow, and you need a key every time you want to open a locked door, which can require a bit of backtracking if you're not carrying around the right key.

Also was playing a lot of Bayonetta 2, up to the final chapter. Won't 100% the game since that's too hard, but yeah its a fun game... some of the bosses have a bit too much health, and battling them becomes a test of patience... and also I don't like how in many cutscenes, there is no animation whatsoever, its just static shots that pan around a bit.

Still making it through Theatrhythm: Curtain Call. Played all the songs through FF9 on medium mode. My goal is to beat all the songs in the game with at least an "S" or higher.

And finally, started Captain Toad. It's pretty fun, I love action-puzzler games so its nice to see a game in the genre with an actual retail release. Just finished the first chapter as of now.

Danganronpa and mostly enjoying it.  I kept hearing 999/VLR and Phoenix Wright brought up in comparison, but so far it's only conceptually like 999/VLR.  the, uh, gameplay is the same sort of obtuseness as phoenix wright.  everything is so rigid it's a wonder they include choices at all.  I mean outside of the free time social links stuff, which so far hasn't had a purpose besides filling in character backstory.

I needed a new PS3 controller and the cheapest option was with the God of War bundle so I bought that. I remember playing God of War 1 and 2 and having no strong feelings either way, so I gave 3 a try. What a shallow, repetitive and boring-ass game. It feels the same as the first 2, but I don't know, maybe my tastes have matured. I played it about an hour before I got sick of the mashing, quick time events and weightless combat.

At least I got a cute red controller out of it.

I wish they would make another Zelda game on the DMC4/ Lost Planet/ RE5/ Bionic Commando engine.

Which is pretty interesting. Fire for example is a lot more important in Far Cry 2, things catch on fire way easier and fire spreads pretty far, accidentally shooting a oil lamp can cause a wild fire across a field. In Far Cry 3 fire is barely there as a gameplay feature, something that can't be used by the player, whereas fire is a very important tool in Far Cry 2.

Animals are rare in Far Cry 2 and I think there are only a couple of different animals around. Far Cry 3 is filled with different animals that all do similar things and aren't fun to fight, nor are they that threatening, they're a nuisance and source of materials, nothing else.
Fire was definitely the awesome thing about 2, along with the multiplayer map editor, I liked making big jungles full of fuel tanks so stray (or intentional) bullets would blow them up and set the jungle on fire.

IIRC regarding the animals in 2. They originally had far more and an "ecosystem" with lions and so on but they couldn't get the animal AI to work right and all the predators were slaughtering all the prey very quickly after loading and then becoming "hungry" and basically rampaging across the game world or starving to death. So I think in the final game there's only the herbivores.

Started Tomb Raider 2 and it's immediately more difficult than the first game. Right away the level design incorporates a lot more obstacle course type traps with wall blades and such. Lots and lots of human enemies, too. Venice, the first real level/area is full of them and they're hardy, too. Your standard pistols turn into useless pea shooters, especially against the muscle-bound thugs that come at you unflinchingly like they're the god damned Terminator. Lots of small critters like spiders and rats, too, which Lara sometimes has a hard time hitting for whatever reason.

The first section of Venice was part of the demo back then and playing it now it seems like a bad choice. The level design is annoyingly labyrinthine here and the frequent enemy ancounters are placed such that you take a lot of guaranteed damage. Even if you know what's coming, it would be impossible to not get shot at in certain spots. Medipacks are rarer as well, partly because the secret areas reward you with small dragon statues instead of medipacks and ammo.

Other than that it's pretty much the same as the first game so far.

Playing Ass Creed 4 Black Flag.

First impressions after an hour.

The framerate on xbox 1 I guess is 30 but it feels like 20 for some reason.
The controls still suck in Ass Creed. If unity is like this, these devs deserve a kick in the balls. After Sunset Overdrive, movement systems like this are unacceptable.

Impressions after 5 hours.

The pirate thing is well realized.
Piloting a ship is more fun than traversing the landscape.
This is probably the most fun I've had with an AC game as I'm generally not a fan of the series.

Just finished GTA San Andreas. I’ll post full impressions in the dedicated thread in a day or two, as I’ve got a nasty cold right now. 1000/1000 Gamerscore took 42 hours.

Game is much, much easier than the PS2 version, but that’s not a recent comparison. In a couple years, I’ll try playing that version again, and see how it goes.

Anyway, I liked it, but trying to clear the last Achievement was a chore, just as it was with Bully. Playing the original PS2 versions of both of those, I had to convince myself that I’d done everything, and it was time to put the game away. This time, I popped the last Achievement, checked the time, and quit. It’s sad that I can let those things interrupt my joy in a favorite game.

If you're liking it, just don't burnt yourself out on collectibles and you should have a good time through and through outside one or two annoying story missions.

And then don't come back for Unity or you'll hate the series again.

Tales of Zestiria continues to be the best PS2-era style jrpg I've played since Xenoblade.  It's a great rpg like the old days, lots of adventuring, non-derpy cast, actually sort of passable story, battle system is rad as usual for the Graces/Destiny team.  It's been a while since I played a good Tales game, so pretty happy with this.

Banner Saga ep1 is an evil fucking game!  It's like the worst parts of Oregon trail where bad shit is constantly happening and fucking you over except with a 12 hour long srpg where you lose party members you've built up because you choose the wrong choice in a dialogue option >_<

Still like it though, but they need to fix that you can't take back movement after you've already moved and then realize you can't hit the enemy from where you moved to :|

Essentially a slightly better Rare game without locking off areas.

basically yeah

I don't care if you're game is open world, but put some thought into each individual area, and if you're gonna have quests then make them real objectives instead of just asking you to walk to certain areas. shit is so boring.

Yeah I've been digging it and not reloading but it's like playing a survival game.  I'm always running low on everything and characters are always getting injured in battle.  Otoh, I started out the game all Paragon style saving people and being the good guy, but by ch.5 where I am now I'm playing avoiding conflicts, not taking risks, leaving people to die and even stealing supplies if I got to.  Harsh times, harsh times.

I'm still kind of mad though that I lost my best attacker with a radius high damage attack a few chapters back to some freak accident dialogue choice.  Don't really have any good multi-enemy attackers anymore.

Played a couple hours of Captain Toad.  I decided to take it slow and complete every stage 100%.  It's obviously very easy but it is a fun enough game.  Nintendo handled this game the right way: no BS, just moving from stage to stage with a little scene here and there that you can move around in.  I hate having to use the Gamepad but the game has designed a number of obstacles around it.  Still a shame that you can't use ZR or something instead of touching the touchpad.  A good game.

Back to remember me and am frequently overwhelmed by the aesthetic visuals and audio, while annoyed and put off by some of the ludological visual choices. Jump-able gaps are stunningly broad looking, and many jump-up overhangs are taller than expected but, on the other hand, many clearly traversible height walls which I should be able to mantle are not, and some clearly low height drops will result in fall-to-death. More than this, having Spammer (projectile weapon) targets become un-targetable and still display what looks like an interactive icon is confusing.

Encounters sometimes feel cheap. There's a fight where invisible Leapers damage the spotlight I needed to make them visible, which then introduces a new special ability. The power can only be used once against them, and then they're impervious to attacks again. I died repeatedly before realizing the spotlight has repaired itself. A simpler solution would have been to add standard Leapers to the encounter, which would again power up the Special Ability instead of leaving me utterly helpless and frustrated with the only path forward being one the game previously showed me was impossible.

I'm still enjoying the Metàl Hurlant nonsense and froo-froo riddled story, and excellent soundtrack.

The Long Dark seems like the kind of survival game I would be into. No monster or zombie bullshit. Just you, the cold wilderness, and animals. I'm curious what the story mode will be when it comes out for real. A more structured survival experience sounds more appealing to me than just sandbox roaming around.

beat both characters in Muramasa Rebirth, doing post-game now.  This game has some of the best presentation ever...the graphics, music, sound, the new translation, etc.  it's all just on another level.  Been playing on PSTV through an actual nice stereo set up.  George Kamitani is a talented motherfucker.  I feel like Vanillaware has taken a while to hit the spot with playability to match up to the art and gameplay genres they shoot for, but with Rebirth and especially Dragon's Crown, they killed it.  Their next game might be pretty amazing.

I thought Muramasa was boring as fuck on Wii. I guess I'll replay it with my PS+ copy. Dragons Crown was super awesome from what little I played.

Hmmm, yeah gotta play both.

Just got another Dodonpachi Daioujou 2-ALL with a near-perfect run (for my routes). I think that's about as far as I'm going to push this game. The next big steps for me would be starting to fully chain 2-4 and entering 2-5 with at least four hypers, but I don't think I'm going to subject myself to that hell. For now, I'm more than satisfied with this achievement. :)

Judging by the most recent video you posted, doing anything in that game is an achievement as far as I'm concerned.

Wii version forces you to press up to jump, which I imagine would quickly suck any possible fun out of it.  It's not the deepest action game, but it'll force you to play right or die on Chaos mode.  That said, it is definitely repetitive, so if you don't like the first few hours, you might not get into it.  Each chapter is running, beating random encounters to level up, search for items, beat boss, forge new swords, repeat, plus there are some arenas with big fights for other items.  and both characters play the same :lol

dragon's crown is a big improvement in the gameplay department.  I wanna play as every class and there's a shitload of content and it feels fun to play through the whole time.

Vita version fixes that up to jump bullshit  :kobeyuck by using the X button to jump.

Also i finished the game but i just have no interest in

1. getting the other endings
2. play as the dude since he fights the same way (even though is story is different).

Need to get back to dragon's crown also (beat it with the dwarf because throwing enemies/boulders all over the place is fucking awesome)

they hit the nail on the head with Dragon Crown's gameplay.  I think muramasa beats it in terms of presentation, but just going by genres, it should since muramasa is kind of an action rpg and heavy on story/world building.  I didn't pay that close attention to the story, but I liked the translation, which I hear is also a big improvement to the wii version.

Get the DLC for Muramasa. They're bite-sized stories that you can burn through in no time and each character has a radically different playstyle than the others, some of which I prefer even to the original duo. They pretty much took the "Momohime and Kisuke play the same way" complaint that everyone had to heart.

My favorite time with the core Muramasa Rebirth content was doing Shura (one-hit kill) mode. It plays like Legend mode rather than Chaos, but you only ever have a max of 1 HP. Unlike Odin Sphere before it, the game is really well tuned towards giving you all the tools and abilities to never get hit, plus it forces you to actually learn and explore all the different varieties of sword arts. Sometimes I'd stick around with a weaker sword just bcause it had an OP ability (lot of hits/invulnerability period) versus a stronger-sword stat-wise having a garbage one. You really learn to appreciate the items that restore weapon durability/give you infinite use for a while.

are there points of no return for sidequests in Dragon Age Inquisition? I'm bored with the hinterlands and want to move on, but the side area I tried (the rainy swamp) kicked my ass. if I go to the next main story mission will I be fucked?

Playing Emerald Dragon on SFC, which is a fun and charming little 16-bit RPG. Unfortunately, it also has a very steep encounter rate. Coupled with the fact that battles take a while (imagine a battle system like the early Ultima games, but with all your party members AI controlled), it gets annoying very quickly.

Remember Me was just beginning to endear itself to me, when I encountered the Elite Enforcer, which has a force field which causes feedback which damages the attacker (me, remember?), and is immune to ALL the specials Nelin has currently unlocked by this point of the game, which is a known-fucking-set in this content tourism game. The in-game Journal entry on the enemy says he’s vulnerable to Sensen Camo, but I don’t have that yet. Looking online, I find he is only vulnerable to “cooldown pressen,” for whatever reason, BUT the attacks will still hurt me. Unlike the other attacks, they also hurt the Elite Enforcer as well as me.

The other big lesson these DONTNOD guys need to know is not to include canned dialog during Do-It-Again-Stupid sequences, because when I’m already annoyed that I’m doing the sequence for the fifth time, the last thing I want is to hear the enemy mocking me with the exact same line they used the last four times. More than that, DIAS sequences do not, ever, make the player feel heroic, which is really the goal of content tourism gaming.

Still pretty, but I’m excited to finish the story, find out where things go, and set it aside.

So you found it to be pretty balanced?  I was gonna avoid this mode since it seemed like there were so many ways to get nicked by enemies.  And unless I'm doing it wrong, blocking seems useless since it takes tons of frames to even start blocking and blades break so fast.  I guess part of that mode would also involve abusing the roll and that meal that gives you temporary invincibility?

i guess i'd have to git gud
