Find and grab the Leadership Magazine in the Ragazines store on the second floor of Royal Flush Plaza. Keep it in your inventory and you'll never have to worry about wimpy survivors again.

There's a sidequest in Bravely Second that allows you to choose whether to get rid of taxes in a community or tax the living fuck out of them. I chose the later. :lawd

The property tax assessor in Dungeon Siege III is one of my favorite moments in gaming. He's even a diminutive goblin.

There's a few cheap(ish) things that I am considering, but most of these discounts are what things usually go on sale for and thus aren't anything worth getting particularly excited for.

I like how the DLC stuff in Curtain Call has their own unique stage backgrounds as well.  Very nice stuff.  I agree that sometimes the track selections are a little questionable when they pick some weaker/boring tunes over great songs not included, but overall I really like this tracklist.  Xenogears is still the best music of all time.  Too bad it just gets 1 song  :-X

Also this game reminds me how Crisis Core is the best FF game post XII.  Genesis-stuff aside, I really miss that game.  Wish we had more well-made emotional character FFs.  That music, that ending <3

hi five to that whole post Xenogears was Mitsuda's best work

and i knew there were other crisis core appreciators out there! the tone, the minigames, the music all did a great job of capturing the feeling of ff7. my favorite ff follow up after x-2.

Yeah, Crisis Core's soundtrack is what put Ishimoto on the map for me.  Then The World Ends with You soundtrack, and Dissidia soundtrack and the dude was my favorite new composer at SE.  His Type-0 stuff is a mixed bag with some really good tunes, but some lesser stuff, idk that whole game production was a mess.  Since Type-0, he's been underused at Square, the only soundtrack he's composed has been the OST for the new Team Ninja arcade Dissidia.

Like I get that Versus and KH3 have set composers and there's no other FFs in production right now, but I hope he gets another big rpg soundtrack to compose at Square sometime soon.  Dude is too good to let waste away on fighting games.

Played a little Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak

Really liking it so far. I'm surprised how good the tone of the cinematics are. Reminds me of Battlestar Galactica a lot.

Game has a real desperation feel to it since you don't have a lot of resources and need to be intelligent about your tactics. The fact that the enemies love to poke and prod at you means you're constantly on your toes.

I also picked up Hyper Light Drifter.

And boy does that game not work for me at all. I'm finding it incredibly difficult. Something feels wrong about the way it plays. Like I expect to be more nimble and agile than the game will allow. Maybe I'm playing it wrong. Either way it's not clicking with me so I'm getting a refund.

Disappointed because it's got amazing style. Thought I would love it.

Finished inFamous Second Son (got all trophies besides 2nd playthru on Evil Karma). I liked Delsin's character, but man is he overpowered as fuck (he's basically Peter from Heroes pre-nerf).

But I dunno why the game felt like it was the first time they made an inFamous game. Super bare bones and simplistic.

Gonna play Until Dawn next... then I saw it was 2am and I dunno if I was in the mood for that. ROFL

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak continues to be tons of fun but super challenging and tense.

I didn't mention it but the entire game is framed around you moving a giant carrier ship across the desert to investigate an artifact anomaly that may answer questions about your origins on the planet. Along the way you're traveling deep into enemy territory and unexplored lands and being constantly harassed.

So there's this mission where you and an ally carrier are converging on an enemy carrier who just escaped. You both mount a plan to lure the enemy away from an important supply cache so you can scavenge then come in and flank the enemy. However while you're doing this the enemy carrier breaks off and ambushes you while you're scavenging.

After this long mission you're tasked with taking out the enemy carrier. I thought I had enough forces but as I pushed forward I kept losing units to the point where I basically just has a few armored units and my air-forced. I ended up slowly moving my carrier - who is not that strong all told - just close enough to the enemy base of operations and just sent volleys of air teams to the enemy carrier slowly whittling its health down until it finally died.

Great I win. But now I have basically no forces for the next missions which I bet will be just as difficult.

Just beat Chapter 4 in Danganronpa... while it's still really fun, the sheen has worn off a bit. Some of the trials go on for a bit too long and there's no chance to save in the middle of them (with one exception so far), not to mention a lot of my favorite characters were already axed, and barely any of the main mysteries of the game have been revealed...

got my Dreamcast out to revisit gamings most overrated console. here's my impressions

phantasy star online: there's no online so i can't troll anyone. all that's left is fetchquests. pass

sonic adventure: i hated this game at release and my god it's aged so much worse. poor level design mixed with terrible camera and spot controls make the game almost unplayable. it also has lots of cutscenes that are pure unwashed buttcheeks. I'll post one so we can all laugh at the shit animation together.

sword of the berserk: much worse than i remember but still kind of fun. has a ton of cutscenes and you don't control anything but the fight scenes. there's no lock on,  controls are very sloppy, and enemies have poor tells, but it's still fun to hack shit up.

space channel 5: a music game where instead of songs you get Simon says repetition. didn't like this back in the day and it's still boring now. at least the asthetics are hilariously ugly late 90s.

Grandia 2: hey look an actual good game. combat is fun and it has generic but decent story. sucks that the main character is a reddit troll tho. really annoying. otherwise a lot of fun.

I agree with DC games generally looking better than the majority of PS2 games nowadays - the image quality is so much better (especially using a VGA box) and textures are generally cleaner at the expense of fill rate/geometry (PS2 DA FILL RATE MONSTAH!). Way too many PS2 games have shimmery graphics and bland grey/brown color palettes (even if last gen is more known for them).

N64 would get my vote. In its entire library, exclusive games worth owning nowadays for single player purposes are:

Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Super Mario 64
Star Fox 64
Paper Mario

Everything else has aged like dung or has been bested ten times over. The nostalgia for N64 shit amounts to a handful of games that everyone got bored of.

The Dreamcast at the very least had great arcade ports, awesome and goofy console gimmicks, cutting edge graphic capability on consoles, excellent multiplayer games. The cons for the Dreamcast is the horrid controller, horrid amount of memory for its memory cards, horrid grinding noise, and a small library of games in general.

Still way better than the N64 though.

Original Xbox would be mine, aside from a few exclusive Sega releases and Live-compatible fighters (back in the day when original Xbox live was still up) I couldn't really find much to like about it. Well, Outrun 2 and Panzer Dragoon Orta are top-tier games by any measure, but compared to PS2, DC and even Cube, it's lacking. Especially in the RPG department. (Jade Empire and Fable SUCKED) The 360 was a huge step up, aside from those hardware failures and Kinect shenanigans.

I don't really like the N64 too much but Sin and Punishment, Ogre Battle 64, Mischief Makers, Bangai-O, and of course the 2 Zeruda games are all top notch.

welp i stand corrected. never played Xbox but the n64 was hot ass and isn't properly recognized as trash by the younger generation. when half of your top 10 list is Rare games you know you don't really have a key to stand on.

also since we're mentioning the few good games on the system i need to do my obligatory mention of doom 64. game was fucking awesome and second only to doom 2 in a ranking of classic doom.

Still playing UC4, chapter 12 now I think.

Probably the best looking game I've ever seen, like WOW. But the gameplay is kind of boring. Too many no skill climbing sections again. Shooting is ok. Story is nice and the game has charm. But I don't think I'd be up for another Uncharted now.

SRW Moon Dwellers - Looks amazing, but gameplay is questionable early on.  May need to write a long "READ ME IF YOU ARE PLAYING SRW FOR THE FIRST TIME" when the English version comes out in August as people trying this as their first SRW may be really turned off because they made some really hardcore extreme difficulty decisions.

999-2/Good People Die/Virtue's Last Reward - Man, this game is awesome!  I feel bad I waited like 5 years to play it or something.  Gonna enjoy the heck out of this and then pick up ZTD.  One thing this reminded me is how much I like puzzle games.  I gotta get back to the last 2 Layton games as well.

Project Diva: Future Sound - Super awesome music game.  224 tracks, up there for GoTY with Hitman.  I've beat ~100 songs, have 130/224 left to beat and I've found about 30 out of those 100 that are good tracks so  far.

Theatrhythm: Curtain Call - Still playing this and still fun.  Nothing amazing, nothing bad, just going through the motions in quest mode enjoying the good music.

Rhythm Heaven Megamix - Eh, still just ok.  Did a couple of mini-games I really didn't care for.  Working through this slowly.

Beyond - Haven't played this since it got really bad.  I looked at the walkthrough to see how far I am, and I'm about 40% through, so at some point I'll finish this just to see where the story goes, but this is the worst David Cage game x 100.  Hopefully he's learned from this mess and Detroit is not about action sequences, and is instead about narrative choices which is what the trailer looks like, so that's good.

Dead Rising 2 OTR - demi can lol at me all he wants, but I dropped this about halfway and I'm done with it.  The grind by lvl.16 or so got ridiculous.  I mean when taking out a Psycho boss and escorting a survivor all the way back (something that takes 20-30 mins) doesn't even give enough PP to gain one level...yeah, fuck this.  And this is only lvl.16/50.  I don't even want to imagine what a grind this version of DR2 is towards the later half.  Also replaying the bosses from DR2 reminds me that they generally suck, the survivors are still dumb even using a survivor magazine they'd get held up and caught halfway across a mall section while you're at the door and die before you get back to them.  Everything about OTR seems like it was built for co-op and single player is just DR2 but way more tedious.  Plus at the end of the day it's just replaying DR2, so I'm out.  Looking forward to DR4 though.

It's not a 5 or a 6, but it has issues.

Archaic save points, lack of fast travel combined with lots of backtracking with or without sidequests, a few ridiculous difficulty spikes, wonky camera that seems to be attached to the ground.

All easily fixable issues that would make it a very solid game. The cutscene / story presentation doesn't bother me at all and if anything I actually prefer it the modern JRPG stuff. Length is fine too. I'd probably play far more JRPGs these days if they didn't use 80 hours as a selling point.

Finished up Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak.

It hits a very specific note the entire time and doesn't really deviate that much. Enemies tend to break the rules you are bound by - in that they aren't restricted by resources. That's pretty common in RTS games but when resources are so limited you can easily put yourself in no-win situations. That's obviously the point though.

The last mission was pretty brutal and I had to bump the difficulty down.

Never stopped enjoying myself the entire time though had it gone on longer it may have lost it's appeal.

thumbs up!

I think I'll give Homeworld 2 a try soon now.

Probably more like 20.

And on second consideration, I wouldn't recommend it. 5 is a little harsh, but there's some serious QA missed on the last third or so of the game.

That's too bad.  Exist Archives is a solid 7-8/10 but the game has like no budget.  Tri-ace at this point just has no budget to do anything sadly :(  Either way pretty sure they're mobile only or dead after Star Ocean V & Exist Archives both completely bombed.  They're not even involved in the Valkyrie Profile mobile game that's running.  It's too bad because Tri-ace still designs neat battle systems and gameplay systems.

I played a little of Homeworld 2

It's surprisingly hard to play versus the newest Homeworld. It's basically plays on a flat plane but I still found it difficult to keep track of units and issue commands. Units seemed to not attack enemies automatically which I assume is a toggle or AI tactic but the UI was a little hard to get a grasp on. It's got way more stuff than the new one.
