Doublefine's Headlander is available. I bought it, and played an hour or so while stunningly jetlagged last night. I'll post impressions in the dedicated thread if I ever regain coherency.

so is Setsuna a good game on its own or does it feel like it borrows too heavily from old games? i wanna try it (on sale) but i just want to know if it has its own individual personality.

It definitely has its own personality (the more somber tone of the quest, snowy/cold environments, the piano music) but those elements might not be to everyone's taste. The environments feel pretty repetitive (there's snowy town A, snowy town B, ice cave 1, ice cave 2, mountain 1, mountain 2, etc) and the music, while good, lacks the diversity present in older RPG soundtracks. The game doesn't really get bogged down in long cutscenes or long back-and-forth map traversals like newer RPGs, which is nice.

$40 may be a hard pill to swallow, especially for a non-retail game (I was initially hesitant and this is the kinda game I'd normally be really into) but on sale I'd say it's worth trying. It certainly comes closer to evoking the feeling of older games than all of the indies that claim to be inspired by the 16-bit classics, and (since I think I'm near the end) doesn't really overstay its welcome. But it's not without flaws (repetitive environments, confusing 'momentum' system, some long dungeon crawls towards the end of the game).

Basically, if you're looking for a game that matches Chrono Trigger, you'll be disappointed. If you keep your expectations in check you'll probably enjoy it.

How is the combat? I love me some JRPG types but I hate waiting for battles or a huge amount of meaningless battles and uneven difficulty/difficulty spikes annoy me to the point where I'll stop playing

Well, the combat isn't Lost Odyssey or Xenosaga slow, but it's not Bravely Default on 4x fast forward fast. There are some times when you feel the ATB is taking a bit of time to fill up, and some of the monsters can be a bit on the damage spongey or the high dodge side (the stupid foxes riding the snowballs who keep evading all your attacks!). Not so bad but a bit compounded in some of the later dungeons. You are able to skip some encounters by running along the edges of the screen, and you can use an smoke bomb like item to escape (have to use an item to run).

There are a few big difficulty spikes in a couple of the boss fights:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
one of them has a regen move that recovers a LOT of HP, that practically forces you to use a certain character and his Dispel move

I was playing FUT last night, division 8, got hammered 10-0  :lol

I could have gone defense I guess but I was tired and wanted to keep attacking. Playing late is not a good idea too many pro's.

About midway through Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.  I like it, but I actually wish there were no enemies, no stealth and it was just a walking sim story game like Dear Esther.  The walking through the factory towards the heart of the machine while picking up story entries is really engrossing.  The stealth stuff just makes me stop moving fast and sit and move around enemies.  It's easy, but it just slows me down and takes me out of the story stuff.  I know most people wanted more of that, but I'm fine with a good walking sim.

Maybe 5 or 6 levels into DOOM at this point.  Love the movement and how each combat arena basically feels like a multiplayer Q3A map with enemies.  Some of the fights are starting to get a bit rough and it's annoying when your last checkpoint is half the map away :|  Also every since their introduction early on I fucking hate the reflection shield guys.  They're no fun at all to fight and at this point I just waste all my chainsaw getting rid of them first.  I don't mind the actual tough bigger enemies, because at least they are fun to fight, the shield guys are just fucking annoying and when you die because your aim's a bit off and your own bullets are reflecting back and tearing through your life it's frustrating.  Stupid enemy type in a game like this that's run n' gun.

Down to the last 20 or so songs in Project Diva Future Sound to clear on HARD.  Still good fun.

Gonna take me forever to get through Virtue's Last Reward because there's so many freaking branches.  But I do like each of the puzzle rooms.  They're the high points.  I'm like on Branch 5/18 now I think.

Beyond still sucks but I get through like one 40 min chapter a week.  Just did the side story where main character gets to live the homeless life for 40 mins!   :'(  I'm hate playing this at this point.  By the end this may win the award for the worst story I've ever played in a videogame that was story-based.

Still playing Theatrythm FF: Curtain Call here and there.  Already have like a billion rhythm points and seen the ending.  But I bought all $100 of DLC since I got the game for $20 and I really love the music, so I'm still working through the 320 song list.  Good news is I finally got good enough to play on Ultimate difficulty, so I can make it through most field songs on Ultimate and some of the battle songs.  Right now trying to go through all the tracklist on ultimate and I'll see where that goes.  Planning on playing this and Project Diva as my main music games for the next year or two until something better comes, so I'm fine just picking it up here and there when I want some SE music.  No rush.

Playing/Watching Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator's story mode after clearing arcade mode with everyone for their prologue stories.  About 60% through the main story now.  Between that and playing M.O.M. mode and some online, really enjoying it.  Sign+Rev is probably my favorite home fighting game since VF5.

Picking up Tales of Berseria at the end of next week, so will try to clear a couple of these in the next week I think.  No expectations for that one, but I'll give it a shot as my rpg until P5 in mid-September.

Started Zero Time dilemma mainly because virtue's last reward ended on such a cliff hanger. So far though it's been sorta "meh" I was a huge fan of 999 and was mixed on VLR but the quantum mechanic feels played out. You're so used to it that it removes any real sense of urgency to your choices because you know you're just going to have to go back and redo it in the other path. So it feels like "go to point x choose option a. See cutscene. Do puzzle. Go back to point x choose point b..." The fact that you're choosing to kill some people lacks any impact because you know you'll just do it again and choose to save them.

I'm up to Chapter 4 in Mind-0. I'm not a huge fan of the way there's a two hour info dump to start the game off, and then basically no plot for the next 10 hours. Also, it seems like there's about 5 enemies in total that they just palette swap. I wasn't expecting much from this game, but this is a little ridiculous.

I spent about 12 hours playing Elite this weekend. Did a little combat, little exploration, little mining.

It reminded me of my time with EVE Online back when I played. I even did the thing I did in EVE where I took a mission that was many many systems away then struggled to get back because I kept getting ganked by pirates.

I'm struggling a bit with some of the mechanics of finding where missions are but I understand most of the basics.

Anyone play this at all? I don't have Horizons, how much does that add? I know there's planetary landing - what does that entail? What can you do?

Finished Broken Age on Vita (PS+) -- nice visuals. 2nd half was just one giant puzzle. First half was more "classic" point and click stuff. The Hexpial wiring puzzle was the worst thing ever. Got all trophies except the "speedrun" one -- which is fucking distinguished mentally-challenged to include in a game like this.

Finished Grim Fandango on Vita (PS+) -- just used a trophy walkthrough to run through it. I guess it was cool. I feel no nostalgia towards the game. Easy platinum

Playing New Little King's Story on Vita now at the behest of my darling.

Finished Mirror's Edge Catalyst on XB1. Meh. Doing cleanup now, hopefully doesnt take too long.

Messing with Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 on 3DS. Would like to finish this before SMT4 and DQ7.

Picked up Mega Man Legends 2 and Granstream Saga at the local retro gaming convention this past weekend, so I'll probably start one of those next.

I've only played the first one for a few hours but it seemed really good. The new mode is great if you want a more directed experience, and it comes with the old classic mode if you prefer more customization.

Finished Zero Time Dilemma
Thoughts:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
FUCKKKKK!! WHAT THE FLYING FUCKITY FUCK WAS THAT SHIT?

999 was great. VLR was mixed. But this? What the fuck is this? They might as well have called it "Zero Dilemma time" because there was no real sense that anything was lost when you made your choice. Let Phi die in a fire? Or shoot sigma? Who the fuck cares? you're going to just go back to where you can save the one you killed in less than 5 minutes anyway. In 999 you hadn't figured out the whole multiple timeline thing so it was an intense experience. VLR the paths were rather long so each choice was a smallish game that would take you a bit of time. This bite sized shit? It made none of it matter. That's not even getting to the non-sensical flow, I was stuck for a good long time because I couldn't figure out I had to go back and do the vote I had already done again. And then there's the silliness of it all. Quantum shifting. A machine that replicates you back in time. Delta and Phi. Oh and introducing that Delta was there the whole time, that made no sense with the whole "With me there are 10" of course the fuck there is! And who the fuck solves a 22 letter anagram in 3 seconds?  My god what a mess. And then, to top it all off they end it without letting you make the most important choice of all. WTF? This is a game so bad it ruins the developer's reputation in one fell swoop.

Tales of Berseria is really junk 5 hours in.  The cast is bland, the battle system sucks, the fields are empty backtracking, music sucks, towns/world suck.  Easily one of the worst games in the franchise history so far.  It's boring and there's no fun at all yet.

Maybe it'll be a Kirby's Air Ride and get good 20 hours in, but not gonna waste that much time.  I give it 5 more hours to get into shape or I'm out.  So far it's hold forward and mashing O the game in a first 10 hours of FFXIII tutorial way except with 10x worse characters, graphics and music than FFXIII.

I looked at some videos of the battle system later on and it looks like there's a ton of playable characters in 4 player battles so maybe things will improve once more of the cast joins.  Restricting the first 5 hours to solo combat or two character combat (and those two characters have no rapport with each other) was a really bad idea.

I liked Zestiria a good deal for the first 15-20 hours.  I was defending it against all the fucking Alicia losers.  Berseria not really.

Then again Japanese players seem to love it.  But I think Japanese gamers have the worst taste on earth so I don't feel the need to agree.  A lot of people on gaf seem to really like it too.  Idk, my tastes have stopped aligning with most people.  I can't relate to the mainstream western gamer who loves FPS and thinks everything out of Japan is confusing and wacky jappy, I can't relate to the mainstream Japanese gamer that loves their T&A all female fanservice casts and padded filler content.  I have my own gaming tastes and I relate to myself and that's about it.

I feel like most rpgs coming out of Japan are pretty weak lately.  Only jrpg in recent memory that's been a pleasant surprise to me has been Exist Archive, mostly because it comes off as a 6/10 no budget game but ends up as an 8/10 no budget game but with a good cast and writing and decent battle system.  SMTIVF was good too, but that was expected.

I have faith in two upcoming jrpgs at the moment.  P5 because Atlus megaten hasn't really let me down, and Cold Steel III because Falcom is good and they've pushed all the good Cold Steel stuff into III (maybe IV) so there's no way it's not going to at least be good.  Everything else...who knows.  I honestly thought given FFXV looking trainwreck that Berseria would probably be the better game as there was no way it could be worse than FFXV is gonna be, but so far it's looking like there's no way FFXV can end up worse than Berseria.

Picked up F1 2016 for the Xbone cause looked like the PC version is busted on lower and mid spec machines for the minute according to the Steam forums (Game has bad performance on AMD at launch. Shocking, I know)

God this game is so fucking nerdy with the minutiae of F1 it's brilliant. You are even allowed do the formation lap to warm up our tires and brakes before the start of the race and how well you do it affects your start. You also can do manual starts where you have to hold the clutch, hold your revs and let go on green light. Plays great as well since it controls really sharp, but you also have to watch your car a lot since a lot of this season's problems are with oversteer. It does some really clever mini games in the practice sessions as well to help you learn the track and manage your tire wear too.

I did a full race of the opening race of the season in Australia and it was insane even just running around in a backmarker shitty Renault trying to hold my team target for 20 laps. Really glad they nailed this one because some of the previous years were so close but were held back.

I enjoy the combat and the feel of movement, unfortunately I hit a crash or two and it seems to load a bit slow after you die (probably due to the port quality).

I think it might have been a bad idea to play New Little King's Story (Vita) instead of the original. It runs at like 20FPS when you're running stacked with your squad. Sometimes even by yourself.

Might have to replay on Wii. I believe the PC version is based on this version.

It's an -ok- Pikmin game, but theres just way too much fluff. I think Overlord is better.

f1 2016 has lots of tutorials and there is good range of customization for how hardcore u wanna be so it's not too bad. obviously the game is made for people who are into f1 so you might need to be familiar with f1 racing though, since a lot of the minutiae is not the sort of stuff other kinds of racing sports have and can seem strange by comparison (the communication between the driver and the pit is v involved, the penalty system, etc) and isn't explained like the player is a dumbass.

Berseria's growing on me a little as I'm getting deep into the battle system (playing on hard, switching between characters constantly for whoever has the best attacks against the enemy type in each fight) and more gameplay systems are opening up.  The game is still too easy so far, hard mode seems like normal and in a Tales game second should be mostly easy outside of bosses, but hard should be a challenge.

Also you get a lot of costumes in game non-dlc, I can dress my lead up in a giant mascot suit and I didn't have to pay DLC money for it, so that makes me happy.  Story also is getting a little better since the 4th party member to join talks constantly with the 2nd party member and creates some normal Tales chattiness even though the MC doesn't really talk much and 3rd playable character is kind of mute.

Still feels just kind of alright, but 10 hours in the game's gone from being a D+ Tales to being a C+ Tales.  Supposedly the game is long as fuck at 60 hours+, so it may just be a slow burn initially.  I'll see where it goes.

Dungeons & towns seem identical to Zestiria fwiw.  In fact a lot of them are just the same dungeons/towns with a slight graphical upgrade.

And yeah, the game is somewhere between FFX/FFXIII levels of linear so far.

It's incredibly customiseable as well so if you just want to race, you can race. Or you can turn off every assist and play really hardcore. The only problem is that the performance on consoles is wobbly (Not as aggressively bad as console PCARS but both versions can get FPS drops and bad screen tear) and not much better on mid end PC's (You need a 280x/970 at least) and it has some bugs like the AI and penalty system being busted on Bahrain circuit. I did a full race where I ended up changing two front wings because the AI braked far earlier than they should have on Turn 1. Then a safety car because Danil Kyvat spun out (Realism) and a ton of the AI pack and myself were given penalties for "Illegal blocking" when holding position like we were supposed to.

If you would love a racing sim with a lot of minutae and clever touches right now. Go for it but if you are in no rush. I'd wait till the bugs are stomped out a few patches in.

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon: has nothing on the original, but still a very fun game. I loved exploring the mansion bit by bit in the original, but that's not how it works in Dark Moon. There's a few different mansions, each consisting of a few rooms. So it just feels like a series of boxes.

Pokemon Go: Easily the game of the year. 104 Pokedex, level 24.

Mario Kart 8: Still   :delicious.

Feel like dipping into the Steam backlog. Is Mafia 2 good?

I beat Genso Suikogaiden vol 2 and I Am Setsuna. Really liked Setsuna and think people are a bit too harsh on it. Suikogaiden vol 2 was a tad more interesting than the first game, but these really should have been released together as one package (they are each visual novels that take ~3 hours to get through). Worth playing for those who want a bit of Suiko fan service and can't get enough of those games and don't mind VNs.

Yes it's fine. Theres even a part where you fight naked (fat) men in the prison shower when they try to rape you.

Picked up Shadowrun Returns a little while back and want to give it a try.  Am going on a little vacation this weekend and will be bringing my Surface so I plan to start it then.  Keep wondering if maybe I should have gotten this on my phone, but the bigger screen will probably make things easier to see.

Also got Sengoku Basara: Sanada Yukimura-Den for PS4.  I wasn't really that excited for this -it looked like another SB4 expansion- and while it kind of is, the game has a more focused narrative on a specific set of characters (The Sanada family -Yukimura, his brother Nobuyuki, and his father Masayuki plus Date Masamune.  Apparently Sasuke is playable too.  You also initially play as Yukimura and Date as kids, lol) and has some moveset changes for Yukimura and Date.  Nobuyuki is big and slower, with chain grabs like Hideyoshi.    Daddy Masayuki is my favorite newcomer.  His moveset is pretty flashy and he's like a ninja Michael Jackson with a fedora.  :lol  You can turn invisible, except for the hat, and the enemies will just stare at it floating around, lol.  It even works on bosses and is a great way to escape and get away to recover.  His super move summons a giant Takeda Shingen statue-like being and he mimics its moves like he was controling a giant robot, lol.  You only play as these few characters in the story modes, but you can unlock a series of trials/survival modes/free battle, which will let you play as all of the SB4 Sumeragi cast as well, including Date and Yukimura with their old movesets.  The DLC outfits from SB4 are also supposed to be unlockable in this game using in-game currency.  If I had to choose between SB4 Sumeragi or Yukimura-Den, though, I'd still go with Sumeragi over this one.

Speaking of Sengoku...I got Sengoku Otome Legend Battle for Vita.  This is based on on a Pachinko series of games that also got an anime series a few years back (came out here as Battle Girls: Time Paradox) and features gender-swapped versions of historic Japanese characters beating each other up.  The game is a 2-on-2 battle arena versus game, so it's kind of like the Gundam Vs. games...with uguu~.    Seems pretty simplistic but good for what it is.  I would have preferred something that copied Senran Kagura though.

Played some KOF14 at a friend's house (I still haven't opened my copy actually :P), and it's fucking awesome. Controls like a dream and has such a great character roster, and some sweet tunes.

Also started playing Mega Man Legends 2 and Final Fantasy Legend 3. Both games taking place in a world overrun by water, hmm.

FFL3 has a weird plot (the "Pureland Water Entity" appears and floods the land, and you travel through time to try and stop it) and at times it's not clear where you need to go. It's weird, you can jump in the game and you see your characters at the bottom of the screen, facing large enemies... reminds me almost of Mystic Quest. It's a bit grindy so far and the scenarios aren't nearly as interesting as the other FFL games.

Mega Man Legends 2, well it controls a shit-ton better than the first, and the music is MILES better. But I did like the large, active town in the first game and the interconnected dungeons underneath the town. And now I'm up to this game's version of the Water Temple, which seems like it's gonna be a slog.

playing grounded mode in last of us and holy shit this annoying. the ai allies bump into enemies and get in my way, and clickers auto-detect and kill they get close to you. plus there's unskippable cutscenes before some areas, so this is gonna be total trial and error.

I haven't, yet... from what I recall it's more of a mini game collection than a full-fledged adventure like the others? Down the line I'll get to it...

yup it's minigames with a few parts set up like mml. tbh the gameplay isn't anything great; the real reason to play is ofc servbot overload

WATCH_DOGS has a stUBId amount of collectable content, but most of it is puzzle-driven rather than Assasssinnss Creed Masyaf find-the-flag garbage and, more importantly, it's all shown on the map, and then marked off the map when it's done. Finished all the ctOS towers, now working through Privacy Invasions and Investigations.

Still on Chapter 2 of the story.

UBI does it again :bow

I've been playing Etrian Odyssey 3 again as I never beat it my first try (got hosed in 3rd stratum) and I needed something to play on my commute to school. I actually speced a really good team this time and am cruising through the annoying 4th stratum no sweat.

Also playing Minecraft on 360 cos they added a ton of achievements since I last played. The RPG-lite stuff they added is welcome, but I think Terraria did the whole adventure thing a lot better. Still, MC is classic stuff.

Also sporadically playing the ME3 DLC. Leviathan had some cool set pieces and lore. Omega was complete and utter shit. Looking forward to getting to Citadel.

KOF14 demo is pretty good despite looking like a late PS3 game.

Project Diva X - it's nice that it's easier than F2 (which was really tough) and doesn't have those stupid star notes that keep bouncing back and forth, but I don't like how there are no longer 'music videos', it's just the characters dancing around on a stage of your choosing.

Also opened the 3 Force Quit Boxes in Zero Time Dilemma so I think I'm at the end.

As someone who struggles with rhythm games (be white, brehs) Normal mode seems super easy in Project Diva X. I've gotten 3 items on almost every song on my first attempt. I'm sure Hard and Super Hard will still kick my ass, but whatev. I'm having fun with it.
