Well the issue here is that PS2 doesn't look too hot on anything but SD, and I'd rather not plunk the cash down for a component cable for my Wii so a flatscreen CRT is all I needed. It's nice and small and it has s-video. That's all I could ask for.

Yeah, I agree. When I play a native SDTV console, I hook it up to my old CRT 25" and it all looks just fine. Playing Tobal 2 on a PS3 with HDMI to my 40" bravia looks... like crap, actually.

This game is such a chore, grind grind grind.

But I have nothing to do at work so I will keep playing.

What what what?

You don't grind in Ys.  You just get better (or spam potions in Seven).

You very much so grind in Ys. I cant attest to 7. But in the ones I have played (3, Ark of Napishtim, 1&2), you very much need to grind

i finished cladun! the final boss was very annoying,my level 40 warrior would mostly do 10 point of damage per attack but give a level 30 wizard a few skill power ups and *BAM* 130 damage per hits, that just seems unfair

anyway the enemy in the newgeon start at level 44 :lol,i think i'm going to dig here for a little to see if any cool items pop out and maybe i'll try the extra dungeon levels that got unlocked? hope they aren't a pain in the ass like the normal levels

also i've read that character can reincarnate and learn skills and magic circle from multiple job but i can't find the option anywhere, does anybody know anything about this?

Bosses are easier now yes but I still find myself beating everyone I see and you also have weapon synthesis which means, more monster beating. Game structure is repetitive like that.

Playing on Hard btw.

I grinded for about an hour in the long length of YS 7, and that was only to beat the extra bosses earlier than I was supposed to.  Flash guarding like a champ :rock

I was playing Ghost Squad and HotD on the Wii yesterday.  The only thing I hope happens with Move is that they bring over more lightgun games to PSN.  I want Police 24/7 1 and 2 at home! Wii sucks and can't do it, but move sucks slightly less and uses a camera, so it could totally pull it off! Or at least Namco should release a Time Crisis collection; they owe me considering I was one of the four people that bought a Guncon 3 to play the crappy Time Crisis 4.

Alright.  The further I get into Nier's story the more I'm liking it.  Kind of a mind fuck.  Definitely want to go directly to New Game+ after I wrap this up.

you know i'm not sure i want to bother with the extra content in cladun,i can barely survive 3 floors of the newgeon and i can't really find much loot... apparently there is a trick to make a lot of money which in turn can be used to buy super equipment but i don't feel like bothering if it's going to be like this, plus i don't see any baal to smother or the like, just a very annoying dungeon level with tons of invisible passage's

i don't really like the "subs become good main and main become good subs" rule,it's just annoying,if they wanted to make a distinction each character should have had a main level and a sub level so that with enough work you could have character that were good at both, this way you end up with a lot of character that are sucky at what they are supposed to do with no way to fix them unless you are extra meticolous

anyway hoping for zettai hero to be better than this because while good it was a little disappointing, again i refuses to think that "nippon ichi + roguelike" can't end in anything lower than awesome but after this i feel a little more wary....

Finished Ys Origin with the axe girl (there are 3 playable characters: Axe girl, staff guy, and claw man).  It was good but Ys Seven was definitely superior.  Ys Seven had bigger and more interesting dungeons, better music, more bosses, JUST GUARD.  Ys Origin had DOUBLE JUMP, platforming, and better boss fights (although Ys Seven had a better final boss).

Out of the 3 Ys I've played, I'd put 'em Oath in Felghana >> Ys Seven >> Ys Origin.  I'm looking forward to giving Ys 1+2 another shot in Jan when Xseed brings it over.  I've tried Ys 1 once but the combat was wtf weird running into boars or something.  And I gotta play VI one of these days since it's the only 3d Ys I haven't played now; but I hear it's a big step down from the others since it was the first 3d Ys and they hadn't quite got the combat perfected, so been putting it off.

Playing Darksiders now. Got done with the first real dungeon last night, and the game is pretty awesome so far. It's been so long since I've played a good Zelda game, I almost forgot how fun they could be.

Also, my Japanese Xbox randomly started working again, so I've been playing Ketsui all day. Game is so fucking good. I'm rusty as hell right now so I can barely clear stage 3, but I think on a good run I should be able to get up to stage 5. Stage 5 is absurdly hard though and it's going to take tens of hours of practice to be able to clear it, so I'll probably never get a 1-ALL. Lol at the thought of two-looping it.

Best BGM ever, or greatest BGM ever?

I'd say as a whole, the Ketsui soundtrack is one of my favorite of all time. And the arranged OST in the 360 port is even better. Amazing.

On stage 3 of God Hand, pretty much every boss/sub boss have give me problems except the second fight with Elvis which was pretty easy, I hope I don't get stuck with a hard as fuck boss far into the game and never finish it.

by the way I had no idea that the higher the level the more difficult the game gets :lol

Playing FFXII and I think I'm underleveled again. I'm dreading going to Bhujerba because it's near where I got stuck last time and Vaan and Balthier are still only level 8. Fran's 9 and Basch is 10. Does that sound right? Also, do marks even give you exp?

I've been waiting to get Sora no Kiseki PSP set from Falcom for a couple of weeks now.  Will probably be another week until I get it.  So I'm playing handheld backlog while I wait.  So far cleared KH Recoded & Spider-man Shattered Dimensions DS.  Want to get some recommendations on what I should play next.  Looking for short games around 3-10 hours because once I get my Sora set I'm dropping anything I'm not about done with on handheld.

options:
-Lunar Knights
-Apollo Justice
-EO III
-Chrono Trigger (been wanting to replay this, haven't played it since the year it came out on SNES)
-Syphon Filter PSP #1 or #2
-Metal Gear Ac!d 2
-Killzone PSP
-Wild Arms XF

I'm thinking about going with Chrono Trigger.  Anyone know about how long it is?

The Syphon Filter games and Killzone PSP are short games.

Don't go for the optional content in Chrono.  It sucks big time.

But back on topic.  I've been playing Peace Walker.  I was waiting to play on the Go since the screen is so much better.  This is the game that MGS4 should have been.  Packed with tons of content, re playability, and the stealth game play is probably the best in the series.

I would sell Lunar Knights if you could. It really reeks of those early ds games that try way too hard to use all the system's features and ends up being aggravating to play. You have to whistle into the mic to whistle ingame. Its a dpad and buttons scheme that requires you to take out the stylus to do special attacks. Way too much expostion, etc. Crap.

Anyhow, beat Amnesia: The Dark Descent.  Greaaaaaat game.

If you like Horror you must play through this.  The guys at Frictional Games are really talented.  Both Penumbra games were great and Amnesia is even better (partly because it actually has a budget, partly because it's been mainstreamed a bit).

I know they were saying Amnesia is a "bet the farm" on keeping them alive as a dev, so I hope it did well enough that they can make more horror games.  Would also be nice if someone used their engine to make their own horror stories.  The engine is open like Knytt Stories so others can make horror campaigns with it.

Yay, now my current game playing pile is clear so I can start Fallout NV now :)
Would start Vanquish except Amazon is not shipping mine for some reason and keeps e-mailing me apologizing their system is not shipping it.

Can anybody direct me to any threads about the Megaten games on DS or just give me the abridged version on whether or not I should pick them up? For pretty much the next year I'm going to be playing nothing but JRPG after JRPG, and the only questionables on DS are the Megaten games. I'm not super familiar with the series (although thanks to this upcoming blitz of JRPGs I will be) so I'm not sure whether or not they're worth the money. Actually, here's the list of games I'm going through, maybe some weeaboos can give me more ideas.

PS1:
FFVII
FFVIII
FFIX
Xenogears
Dragon Quest VII

PS2:
FFX
FFXII
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Dragon Quest VIII

Xbox 360:
Lost Odyssey
The Last Remnant
Infinite Undiscovery
Final Fantasy XIII

GBA:
Final Fantasy I & II
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI
Sword of Mana
Golden Sun
Golden Sun The Lost Age

NDS:
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest VI
Dragon Quest IX
The World Ends With You

Thankfully I already own the majority of those games, so the hard part's over. I have a pretty solid play schedule set up so I don't burn myself out, and I'm glad I finally got locked in the mood to tackle these bastards. Recommendations welcome. Just so you know, I'm not at all interested in the Persona series, although I may give it a shot sometime down the line. I'd throw SMT:DDS 1 and 2 on the PS2 list but again I'm not familiar with the series.

Infinite Undiscovery is some bottom of the barrel garbage, don't bother with it. Get Resonance of Fate, Nier, or Tales of Vesperia instead.

SMT Devil Survivor (an SRPG) is the best RPG on the DS.

Persona 3 and 4 are two of the best RPGs on the PS2. Digital Devil Saga is good too.

SMT rankings (out of what I played): P4 > P3FES > SMT3 > Devil Survivor > DDS1&2 > Strange Journey >>>>>> Devil Summoner 1 >>>>>>>> Persona 1

I keep forgetting I bought Tales of Vesperia ages ago. That's on my list too. I wanna play Infinite Undiscovery just because the dialog seems so hilariously awful, I'm dying to experience it first hand, ha.

Also forgot to add Nier. Definitely on the list. Passing on Resonance of Fate for now. Might change my mind.

Whaaaat? Grandia 1-3 are amazing. Grandia 2 on the PS2 is complete garbage though. Only play the Dreamcast version. The PC version might be good too I'm not sure.

Yeah, SD3 is worth playing too. Legend of Mana is a lot different from the other Mana games. I didn't like it but you might.

Hold up, have you ever played Wild Arms? Just the first game.

Ah I'm very glad I shared this plan with EB, so many good ideas. No, I haven't played Wild Arms. Any Wild Arms. Never played any Breath of Fire either but I was interested in Dragon Quarter from a while back so I added it to my backlog. I also keep forgetting about Blue Dragon (sorry, when I think JRPGs on Xbox 360 my mind scrambles to find anything without looking REALLY hard).

So far what I should add is Grandia 1-3, SD3, LoM, Wild Arms, Blue Dragon, DDS and Persona 1? Is it okay if I play the remake of Persona 1 for PSP or should I just nab an eboot of the original?

:lol

I love games, I just never had the patience for JRPGs, but since my PC and 360 are going to get a lot less attention next year, it's time for me to dive in to my JRPG backlog. I know I can sit through them now, because I find myself longing for a game that will suck up hours and hours of time. Can't think of a genre of games better at doing that than JRPGs :D

I've always liked them, but I just never had the reserve to finish them. Closest I ever came to beating a JRPG was the end of the second disc on FF8.

Oh my goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood.

Ran into Judge Ghis, destroyed Vaan, Fran and Balthier, totally forgot that I had Ashe, Basch and Penelo sitting in my party, whipped them out, leveled their license boards to a quickening each, unleashed a 4-hit quickening into Inferno and I put that bitch down for good. I want to marry this game.

Persona 1 is not good. But if you are going to play it, get the PSP version. It's better than the original in every way, especially since the localization of the PS1 game is notoriously bad.

Also, whoever said Darksiders is more Zelda than action game was full of shit. This game has way too much combat.

personaly i don't like devil survivor but i do like strange journey so i would go with that given the choice...

anyway are you just picking jrpg in general? why don't you give a spin to some fantranslated SNES game like shiren the wanderer the game i always try to sell to everyone or live-a-live? of course at that point you should also play chrono trigger KING OF JRPG'S!

maybe you could pick-up lunar? it's as "old animu" as a jrpg can get and it's also quite hard
parasite eve? it has a boss fight on top of a chariot driven by a horse on fire

on ps2 you could pick disgaea? techinicaly it's an srpg but it's really quite different from your average srpg
i also like gust games a lot but nobody can handle the extreme weeaboo required to play such games :'(

if you decide to pick one,i recomend to go with the original mana khemia

Sword of Mana sucks.

You should play Grandia 3 for PS2 if you haven't yet, just for the amazing battle system.

What about Legend of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3? I haven't played any of the Grandia games.

Play the Grandia games.

Like Beezy said, the battle system is so good.  I'd say it is best battle system and jrpg makers suck for not copying it.

I want a Grandia 4, goddammit. I was actually surprised as hell that we even got 3. My favorite rpgs never get sequels. :'(

Thanks much, will do. What would you say is the best entry into the SMT series?

EDIT: Oh and are the Xenosaga games worth my time?

On that list, you shouldn't bother with FF13, Sword of Mana or Infinite Undiscovery. All extremely mediocre games... I've only played Xenosaga 1 but I hated it.

I second the Shadow Hearts games (Covenant is one of the best RPGs of last gen), Grandia games (never played the 3rd one, but 1 and 2 are good. 2 is more serious and plot-intensive while 1 is more lighthearted), also if you have a Cube or Wii, Skies of Arcadia and the Baten Kaitos series fucking rocks. On the PS1, Arc the Lad 2, Alundra, Wild Arms (Wild Arms 3 on PS2 is also a good and underrated game), Breath of Fire 3 (:bow GETTING TO FIGHT A DOLPHIN :bow2), SaGa Frontier, Front Mission 3, Lunar 1 and 2, and of course Star Ocean 2 and Valkyrie Profile.

Wow, thank you guys so much for all the good ideas. I'll keep working on constructing my RPG list and when I'm done with FF12 I'll post it on here with everything added.
