Why Infiltrator?

The stealth thing looks pretty cool - is it useful?

You get a really good balance of weapons and powers. You have lots of ammo-buffing powers plus a really good offensive. On top of that, using snipers and heavy pistols rocks. They both pack a mean punch, and once you get the Viper sniper rifle you can pretty much mow down an entire mob before they squeeze a round off.

Well, it's not too late to re-roll, I guess. My thinking with picking Soldier was just: hey, they say it's a shooter, let's play it that way. I usually end up controlling the NPCs a lot of the time to try out their abilities though, so probably won't miss a whole lot. Just so long as I'm not playing the one hideously gimped class or whatever. That you only find out is gimped midway through the game.

I picked Soldier (again) for ME2, and I can't say I'm regretting it too much.  Next playthrough I will definitely be going Infiltrator, Vanguard, or Sentinel.  Will probably start over in ME1 and go completely to the rogue side.

If you haven't rerolled already, I'm sure soldier is a fine class. I was just busting your balls at first. Infiltrator is tons of fun, though I found myself wishing I had a shotgun in some later parts.

All you need is the Widow + Warp Ammo 4 + Headshot Upgrade and Infiltrator will annihilate anything you put in its way.

Great post except, the wii game doesnt have a story... what are you gonna do now?

 :'(

I think most people know my taste by now, that if the story part of a game is great, I'll overlook the gameplay side.  So in the end I was pleased with Shattered Memories because it was a neat story experience that gave me about what I expect from a Silent Hill tale.

I don't understand how people do this.

If a game has shitty gameplay, the game is shit. IMO, this is like saying "If the story in a porn is really good, I don't mind that the actual porn sucks". Everything that isn't gameplay in a video game is secondary.

Sure, I love a good story in a video game now and then, but if the actual game isn't fun to play, the story more often than not does nothing to keep me in.

Because some people really dig interesting tales?  What drives you in those cases is not the "fun" of the game but that you want to find out what happens next and you won't be satisfied until you do.

I grew up playing click & point adventure games from Sierra/Lucasarts, so I love stories in my games if they are good and not too intrusive.  I mean most p&c games have shitty gameplay and bad puzzles yet I put up with them for the story and enjoy them overall.  If I hear a P&C has an awesome story, but the gameplay sucks I'll just grab a faq and alt+tab my way through it for the story. Most horror games (Fatal Frame, Silent Hill 1/2/4, Siren) have really shitty gameplay but the story and atmosphere make them worth experiencing.

I mean I don't make excuses and say they are 10/10 games.  Even Silent Hill 2 which I think has one of the best plots in a game isn't a perfect 10 because yeah, the gameplay is objectively kinda ass.  But even if they aren't 10s or even 9s they can be good games that are 100% worth playing if you enjoy stories.

As much as I love stories, I think it's universally acknowledged that the best story in a video game is usually the lowest common denominator compared to books or even film. As a medium, I don't think many game scenario writers have perfected the ability to combine story and video game in a more seamless way, similar to Portal, Cave Story or Another World. So, regardless of how well-written or immersive a video game's story is, it's never enough if the game isn't fun to play. It's funny that you cite Silent Hill 2 because that's my main problem with that game. From what I understand the story is amazing, and I could only ever get around half-way through the apartment area. The gameplay is crippling, and I ignore people who say the shitty controls add to the suspense.

I'm envious of your ability to see games through to the end based simply on interest in the story. I can't do that. Using FAQs isn't supported by my moral code when it comes to playing video games, so that's not an option.

the best you can hope for with a video game story is a well realized universe, and I'd say that matters a lot more than whatever narrative they're trying to tell.  I think Mass Effect and Bioshock are two examples of this.

I got up to the final mission in Defense Grid last night. It looked confusing as hell, so I'm gonna try it later tonight. I'll probably go back to Torchlight or get the last few achievements in Bayonetta once I'm done.

I've been playing MW2 with some friends from like 6-10 pm every Monday through Thursday. I haven't been losing much since we started this, but I still haven't really tried hardcore.

Getting the gold medal on the last Defense Grid mission was a lot of fun.

I'm going to finish up Mass Effect 2 tonight and start getting into the Grand Ages Rome expansion. Also putting in time into Half Minute Hero, which has surprising staying power for a game where everything is so frenetic.

I was just staring at the map and trying to figure out how I could lead both groups of attackers onto the same path to the energy. Is it possible or will they always follow two separate paths?

There was a little cardboard display for it at the Best Buy that I bought it at. I'm running around in the first area right now, combat reminds me of a bit of Final Fantasy XII, which I enjoyed. I wish had more direct control over the rest of my party, but it's fun so far.

Played through the first dungeon in WKS tonight. Dialogue is pretty cringe-worthy, but I'm enjoying the battle system. If you liked Final Fantasy XII, you might like it. If you hated Final Fantasy XII, you'll hate this.

Yeah, definitely do not do play as a melee only character at the start.

Start over and pick royal.  You get soul arrow at the start which basically 1 hit kills every enemy from a safe distance before they can get near you.  It makes the start very doable as long as you take it slow until you learn the level layout (so you don't get surprised killed).

Later on you can change up your stats and make your character however you want.  But Royal is the starting point for your first run unless you are a super hardcore skillz gamer.

Played a bit more ME2. Got Mordin. Also encountered a clipping bug in his lab - I got stuck in a corner that looked big enough for me to get in/out of...then walked through the wall, outside into the skybox, around the building and back into the office! Still couldn't get back to the 'play area' though and had to reload. grrr. Good thing the auto-saves are a lot better here...

Started playing No More Heroes 2.  Lots of lols but not loving all the changes.  Where is my overworld  :'( And I dunno how I feel about all the mini-games being retro.  I liked the mini-games in the first one!

I just beat the first real boss (#50), seemed more grindy than I remember the bosses in the first game being.  Took like 5 mins of slashing.  Are all the bosses like that?  Or once you get good weapons/better stats it's more normal?

Also I feel like everything in the game is tailored around the classic controller.  I actually feel like I'm at a disadvantage using the wiimote + nunchuck in this one.  >_<

It seems like dodging would be easier on a CC and the retro mini-games feel like they'd control a lot better on a d-pad rather than analogue.

I had this happen TWICE tonight:

-Outside a subquest where you explore a wrecked ship.  Got stuck right at the beginning and was walking on the air, unable to get back on the platforms.  Luckily reloading was no problem.
-On a subquest stopping mechs from destroying a bunch of crates.  I was already have difficulty with this one, then I get stuck on a path and died from gunfire.  Quit the game for the evening after that.

My best memories of NMH1 are running around the streets at 50mph on foot searching dumpsters for awesome indie t-shirts.  I really liked the overworld.  It looked like PS1 and controlled bad on the bike, but by the end of the game you knew that city like the back of your hand and it felt alive.  It was so exciting to go to the baseball stadium finally because you'd been driving around it the whole game.  Or go out into the fields for the secret underground lab because you'd been driving by the fields wonder what's out there the whole game.  It brought consistency to the world.

The mini-games were fun because stuff like cat searching or coconut lifting was humorous and the fighting guys in a garage mini-game was just a good way to get what you bought the game for (killing dudes) but without having to commit to a main level.

Other things I really liked about NMH1 were the phone calls you got at the end of each stage and how memorable the bosses were.  So far in NMH2 it seems like they replaced the phone call with the phone girl behind a window cutscene (because they tried to get rid of every wiimote exclusive feature; I'm guessing to make it port-easy) and that sucks because now it's just a kojima boring "let's talk talk talk about a bosses background to develop them quickly" scene.  And so far none of the NMH2 bosses are very memorable.  I hope there are going to be some bosses/stages as memorable as the old lady with GIANT CANNON stage or shmup stage or fake boss like rank 5? of the original.

I also liked that weapons in the first game were stronger.  Made them worth spending the money on.

Game is fun, but lacks the charm of the first game so far and feels more by the books (including the overkill emphasis on LOOK WE ARE RETRO  :o :o :o  ::) ) Doesn't have that originality I expect from a Suda game.  Then again he didn't direct this one.  So it's not really fair to compare it to Killer 7 or NMH.

I also miss the wrestler masks and their little stories of a great mexican wrestler  :lol

Ohhh, that makes sense. I was wondering how the hell he figured out how to make a fun game. Turns out it took someone else to do it for him!

haha, yeah I feel like this game is a Suda game that's been 50% un-Sudafied by taking out the horrible looking/playing quirky shit that he puts in his games and replacing them with more mainstream acceptable bits.  And since it's a sequel just by nature it doesn't have that fresh and new feeling the original did.

Without the overworld the game basically consists of this:
Ranking battle -> Leave hotel -> Any new sidejob -> Any new sidejob -> gym -> shop -> clothes -> ranking battle -> leave hotel -> any new sidejob -> any new sidejob -> gym -> shop -> clothes -> ranking battle.

It's so systematic now that I'm finding it hard to play in long sessions as it feels very repetitive.  There just isn't much to do in the game.  Gonna have to stick to 1 or 2 ranking battles per day at this rate.

It's still a fun game, but the original NMH was one of my top5 games of 2008 so this feels like a step back.  I'm curious what Edge is going to give this.  They really like original quirky shit and gave the original a 9/10, which is damn good by their scoring.  I bet they give this one at least a notch or two lower when they finally review it.

Well since I'm not really far enough to give a recommendation or not, demi and the others who finished it could hopefully answer this better.

But I would say it's worth playing if you are:
-A fan of NMH
-Someone who didn't like NMH

If you are a fan, you should still play it because it's more of what you enjoyed.  You might be disappointed (like how sequels often are), but it's still worth playing.
If you are someone who didn't like NMH, you should try it because the changes were made FOR YOU so that you will like this game.

It's kind of like (the first half of) MGS4 or any of the dozens of games that dumbed down/streamlined their game to conform to what reviewers want.  And like what happens every time, in doing so the games lose a bit of what made them great in the first place, but they review better and more people like them.  NMH2 is taking what was a niche game trying to be a mainstream action game and is instead making a mainstream action game that's trying to look niche.  It's a subtle difference, but I feel the stuff in NMH2 is doing it for the audience "Oooh look mechs! And anime! and BLING!" whereas the stuff in NMH1 was done because Suda wanted to do it (shmup throwback, driving around a baseball field in a motorcycle, etc...).  I still like it, but as demi said in the other thread, NMH didn't really need a sequel.  Grasshopper had never done a sequel before, since like Treasure Suda is all about original ideas and doing different things.  And in the end a sequel is just more of the same.  There's definitely some originality in the new stuff, but a lot of it was already done in the first game.

As for the staff, from what I've gathered from gaf, Suda51 went from NMH to the EA game (which he's directing w/mikami producing & yamaoka composing).  During this time he also wrote the scenario and acted as executive producer on NMH2 with a mostly new team (according to gaf the only returning name in the opening credits is the sound effects guy).  I'm not even sure who did the soundtrack.  Apparently Masafumi Takada who has scored all Suda's games until now isn't credited but he may have done some?none?all? of the music and Akira Yamaoka composed a few of the boss fight tracks.

Well, I liked and didn't like NMH.  I think I will stay the course.  Will buy cheap or on 360.

bort bort bort I finally got 200/200 in Splosion Man last night  :D multiplayer was super fun, lots of teamwork and laughs. I had a friend over and did it local.

I really like that game. Just the perfect style game you could imagine having played on the Genesis back in the day.

absolutely, it was just a really engaging and well put together platformer.

I thought the multiplayer was something really special, you had to really talk to each other and co-ordinate your individual roles in getting doors open and stuff. Lots of fist pumping when you passed a hard room!

Im really hoping for some DLC or a sequel. The new Twisted Pixel game 'Comic Jumper' looks cool

Is there no online co-op? I picked this up and played several rooms; it's fun. If the netcode is crap and you've already finished, I'll probably drag my SMB-lovin' nephew over for the assist.

Finally hit G2-A (10,000 GP) tonight in SF4.  Now I have to get there again on PS3.  Good night; had some great matches, surprising number of perfects, and one lol-worthy rage quitter.  5,000 more GP to go until G1...

...where everyone else already is!   :lol :'(

How many s.links are there?  I thought there were only 13 in the original?  I probably maxed about 6-7 on my first run.

Mass Effect 2 - just started the second round of recruitment. Going to the planet with a billion things to do. Have unlocked some awesome thing that gives me 2x the Paragon/Renegade points :hyper

P3P - in the last week now. Main char at lv86, have also completed about 86% of the Persona encyclopedia, and now finishing off a couple of ultimate weapons while I level up in Monado. Might try and get my main char to 99. Not sure. I maxed my money counter once, but it's back down to about 7 mil thanks to all the persona fusion I've been doing. Still got shitloads of drops from the gold hands I can sell if I need cash. Maxed 13 of the s.links and probably won't be able to max another before the 31st, though I have two which are lv8/9. My god, there is a blatant phallus-shaped persona later on, isn't there?

Yup, and it's riding a carriage. :lol

NMH2 plays great with a CC Pro.  Buy one of those the second they're out, if you haven't imported one yet.

Been playing the shit out of ME2 like everyone else.  Only drag is probing for minerals.  That shit really sucks and every review really understated how much you have to do it.
