I dunno. I don't remember much of ME1, but what struck me was the horrible simplistic world view in stark contrast with the lovingly wrought game universe. And the questionable design choices. Oh boy.

RANT INC
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I really don't like the "Humans are the only race that gets shit done" part in ME1. It's like the other races suddenly - after thousands of years of evolution and technical advancements - suffer from a collective brain fart that leaves them crippled and terminally stupid. These guys are supposed to have built an interstellar alliance and survived more than two wars that could have easily wiped out all life.

Then a bunch of rabid apes in tin cans show up, fling poop everywhere and die in droves and suddenly everybody's busy jumping into their beds and giving them unprecedented political power, alongside their own tech of course. Basically, in ME1 aliens are either on your team, incredibly interested in looking at your stamp collection, heinously incompetent nincompoops or cannon fodder. Talk about a thinly veiled power trip fantasy.

And don't get me started on some parts of the presentation and plot. So I run some job for a high-level prostitute and in response she rips my clothes off and ravages me like a cheap whore while my crew just stands right behind me and observes us with vacant stares. Not even my love interest takes issue with me boinking a random high-throughput slut right in front of her. And that's about five minutes after you learn that basically every single entity on the entire station either already has tapped that, or plans to ASAP - including the quadrupedal "ALARMED RESPONSE" guys. But suuuure, some just want to talk. Yeah.

Still, some suspension of disbelief goes a long way, and most can swallow the inane inventory system (people have been killed for inflicting lesser grievances upon humanity) and shallow loot system. Personally, it's too shootery for my tastes, I'd have liked a lock-on targeting system like in Metroid Prime. The incessant toggling of the power wheel is getting on my nerves, more so in the even more shootery ME2 than in ME1. It's absolutely necessary, especially at higher difficulty levels, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

I enjoy the fact that it's different from the usual copy-pasted medieval mulch. It's an enjoyable game despite its flaws. The fluff lore is quite expansive, the universe is mostly consistent, and the plot, while not overly ambitious, is presented quite enjoyably.

And then comes ME2 and resurrects the dead, adds an appalling ammo system tacked onto the lore with a 2x4, some chewing gum and a sledgehammer - and not to mention that gathering mechanic, a hundred times worse than the empty procedurally created worlds in ME1. And the plot is also worse, kind of. Still a fun game too; which puzzles me, quite honestly. Oh well. Nobody is perfect.

Wat was I saying... oh yeah, I'm playing Plants vs Zombies at the moment after fucking up my steam cloud save somehow.

The alien races have basically stagnated after centuries of boring intergalactic politics and bureaucracy. Humans are the new kids on the block and don't really understand the subtle nuances of intergalactic politics, so basically just run head-first into every problem with guns blazing. It's sloppy, but does tend to get things done more quickly than in committee.

I think that's more what the story is about, that the aliens have lost that adventurous spirit, whereas human haven't yet. Although, when you get right down to it, even the human politician is a complete dimwit, so there's that too.

As much as I like Japanese games, the stories are pretty crap for the most part. MGS3 is an exception.

I tend to find myself preferring ambitious stories told poorly than generic stories that are well-told... For me, FF7 and Xenogears would beat out something like Mass Effect or most western Star Wars/LOTR/comicbook wannabe plots.

I find stuff like Mass Effect almost as bad as stuff like Final Fantasy. In Final Fantasy, Tidus is a dream. In Mass Effect, Shepard is resurrected.

Both silly and distinguished mentally-challenged.

Look, even if I wasn't in crunch mode w/no gaming for the next week and then at a hotel taking an 18 hour exam for the week after, you're asking me to play RGG over Catherine, MvC3, Tactics Ogre, YS1+2, New Vegas DLC, and the final half of RDR and SRW@3.  Not going to happen! :P

Ok, I'll make a deal.  I'll just skip RGG3/4/Black Leopard and jump right into OF THE END and play with you and Oscar.  Then if I'm like OMG AKIYAMA IS SO COOL, I will play RGG4 afterward :P

I mean 3/17 is kind of good timing since I'll be done with Catherine by then and SRW Z2 isn't out until 4/14.  So I guess I'll jump in.  If there are any cameos/wink^wink references to RGG3/4/BL I will just have to miss them :X

Tidus is a dream? Im never trying to finish FFX now  :'(

Which game has good plot then according to you Himuro?

I thought they told you that in FFX pretty early or at least by midway.

Honestly, Himuro's tastes are wack to me.  Tidus being a dream is actually an original and interesting plot twist you don't see very often in games.  Thumbs up for that.

Forget that.  Wait 2 years for OF ZA ENDO to be localized.  By then I might get around to playing Yakuza 3, and then 4, and then cry about Kenzan and Black Panther Party.

No, it tells you on Mt Gagazet which is almost end game.

And plot twists mean nothing.

Anyways, it's fucking stupid. I prefer FF games stick to simplicity. Why can't he just be a guy transported a 1000 years in the future? Why does he have to be a dream? What is this bullshit metaphysical bullshit?

And for the record, every FF plot gets fucking distinguished mentally-challenged except VI, X and arguably IX. Every game starts out with an amazing premise: teenagers who are trained in a military school to become mercenaries? Hell yes. Ecosystem warfare between a group of terrorists and a company who is hell bent on absorbing the planet's power for their own gain? Fucking HELL YES. But then they bring in this stupid metaphysical bullshit that ruins the story, the plot, AND the characters. Always.

Kosma:

Grim Fandango - A dead afterlife sellsman embarks on a journey to clear his name and find the girl who he mistakenly sent off in the wildneress of the land of the dead.

Silent Hill 2 - A man receives a letter from his presumably dead wife that she's at their special place, and is trapped in a town under the mysterious spell of purgatory.

Chrono Trigger - A rag tag team of awesome characters go from time period to time period -- future, past, and present -- to save the world. I have a weakness for time travel.

Tactics Ogre - After being the victims of a raid on their town, with the death of their parents, our heroes join a revolution strife with politics, racial tension, and morality.

Suikoden II - Two best friends become the leaders of two opposing nations at war.

Others:

Day of the Tentacle
Psychonauts
Out of this World
Snatcher
Planescape: Torment
Vagrant Story
Baldur's Gate 2
Monkey Island 1-3
Beneath a Steel Sky
Shin Megami Tensei 3
Persona 2: Innocent Sin
Persona 3
Persona 4
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Zelda: Majora's Mask
Final Fantasy Tactics (well, half of it anyways)

among others

You should be fine.  You can "get" Akiyama in about two minutes.  He's refreshingly open.  There might be some references to 3/4 you miss out on, but somehow I doubt OF THE END is going to be steeped in series lore.

I didn't want to encourage even more expensive importing and backloggery for Bebpo...  ;)

It does follow after the events of 4, but OF THE END looks like it's 100% non-canon.

I should get Yak 3 to prepare for Yak 4.

You should. I hear it's super cheap now.

yeah, Amazon has it for ~$20

I bought mine for $30 months ago and it's still sealed.  I should really stop doing that.  But unless there is another game coming out in March, Yakuza 3 and potentially 4 will take up my March.  I played 1 and 2 back to back too.

and yeah, Of The End seems to be a random side story.  The big guy from Yakuza 2 is in there, and, well, I hope there isn't a crazy twist and yakuza 3 and 4 about that.

If you have a Kmart anywhere nearby, they're apparently giving Yakuza 3 free with purchase of Yakuza 4.  Other than that, Amazon has it cheap.

Link? Will buy Yak 4 for this.

Deus Ex 3 is out on March 8th - a week before Yakuza 4.

I need to go back and platinum Yakuza 3 before 4 comes out. For some reason I kinda forgot 4 was coming out so soon. I guess it's because we didn't need to bitch at Sega for a year in order to get it localized.

I remember March 8th was a date thrown around for Deus Ex HR before it was delayed into the following fiscal quarter or whatever.  I don't think there is a new date and I'd guess that it's out in April.  Yeah, if that was March 8th, it gets advance treatment over anything else.

Oh, I haven't been following any info on it and saw it on some release lists for March 8th. Weird that no one's updated their dates yet. Actually, I guess it's only the few sites that I usually check that haven't updated their dates :|

Demi whats the best weapon you can easliy get in DR2?

I'm surprised no one's mentioned this, but also at any time you can make two Tenderizers right outside the safe house. Two MMA gloves are in the same gym store as the boxing gloves, and there's a box of nails in the maintenance room and in the room adjacent to that. They do about 70% of the damage the knife gloves do, but are about twice as fast.

EDIT: Also examine the poster to the right exit upon leaving the safe room so you can get the combo card for the Tenderizers.

The best book I've found in the game so far is the one that increases health gained from food by 50%, also right outside the safe house.

Also known as the Brand New ending.

Ill try those gloves thanks Raban, I already have that magazine.

Currently having trouble with Leon on his bike  :maf

What level are you right now? If I were you, skip out on Meet The Contestants and Chuck The Role Model on your first run. Hell, I'd recommend you just skip all psychos until your second run-through unless you feel like restarting the story at around level 10 like I did.

Psycho's are a joke if you plan on taking survivors with you. Outfit them with shotguns and keep a bunch of OJ on you and just avoid the psycho and heal the survivors with the OJ after the fight.

After I started doing that I never had a problem. Then I hit level 30 and I was able to kill all psychos with 3 or 4 Knife Glove hits.

Do survivors really tear it up that well? I never took them into a psycho fight.

The chef took me a while but I eventually finished him off. I think I just had the tenderizers, a couple knife gloves and like six pastas. What a shitty boss fight.

I'm not playing Yak 2 because it requires playing on dirty poor PS2.

Just imagine you are playing a Wii game with better controls.
