Played a bit more of Four Heroes of Light. It really feels like FF3 for babby, I wish the game would trust me enough to make my own decision who to fight/heal... though I don't mind the limited inventory or AP system in battles. The scenario is also really bad - while some old RPGs were pretty light on the plot, usually their subplots were a tad more interesting and unique than what we have here. "Go kill the Sand Devil", "Kill the witch and save the princess!"

Started playing Tomb Raider: Legend. I just beat Japan and then got all the medals in the Croft Manor. Croft Manor is pretty awesome, just platforming and puzzle solving without any of the lame combat.

Your first time? :shh

Legend's ending is a classic, very powerful

Yeah, I've played Anniversary, but I haven't played Legend or Underworld. They were all on sale on Steam a week back, so I'm going to try to play through the trilogy.

Legend is really good; I played the 360 version to 1000/1000, and agree that the ending is very good. Anniversary didn't grab and hold me the same way; I got about halfway through, then walked away. Underworld, I did the intro, but then nothing else. The camera is messed up, makes some jumps crazy-hard which would have been easy in Legend.

I just beat Arkham Asylum. Fun game. I hope there are more upgrades in Arkham City since that's the one carrot that really made me want to rack up combos and get lots of experience.

next one i'm going to pick is actraiser which i also finished a long time ago

oh and for the curious the last game ever released on snes is a remake of a graphical adventure released by HAL called metal sladder glory,it was released in 2000! i thought that by that point everybody jumped on the PSX train but i guess they released the odd snes game?

Dude are you me? (and apparently Raban too  :) )  Thats almost exactly me. Except that I only got pass the T-Rex in Anniversary.

Think I got much further when I was playing it on my Saturn.

Legend is great though, too bad the new tomb raider look so much unchartedized. Hope there still will be real platforming and puzzles.

Been playing some original Feeding Frenzy, which was 200 msp some time ago. It is the antithesis to Dark Souls, in that there is no brainwork, it gets easier as the level progresses, and occasionally Achievements pop.

I'm pretty sure I'm not having nearly as much sex as you are, Lager.

OTOH, Raban and I are both largely unintentionally celibate and have disturbingly parallel tastes in games. I'd go so far as to suggest he too may be a foreigner living in Japan with limited access to reasonably priced new games.  :teehee

One more level to go in Trine, doing my second play of Catherine - getting the "bad" endings, wrapping up the drinking trophies, the 'every day hero' trophy, among others. Then I'll go back and get the "neutral" endings and finish up Rapunzel. Not interested in getting all the Babel stages, since they seem like they'd be BRUTAL just to unlock. I take forever to make it through games. :P

I was about to be super pissed, Legends kept crashing in Kazakhstan during the first part. But I checked the internets, and apparently that's a common crash for people using Vista/Win7 64-bit, and you can get around it by turning off Next Generation Graphics (the hi-res textures, bloom, and stuff they added for the 360 version). Beat that level, and now I'm cruising through England. Game is so awesome, I loved the little ruined King Arthur museum and driving the forklift. Better Shenmue game than Shenmue, and better Uncharted game than Uncharted.

Renegade Ops is pretty rad.  If I have one complaint: too many night-time missions.  The game is beautiful and half the stages are masked in darkness.

After 20 hours its apparent Monster Hunter sucks.  I think I'm just playing for the music that plays during capture/trap quests.

So like where do I begin?  Babysitting a camera is chore as expected, especially as monsters love to rush off screen and then immediately do a rush attack from across the map that does 40% damage.  Or when you're focused on the big baddie and one of his butt buddies blindsides me, and the big bad thing slaughters me during that hitstun.

The subsystems are obtuse and the game's manual doesn't tell enough in that regard.  I just now kinda sorta 'get' the whole resource/commodity/trade management thingy, sorta.  But there's a farm with options upon options and a tiki thing and he wants stuff I don't how to get and he has various options upon options himself.  And the cat chef.  I still can't figure out how to effectively use charms/decorations or what or what does have a slot or how to influence this 'skill tree' I can't seem to find .  And then weapons have affinities but hellifiknow what any one monster is weak to.  And does a negative number mean the element is resisted or susceptible ???

My far least favorite aspect is that weapons can be completely ineffective against boss monsters.  They literally will bounce off their hide 99 percent of the time.  Capcom tried to make it so if your weapon's innate sharpness rating is poor(er) that your option will be a smaller weakpoint thats hard to reliably hit.  The problem is almost all of the canned combos angle in such a way that you won't hit that weak spot but instead the surrounding impervious hitbox- with recoil stun to boot!

There's not even what I would call a difficulty curve here.  Its obtuse, its clunky, and its inconsistent.  Every single weapon class has different fundamental attacking controls for instance, and there's like... 7?

You know what?  I could go on all night about this.  Maybe I should beat Barroth tonight.

are you using the spear emcee? spear let you block attacks instead of dodging which is a lot, lot, lot easier... i found myself sucking at the game a lot less after learning to use the spear

Quote
I still can't figure out how to effectively use charms/decorations or what or what does have a slot or how to influence this 'skill tree' I can't seem to find .

allright it works like this, each piece of your armor comes with a skill and a number... for example the qurupeco helm comes with "Defense +4" that doesn't mean it increase your defense by 4,that means it just gives you 4 point in the defense skill and when you reach a certain threshold that skill activates, for example the defense skill give you a small defense boost when you get to a total of 10,a medium boost at 15 and a large boost at 20

so let's say you wear the whole qurupeco set, that will give you a total of 11 point in the defense skill, well now thanks to decoration you can gem the remaining 4 points and bring it to a total where it triggers medium instead of small and if you are lucky and got a charm with Defense +5 you can bring the total to 20 where it will trigger the large boost

Quote
And then weapons have affinities but hellifiknow what any one monster is weak to.

there is no precise way to know other than checking a guide but it should be pretty obvious for some monster... what do you think is the ice monster weakness? i'll tell you it's not ice

Quote
And does a negative number mean the element is resisted or susceptible

negative means it's susceptible, positive means is resisted but i wouldn't worry too much about it,monster don't really use elemental attack that much

and ehy while it's not exact science, usualy if an armor set is susceptible to an element that means the monster that armor set come from is most of the time susceptible to that element too

Quote
They literally will bounce off their hide 99 percent of the time.

well sharpness matter as you said but where you hit also matter, for example you say you want to try barroth? well hitting barroth in the head will always result in a bounce so your best bet is to hit him on the tail or the body

some attack will never bounce, the spear charge attack for example,or the hammer charge attack,or the longsword special

Quote
Money kinda hard to make atm.

you are not abusing the farm, give them some honey, make some day pass around, get back your 10X 15X free honey, watch your profit grows

the fisherman too, send them to search for treasure and they will return with a lot of high-priced stuff

what weapons are you using right now?

kirby return to dreamland - played up the first 3 world (out of what looks 5,but the number don't really add up so there are probably more) it's okay,i like it more than epic yarn but it's no donkey kong country returns...

the thing that surprised me the most is that they added a shitload of attacks to preceding abilities and most of kirby super star attacks and skill seems to be there, the rock ability get an uppercut, the spark ability gets a charge attack, the fire ability is now the old fire breathing ability + the fireball ability, spike gets a charge attack a-la wheel, the bomb ability let you throws bombs a-la bowling balls

there are also a decent number of new abilities too, there is a water ability that let you walk on water,a whip ability which let you grab enemies and a leaf ability that let you hide in the background

other than that it pretty much plays like the original nes kirby, there is even the same minigame where you slingshot kirby up to the clouds to get extra lives and a lot of the same mini-bosses like bonker

there are only 2 big difference with the original...
1) each level has between 3 and 5 gears hidden (maybe hidden is a too big word since they are put in quite obvious place and so far i haven't missed a single one) which unlock bonus like minigames (there are only 2 though but the second one is pretty fun) fitting room's where you can test power's and challenge level which score you depending on how fast you clear the level and kill everybody using a specific power...

2) in some levels (looks like every 2 level actualy) you'll find a glowing enemy, sucking this enemy give you an incredibly powerfull version of that enemy skill which is usualy powerfull enough to clear the screen, these sequence feature plenty of breakable stuff so your objective is pretty much to break everything,it's kinda like the giant shroom of new super mario bros if it involved more than "GO RIGHT!"

anyway you want to break stuff because behind one of the breakable object you'll find an entrance which lead to a special sub-level,in this level you are chased by a dark wave of sort but the wave it's somewhat slow and so far it has never catched me,finishing this level lead to a sub-boss fight which upon defeat will give you 2 gears, sadly the sub-boss it's always the same

mmm... what else to say, some object are too heavy to sucks so you need to waggle to make kirby suck harder, some attack also require you to waggle,in what looks like the smartest thing nintendo has ever done, you can actualy mash the D-Pad instead of waggling so if you really want you can play the game with no waggling at all

there is 4 player multiplayer but it seems only player 1 gets to play as kirby, the other 3 players get to play as king dedede, meta knight and a waddle dee and as such they can't get any ability, seems like a stupid oversight if you ask me,oh also if player 1 dies it's back to the closest checkpoint but the other 3 player can die as much as they want, the minigame are also playable in multi

the worst thing i can say about it... well it's really really easy,i died a great total of once and i actualy feel ashamed for that single death, meanwhile extra lives and health pickup are given like candy...  the level also might drag a little... each world has only 4 levels and a boss so to compensate the level are quite long

watching the giantbomb quicklook it seemed like it was basically a remake of the NES game with stuff added and the levels changed up a little. Specifically I remember hi-jump was introduced in the same way way back when, so I assume most of the rest of the game is lifted in some fashion from the old game. Haven't played a traditional kirby game since the NES one so it's all good. it seems to diddle my nostalgia spot nicely.

Still stuck on Barroth in Monster Hunter 3.  The only weapon I have with green sharpness is a Great Sword and the swing recovery's length makes it hard to get more than one slash at a time without taking a hit.  Maybe I'll try Switchaxe next.

Wasn't there a remake of the NES Kirby for GBA already? I was kinda hoping this would be an all new original Kirby game, but I guess that's what Epic Yarn and Massive Attack are for.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West: Have started ch. 4 an ironic four times so far. Run out of time to finish each time. The cutscenes were charming until I realized they're unskippable.

Still pretty though.

uh... it is a new original kirby game,it just plays like the nes one

Still stuck on Barroth in Monster Hunter 3.  The only weapon I have with green sharpness is a Great Sword and the swing recovery's length makes it hard to get more than one slash at a time without taking a hit.  Maybe I'll try Switchaxe next.

are you eating before heading out? it can double your health energy bar,are you crafting max health potion by combining your normal potion with honey? heck is any of the stuff i'm suggesting being taken in consideration at all? :maf

No shit sherlock.  I know how to max stamina and make mega potions and I need to paintball shit to track it etc etc.  But the only weapon I have that can cut Barroth is so slow I can't hit him while he is in rage mode.  And he rages ALOT.

watching the giantbomb quicklook it seemed like it was basically a remake of the NES game with stuff added and the levels changed up a little. Specifically I remember hi-jump was introduced in the same way way back when, so I assume most of the rest of the game is lifted in some fashion from the old game. Haven't played a traditional kirby game since the NES one so it's all good. it seems to diddle my nostalgia spot nicely.

Wasn't there a remake of the NES Kirby for GBA already? I was kinda hoping this would be an all new original Kirby game, but I guess that's what Epic Yarn and Massive Attack are for.

wiki seems to say so. even had multiplayer with different colored kirbies and meta knight as a playable character. never played that tho.

if you are still running out of health supplies, you could make an healing flute which is done with a flute and a lifepowder, but it's really more of a multiplayer item, actualy wait... the lifepowder itself is a pretty good healing item, you could use that

        Item 1        Item 2               Result
55    Godbug    Wyvern Fang    Lifecrystal
56    Lifecrystal    Wyvern Claw    Lifepowder

i still think you should stick to a lance and take advantage of it's parry function, even if you don't have any sharp lance, sure the big sword let you parry too,but when you parry with the lance you don't stagger like when you do with the big sword... the lance attack are also all focused since you are just poking the monster,so you don't risk taking a big swing and hit somewhere where it will bounce off

the barroth elemental weakness change depending if he has rolled up in the mud or not, when he's rolled up in the mud he's weak to water and when's he's not he's weak to fire,so you could try bringing a weapon made out of royal luddoth or qurupeco piece's

you could try making some progress playing online multiplayer (which is where all the fun is if you ask me) and then return to single player

Daytona USA is STILL the best racing game of all time. The precision, the skill, the timing, the track design, it's still the best. The new extras are amazing on their own too. I've completed beginner and advanced, and my skills aren't what they used to be, especially if a drift is involved, so I'm in challenge mode practicing my skills before I feel comfortable taking on the ELITE EXPERT course. After that, I'm gonna switch to Manual.

Daytona was always the only racing game where I had fun playing manual.

Going back to Mushi Futari 1.5 Maniac now that I'm done with Dark Souls. I'm going to aim for the western record (EOJ's 640m), but I'm not sure if I can top that. Gonna have to work on my stages 3 and 4 strategies a lot to stand a chance.

I'd kill to see Clover-TAC's 1 billion 1.5 Maniac run. I can't even begin to imagine the crazy shit he pulled off to hit that.

Wii is packed up right now- not sure if im going to unpack it or just give it away to some childrens place; never play it anymore; for some reason firing up the Wii feels like 'a lot more work' than the ps3 or 360; a 1st world problem hassle

This weekend I'm gonna try my hand at Vanquish, picked it up for $20 the other day. And some Catherine (trying to get all the endings, the "Everyday Hero" trophy, the drink trivia trophies, and then beat Rapunzel), fighting some Colossi in the remake, catassing a 2nd replay of Ico, and finally beating the last level of Trine. 3 day weekend, and weather is kinda crappy, so we'll see how much I get done.

How are you liking BOF4, MAF? I haven't played that one yet, but it'll be hard to live up to 3, with you getting to fight a dolphin :rock

Im liking it ok, im not SUPER far in- it was my go-to game during my airplane flights last weekend. I dont quite understand the master/pupil skill stuff yet and some of the town quests are dumb- HATED the quest where you had to catch some kid, and then do hide n seek with a bunch of kids. I hate precocious kids in my games.

The skill stuff isnt essential early on im sure so ive done ok in fights- but I need to figure out wtf is going on there stat.

Made it to Disc 2 in Final Fantasy XIII at 7.5 hours, made it to the 8 hour mark before stopping. Lightning :heartbeat

Also picked up Dissidia Duodecim Prologus on PSP (that $3 demo version of Dissidia 2). S-E is genius for putting this out. $3 is about all I want to spend on Final Fantasy fanwank, and the prologue comes with enough content to satisfy my needs.

After spending lots of time in trianing mode in Futari Maniac, I can finally get a theoretical max of 688 million, before reaching the final boss. Now I just need to string together a perfect run, and I'm all set.

Wait, you tried to actually try to argue with me that Final Fantasy XIII is one of the best Final Fantasy's with only 7 hours on the clock. :wtf
