Did you play Oblivion or Fallout 3??

Bethesda couldn't make a good game if it fell on them from the sky.

Too bad they don't hire Obsidian to fix their Elder Scroll games, like they fixed Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 is a hollow experience of Fallout, dumbed down for J6P.  Just like how Oblivion (and likely Skyrim) is a dumbed down shallow fantasy wrpg.

Bethesda games are so bad from a gameplay, writing, graphics perspective.  But somehow they hit that Call of Duty appease the mainstream audience spot, though I'm not really sure how.  I guess people just like big open sandboxes where they can do anything and will look past all the flaws because of it.

Also I'm not posting in the Skyrim thread, so you guys can all fap to it in there as much as you like and I won't judge you all.

That's New Vegas, which actually tries to balance the weapons and mods and skills to make different builds actually FEEL different.  NV also adds meaningful dialogue choices, multiple ways to handle quests, and a world where your actions carry influence beyond just the guy standing at the end of your iron sights.  NV even made run n' gun not shit with iron sights.

Fallout 3 is totally binary in GOOD/BAD choices, the combat is awful and requires no strategy or thought, the characters suck, the locations are dull, and the story is awful.  Go play Fallout 1/2 and then F3 again and try not to feel sick from what a bastardization of the originals it is.  In Fallout 1/2 you had to actually have STRATEGY to get through the game, and every build type gave a totally different gameplay experience because there were just so many different ways to approach the next situation.  It also had sharp dialogue, great locations and characters.  Bethesda Fallout 3 was just Oblivion with a Fallout skin and guns.  Their DLCs were even worse.  Operation Anchorage was wow in a very, very bad way.

Fallout 3 had a lot of great scenarios. ??? This coming from an Obsidian fan is hilarious. Obsidian sucks.

Obsidian is the best wrpg dev still alive.  Alpha Protocol >>>>>>>> anything Bethesda has ever done.

To say that Fallout 3's combat required no strategy or thought is flat out wrong. I dare you to go to the mall and say that you can power through the mutant army. In the original F3 thread, we were exchanging strategies on how to get to Three Dog's station due to all the mutants and we all had different play styles. People like Tiesto or Triumph powered through, whereas I played as a stealth character and mostly snuck through the mutant army. It was much tougher at the beginning, that's for sure. FO3 also has more than good/bad choices, many of the choices carry weight as well. Destroy Megaton and try to convince me that there are zero story or gameplay ramifications. The locations are no more or less dull than we got in New Vegas.

I've played F1/2 and loved 3.

Fallout 3 owned. Eat it.

I will say that I liked New Vegas more than I liked Fallout 3, but it's very close [like, inches].

Obisidian gets points for trying to do interesting things and retaining RPG systems in their games, but their reach too often exceeds their grasp.

Obsidian is the only rpg developer making the equivalent of the wrpgs from the 80s and 90s.  Everyone else is making this new "modern wrpg", which is a joke.  Bioware is sort of in-between though.  Their rpgs are a mix of classic wrpg and modern wrpg.  It's why I still enjoy their games.  The euro guys make wrpgs with a classic wrpg feel but their games are janky as fuck.  Still enjoy those too.  Obsidian just makes the most complete modern interpretation of the 90s wrpg, which makes sense since they are entirely staffed by the people who MADE all the definitive 90s wrpgs.

They have flaws, like every rpg in the last decade, but what they do right (AP - dialogue branching, characters, applying wrpg gameplay to stealth action genre; NV - reputation that sticks with you and changes scenarios, dialogue branching, characters, world building) is done so well that the flaws are all just minor "ok, this is annoying" 2 seconds of time here and there in the 20-100 hours of excellent rpg gameplay.

Obsidian games are about role-playing, something that was highly prevalent as the electronic rpg genre formed, but has been streamlined and dying a quick death over the last decade.

Otoh, I'll never understand how people love modern Bethesda games.  I buy them and play them and I have to drag myself through them after the initial 2-5 hour "wow, look how far I can walk" phase has worn off and the fact there is very little gameplay depth in the combat and questing, and the dialogue is terrible starts showing through.  I would say they are the Level 5 rpgs of the west, but L5 survives on good looking games with shallow awful gameplay & story that sell extremely well to the mainstream masses, however Bethesda games aren't exactly "good looking".

ive played nv for 50+ hours and have yet to see these interesting characters or good dialogue

i liked 3 because i like exploring giant worlds.  i enjoyed the gameplay because i played on very hard and it took a lot of effort to chip away at enemies health, which made survival pretty tough and forced you to constantly balance risk/reward in yr head.  the characters were boring there were real differences in how you could handle quests and yes, they did have real effects in the rest of the gameworld.  also, while too many of the indoor levels were repetitive, the outside areas were PHENOMINAL.  they looked awesome and there were lots of great enemies set up around the map.  some of my favorite parts of the game were huge battles that had nothing to do with quests.   i'm thinking of stuff like a super mutant ambush that occurs near a huge crater downtown, or a battle between a giant super mutant & his backup vs a group of militiamen.  SO EPIC

nv on the other hand feels so much more scaled back.  the combat feels largely the same, but you dont run in to awesome battles anywhere near as much.  the world map is linear, and while you can find unique out-of-the-way areas, there isnt shit to do at them.  the quests are usually simpler and require WAY too much backtracking and not enough shooty time.  the dialog is just as stiff and tedious.

both games are very flawed, but ill take fo3's desolate, hopeless wasteland over nv's shallow world & quests any day of the week

Because in Bethesda you can
Slash, slash, slash
Shoot magic/guns (usually while slashing with magic)
Pick a lock

Those are your three builds.  There is as much role-playing as there is in something like Mass Effect.  Maybe less since ME has better dialogue choices.

For instance with NV, Obsidian added REAL working stealth builds, dialogue builds! and teammate builds (where you are geared toward letting your companion carry and fight).

Except that in Bethesda games there are people who seemingly ignore the story and just make up their own story, role-playing as thieves, stealing by day and night and ignoring everything else and the game allows this.

I like all three too.

But Bebpo saying you can't roleplay in a Bethesda game is 100% bullshit and prove of his lack of time with them. It's like saying "D&D only has three types of builds: strength builds, magic builds and lock picking builds" which is a completely distinguished mentally-challenged statement.

He talks about team builds and shit, as if it even matters, because in Bethesda games, you can forget the story and make your own. That is the prime definition of role playing in an rpg.

I crafted a water sword in MonHunTri and I'm starting to like it better.  It wrecks shit against Great Jaggi/Qurupeco/Barroth.  Unfortuneatly crafting armor sets is still to costly on resources and funds and its stifling as far as experimentation goes.  Especially when you're going after what amounts to the mmo-esque random drops.  I need 10 baggi hides to craft a new weapon and the game is incredibly stingy./

Wrapped up Case Zero, am moving directly to Case West. Just barely started this morning, but I'm playing with a save-file from ONLY playing the final boss with Sceneman. As such, Chuck is not at 5HP and 3 inventory slots, but is rather a brutal, powered-up madman! :rock

Frank and Chuck don't get along well. I like that. It's also NOT A MALL again, so that's good. Other than that, is there anything better than more Dead Rising?

I'm just trying to play stuff which will leave me free to play SAINTS ROW 3!!!!

Really?  That's my favorite part of the DLCs.  Might just be nostalgia talking though (since Fallout 1/2 had those style endings).
