I should really be playing Divinity: Original Sin right now.

I backed it for $60 and it supposedly turned out really well.

Just can't find the time and I have Watch_Dogs too.......

Dark Souls

God I hate that boss fight so much. Got invaded once, died. Waste of humanity. Thanks asshole. So I tried to take it out without summoning or using resin. I started to get their pattern down once the other comes out. It's mostly about dodging the fire, which is usually easy. But then I got too cramped, was locked on, couldn't see, and fell off the roof.

I'm not liking this build or class. I've pumped 21 into dex to focus on weapon atk and I can't use a claymore or the weapons I actually like because apparently my strength stat is shit, and despite the high dex stat, my character does shit damage.

Going to restart and play Warrior. Hunter is a trash class I'm finding. Oh well, only losing two hours of gameplay.

Make sure you're paying attention to the stat scalability of the weapon you're using. Pumping points into DEX will bump your attack damage up but only to a point. The Claymore scales with Strength so if you like using that, pick a class with higher base strength.

The icons with the letters on the left side of the weapons stat page show the scalability. Weapons with an A for Strength will mean you get more damage outta it when you upgrade strength, and it will continue to do so for longer.

All sorts of fancy swords go for dex. Estoc, rapier, etc. Spears (and maybe halberds?) also scale dex I think. You can find a winged spear in the graveyard at the start of the game.

Okay. I keep thinking the graveyard at the beginning is for later levels due to how much effort it takes to kill the skeletons. I'll back track there and give it a shot.

It's not so much that the graveyard is for later-game for stat reasons, but it's more particular with what weapons work best there. skeletons are strong against slashing/weak against blunt, the area following the graveyard is easier with holy weapons, and so on.

stamina is endurance, I think.

oh by the way, how's the pc version? i'm playing the ps3 version and in one of the table,i shoot the ball so hard, it clipped through the table and went into the stratosphere :lol

does stuff like that happen on the steam version too? i'm not really too happy with the plunger either,it feels like a lot of time i pull it to full and then it throws the ball with less strenght than it should (though in this case it might be my joypad fault)

Biggest strength: gigantic landscape with near endless racing possibilities. Some races even have tornados throw shit on the track. They're scripted, but it's still pretty exciting to dodge wrecks and trees.
Biggest weakness: the track design can be so dumb that you can easily slide off a cliff or past the checkpoints or not have enough grip or power to scale a steep section while the AI seems to fly past you.

also played some legend of heroes 2 and what the fuck is this game? I heard it had a lot of text; wasn't prepared for it all to be about inconsequential bullshit. 30 min for a story about your friend getting lost in the crowd? 90 min for a trip across the sea on a boat?? this is boring as shit and I'm gonna give up on it soon if it doesn't pick up.

Decided to try out some of the PS1 games I had sitting around on my PSN account for a while now.

Dino Crisis 2 - seemed pretty shitty. I thought it would be RE with dinosaurs but instead it's this really awkward action game with constantly re-spawning enemies and a bunch of tiny, repetitive looking areas. There is some kind of combo/scoring system in the game that involves killing dinos within a certain amount of time to increase your score... or something. The game just completely failed to captivate me.

Vagrant Story:rejoice I spent 4 hours in the first dungeon alone. I love me some dungeon crawlers and this is one of the most immersive and addictive I have played in a while. Going to be playing this and no other games until I beat it.

Dragon Quest VII 3DS

I'm putting everything else on-hold to try to finish this off because it's lengthier than I had anticipated it being.  I got through the intro faster because: a) I played a fraction of the PSX version before moving onto the 3DS version, and b) they cut out the intro dungeon.  There are a few things like NPCs and story segments at the beginning that are a bit different to facilitate moving through the introduction faster because I suppose players had issues with it in the original version.  Though I do miss the intro dungeon, but I feel like this version would be more palatable for people trying to get into the game for the first time.  At least, that's kind of how I feel right now, since the scene direction is so much better and the ugly CG bits like the dance scene in the PSX version are gone.  I guess the only jarring thing is that all of the models smile even if they're saying something sad or if they're angry (ex: Linda and Pepe smile in the Verdham segment of the game; smiling as she's busy yelling at him).

The animations are still really good, but that's expected from a DQ game.  This is also my first time through DQ7, and I'm admiring the story/vignettes a lot.  It's a very emotional game, even moreso than DQ5.  I hope I finish it soon.

Edit: Oh, and the introduction of on-screen enemies instead of random battles ended up being a bad idea instead of a good idea.  Enemies spawn more often than the PSX version, and it's difficult to avoid the on-screen enemies since the caverns/corridors can be so narrow.  So you end up fighting anyway.  It's an easy way accruing money, but I feel like they capped some areas in terms of XP.

Me too.  I find it really refreshing considering the subject matter of a lot of RPGs released lately, or RPGs I've played lately.  Even if it's an older RPG in terms of when it was written and developed, it's still new to me, and it's reminding me of why I started playing games in the first place.  It's similar to the effect that SMT4 had.

iirc, you liked the intro dungeon's puzzles, right?  That was removed to get to the rest of the game faster.   I do find it a little regrettable because I liked that dungeon, but I guess it was done to get people into the game faster.  Finding shards is easier this time around because there’s a shard radar on the bottom screen and the shard itself shows up on the map on the bottom screen.  There was one point where I didn’t realize I had forgotten a shard but it was easy to go back and look for it because of the radar alone.

If you put the game down for a while like I did, there’s a journal of your adventures in the menu that recounts everything that’s happened so far, or everything that’s happened recently.  In addition, in the menu, there’s a “next shard” option that will tell you if you can get a shard in any of the areas that you have access to.  There’s also a shard list that tells you where you got each shard you have.  There may not be party chat during bosses (the talk option was removed), but there’s more party chat outside of battles.

The remake has orchestrated music this time around, which I feel adds to the new scene direction and camera angles during scenes.  Battles also feel really fast since you don’t have to make time to watch slow animations.

The World Map can still be disorienting even if you select the second camera option (which automatically moves the camera up if it hits a boundary or allows the player to see the moving characters even if they're behind a tree, etc).  It's mostly because sometimes you can't see the enemies pop up around you sometimes.  Keeping the camera default on the World Map isn't a good idea since boundaries and structures get in your way when you're exiting a town, which can be disorienting if you're not constantly moving it with L/R.

The Monster Park is available much earlier than it is in the PSX version, and thus you can get monster hearts much much earlier than before.  Additionally, when you get to the Immigrant Town, Tia (the girl who replaces the old man there in this version) sends you to find townspeople who want to be monsters (this is useful for this).  You get a shard when they join, and you can put these shards on a pedestal in the basement in the town.  You can complete monster shard dungeons this way (with treasures and a boss, and you can redo these dungeons but you won’t get the first reward again).  The shard dungeons themselves have like one enemy type, and then a big version of that enemy at the end. I haven’t played around with the Internet Tavern yet.

About classes, since I didn’t get too far into class progression in the PSX version before dropping it in favour of playing this version, I guess my impressions might not be as in-depth as people would like.  Plus I haven’t played around with them enough.  But while skills can’t carry over through class changes, the advanced classes get way more of a spread of skills than before.  It has no hybrid skills, but those skills are basically moved to other human/monster classes instead.  Jobs also seem to level up faster.

I guess some of my issues are more for the beginning of the game.  The Dialac part was changed and that was something I disliked a lot since you miss some story stuff that was in the PSX version.  It just cuts to the chase for the main NPC for that town instead of expanding.  But outside of that, it seems pretty good with respect to retaining content.

So far, I think it’s balanced despite the changes.  But Dragon Quest games are usually balanced.  I don't mind the pacing as much, either, since I realize that the game is trying to do some worldbuilding.  Slowly, but surely, it's doing some genuine worldbuilding.

Going through this makes me want to go through some of the other DQ games again.  I have the SFC versions of 5 and 6.  I've played through 5 SFC, but I haven't played through 6 SFC.  I'd like to give the 1-3 SFC a shot again since I've only played them once.   I suspect that if I did go through the series in its entirety, I wouldn’t have as lofty an impression of DQ8 as I once did (especially since it has been years since I’ve played DQ8).

Maybe it's because I've gone through so many Tales, Persona, SMT, and Final Fantasy games in the past few years that I want to revisit Phantasy Star (which I didn't get to do as much for its 25th anniversary), Ultima, and Dragon Quest.  Doing a series playthrough would take a while, though, since I have other things on the table for now.

DQ7 was a game I'd put down regularly because it was so fucking long, and when I picked it back up had no idea where I was or what I was doing. I often beat DQ's fairly fast, but not DQ7. So I'd have problem with remembering where the next shard is, or forgetting my place in the story. It'd become a pretty big problem. I don't remember much about the intro dungeon, Speedstats. The simplification and more accessible nature sound like they propel the game even further. DQ7 always felt like a game hampered by its scope due to being on the psx. And it seems that the remake has fixed about every issue I had with the title. Can't wait to import.

Not sure about cutting story, but it could be for the best in some cases.

when i went thru it, i would play one story a week each sunday. was like 5-10 hours of gameplay, and it made it easy to keep from losing my place or getting burnt out. game was awesome that way because there's like 30 stories in it so it kept me entertained for a good long time.

for some reason tho i stopped when i got to the last level, and never finished the game.

I played Strange Journey like that. About a floor a week. Haven't touched it in a while though.

PS: Big Jumbo?

Ultra SF4: Did well tonight in a GAF lobby.  Highlight was taking out the best guy in the room's Seth with Decapre and scoring a perfect in the second round of that match, then winning against him again when I picked Hugo and he went with Evil Ryu.

Abyss Odyssey: Runs like shit on my PC, which is hilarious since I'm running much more complex games at 1920x1080P on high/ultra settings, 60+ FPS, and all that good stuff.  Tried dropping the resolution down and the game crashed.  Done for the night.

Shantae Risky's Revenge: Looks like shit on PC-- this is game that needs some kind of sprite filtering added badly.  It's a pixelated mess when blown up on a larger screen.  What were they thinking?
