Battle Princess of Arcadia

so yeah another N1 game came out and it was finaly time to give it a spin...

...

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, i'm unimpressed, there is no plot, the character are all unfunny anime stereotype (well except the goose king) who keep flashing their anime stereotype at every occasion (it has not one but two pervert character! but don't worry, one of them is a lesbian! yay for gender equality!) the action is clunky and difficulty spikes that you have to overcome with grinding are plenty

the game is divided into 3 parts, battles, skirmish and raid...

- battles are your standard side scrolling action, you have a 4 hit combo and several other moves like a dashing attack,a launcher to launch enemies into air for air combo's, and you can tag between 3 different character who all have their own move sets, unfortunately monster selection is small and you are going to see the same birds and panda's a lot though new monster like scorpions or poisoned cactus do get introduced once in a while, the stages are small and it's pretty easy going through them just by spamming your normal combo over and over... next!

- next we have... skirmish! in skirmish each character has an army associated to their weapon (so the princess who uses a sword has a swordswomen army, the mage has a mage army and so on) and instead of character duking out, the armies do in the background while you fight enemy commander's so that there is some actual action going on, this is stupid for a number of reasons...

1) the armies have their own level, to raise an army level you have to pay money, LOTS of money
2) there is a rock/paper/scissor system in it but since there are 8 different kind of armies it's more like the variant with spock and the lizard that nobody understand

these two element together kinda promote you to grind so that you can 1) get enough money to level up the army properly and 2) get an army strong enough to ignore the dumb system in the first place, another really dumb thing in skirmish is that you can issue order, but issuing order seems to barely make any difference and the orders are issued with your super attack bar (which increase the more enemy commander you defeat) if the order seems to barely do anything why i would consume my precious bar when using a special attack instead does actualy something?

- lastly we have... raids! raids are your character and your army together against a giant boss, it's nice beating on a giant monster but once again the game screws up on several aspect, the boss has a shield around him which you have to break by hitting him over and over, the boss don't stagger so half of the time you get hit while trying to hit the boss yourself, once the shield break you have pretty much like 10 seconds to deal any sort of damage after which the shield goes back up again and has to be broken again which is annoying! a lot!

in the meanwhile the boss does slow but sweeping attack, if they hit you they usualy take a lot of your health bar but they are easy to dodge (unless of course you get hit in mid-attack) since all you need to do is usualy get behind the boss but depending on your level it's totaly possible to die in 2 hits, which adds to the aggravation, even if you are leveled enough, these attack will usualy kill some of your army, if your whole army dies you get a game over so when your army is running low on soldiers you have to retreat and let your army regroup which usualy leads to you waiting into a corner blocking while the army recharge

and it totaly breaks the momentum of the game! it's like if you were playing street fighter and suddenly ryu was like "wait wait wait! i have to catch my breath" and the whole fight stopped for around half a minute for no reason, oh by the way like skirmish these encounter too feature a super bar which you can use for useless command that won't do much for your army or a special attack that actualy does something

so basicaly the actual action segments (which would be the battle segment) are fine if cheaply done, however when you add the skirmish and raids segment you get something that is complicated for the sake of being complicated, grindy, and put roadblocks on the player way just because! and your prize for doing all this? more boring dialogue about the bubbly hyperactive princess being the bubbly hyperactive princess, the pervert being the pervert, and the old man being the old man

tl;dr N1 got square-enixed

This 5ever:

Sega got DDoS'ed and cut off access for non JPs in response in a weird convoluted fashion (a few ISPs can still get in, it's explained on the DSL reports forum if you REALLY care, which you don't) so most of us have to VPN in now. I'm gonna need an esthe pass to fix this poor girl's face, couldn't really tell how it worked prior to getting the outfit and hair.

I've always been bitter towards the PSO series due to being such a huge fan of the original games and not liking the new direction...

but then I saw this and I'm desperate to give PSO2 a try:

Oh boy, production values are great. But there was a guy pooping inside a drum. Why?

Controls are very bad. Nothing feels intuitive at all, like its stuck in 2004.

kojipro's recent development history

MGS1 -> MGS2 -> MGS3 -> MGS4 -> MGPW -> MGS5 DEMO

i'm not sure why you expected step 4 in that chain to be any different from step 3 or 2 or even 1 mechanically.  it's not like they're doing anything else where they might pick up tips or new ideas.

The gameplay portion of mgs4 is actually full of new ideas. You sneak through a battlefield with active soldiers. It's a change that changed the fundamental gameplay. Shame the whole game isn't that.

Already traded it in, no time for yank!

An action stealth game needs good controls. Period!

It seems Oscar is right because this didnt feel much more fluid them MGS 1, like the running and "jumping" felt straight out of the psx days.

Shame about those awesome production values

I'm playing World of Tanks: Wait Forever for the System Update to Conclude. The first 20 minutes of it seem same-oh same-oh, but I'm hoping the 2nd half of the loading bar introduces new waiting gameplay and plot twists. Like a sudden surge toward 100% complete! That'd be great!

I played about 4 hours of MonHun iOS Freedom Unite so far. It's on my iPhone, and I REALLY want it to use cloud storage so I can play on my iPad.

I played a bit of GTA5 last night, for the first time... didn't get very far since I just wanted to fuck around in the game and check out the radio stations, but the game forced me into doing all these missions where, if I deviated from the route at all, game over. It was getting late so I didn't get to the part where I can do any sort of free-roaming. Game definitely looks much better than 4 and controls better.

Nearing the end of Wild Arms XF (after what seems like forever... one of the longest SRPGs ever), and up to the final stage of Shovel Knight. Really impressed with Shovel Knight, such a great game with lots of whimsy (the troupple dance!), excellent art, level design, and music... although I wish death was a tad more punishing.

No one calls you to do shit because it's not gtaiv. Unlock all three characters and then fuck around the map with races and other activities. Create your own fun by exploring and try to go to the top of mount chiliad. Try to fill out the whole map. Whatever. There's lot to do in gtav.

I was curious about what my RPG backlog looked like when I saw this GAF thread, then decided to post mine.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=121873981&postcount=144

Let's just say that even if gaming completely dried up tomorrow I'd still have enough to last me a lifetime.

And of course, the thread was for Japanese RPGs. If I added western RPGs the list would undoubtedly quadruple.

Nocturne is definitely a must-play. Though I'm a tad burnt out on SMT since I went through Persona 3, 4, DDS2 and Soul Hackers rather recently, but Nocturne may very well be my Christmas vacation game... For now I'm gonna finish up the Suikoden and Wild Arms series, maybe delving into Dragon Force or some of the Growlansers.

And then next year I wanna head back home to the west, and catass the entire Ultima series.

Battle Princess of Arcadias

somehow i managed to finish this, i really don't have anything to add to what i said before, it's a bad game and i'm guilty of playing this to the end simply because i like colorfull japanese sidescrollers which is pretty much the only positive thing i can say about it

it's funny that i called the game grindy because somewhere along the road i became so strong that i literaly became invincible, the game became a complete walk in the park, which coupled with the fact that no new enemy or situation get introduced, made it literaly the most mindless game i've played in a while, just put your brain on auto-pilot and mash away!

so much of the plot gets wasted on nothing, the party goes out to investigate only to find out nothing, this happens for almost the whole game and i have no idea how they tought this shit could fly off, there was one detail that i tought was nice when stuff finaly happens...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
it turns out that there isn't really a fantasy world, what happened is that evil aliens called ruinaria destroyed the real world so human made the current world (how is not actualy explained because... details!) to escape from the aliens and fight them, and the bubbly princess is actualy an anti-alien robot

so while the game looks like a fantasy on the surface it's actualy supposed to be a post-apocalyptic futuristic game, of course not that it really matters since the ruinaria shows up exactly just in time for the game to have an ending after several hours of nothing
[close]

after finishing the game you unlock an optional dungeon... which uses the same monsters and graphics from the normal game, which were already reused to the extreme in the actual game, what were they thinking? :snoop

Comparing sr4 to gtav, honestly, is pretty fucking stupid. They're completely different games going for completely different things. At that point you may as well compare chrono trigger to mass effect by virtue of being RPGs. It's silly.

Also I wouldn't say sr4 had excitement cover to cover. More like filler cover to cover.

Whatever character you are, use START to bring up the menu, A-Button to drop into the map, and then move the cursor over any letter on the map. Those are missions. You play as Franklin, then Michael, and last as Trevor.  Once you've unlocked them, you can hold "down" on D-Pad to bring up the character selection UI.

I don't remember if the game has a tutorial on using the full Menu Map, so don't feel bad about not getting it. As much fun as GTA V is, there is A LOT OF FUCKING USER INTERFACE CRUFT coating every aspect of its UI.

My favorite element of this is:
  • Shooting while on-foot is RT; weapon selection is LB, then select from Weapon Wheel
  • Shooting from a car is LB; weapon selection is X-Button to cycle through your entire list of available weapons -- legacy bullshit from GTA IV

having worked a bit at MS in both general purpose app and game teams, and mostly on UI, it's kind of astounding to me how much bespoke UI work goes into games - it sometimes almost feels like every big game has its own bespoke Windows/Office written for it.

played some of that Plague, Inc game which is basically that flash game everyone played years ago that spawned the Madagascar meme where they shut down their ports at the first reports of someone halfway across the world coughing.

It's a cool little thing. Seems fleshed out compared to the original. pretty fun.

it has Planet of the Apes content in it now. you evolve the Simian Flu and it also has mechanics with intelligent apes that can migrate across the world.

That good? Can you throw out a quick opinion on why you like it?

I could always google a description I suppose but I like reading Bore opinions. :-*

It's a turn-based JRPG. It reminds me of something I would've played on the PS2 or DC. Huge world, great designs. Total OG weeaboo shit, none of that waifu uguu moe moe shit.

FFXIII, everyone hates it but it's been good times for me so far  :yeshrug

Are you actually playing it, or just listening to the soundtrack?

playing, although I admit that I tend to sort of think of the game as an accompaniment to the soundtrack rather than the other way around
