I spent almost 2hrs on COD4's Control Room level on Veteran. Holy fuck is it brutal. I've done almost all the rest of the game on Veteran but this one just fucking has my number. Aargh!

Fun though :)

I was working on that bit last night. "All in" was surprisingly easy, but the lack of proper checkpoints during the countdown really fucks everything up.  :punch

Countdown is the underground bunker get to the control room level right? If so, there are checkpoints, but they don't take affect unless you reach them by a certain time.

Lotta SF4 last night.  Did a lot better than the past couples days where I was eating jackassy psychic dragon punches and random/wake-up Ultras left and right.  They were still doing them, of course, but I was more on-point with drawing them out and punishing.

Speaking of which, I'm gonna vent a little because I'm still kind of annoyed with my online experience the past few days; what is the deal with people playing so ridiculously unsafe?  Is it just because I'm playing Dictator and can't return massive amounts of damage so they think the risk/reward is beneficial?  I doubt that much thought goes into it.  Ken/Ryu/Sagat players, even the decent ones, dragon punch non-stop regardless of how many times you punish them for doing it.  Blanka players random Ultra as soon as they get it like fucking clockwork, even if isn't a make or break move for them.  Boxers try to headbutt EVERYTHING.  And some of these people are nearly G1?  Sad.

The other thing that makes me scratch my head is how many people play runaway.  A few characters do really well with runaway: Claw, Seth, Akuma... but why are you playing Zangief or Rufus if you're just gonna fucking jump back the entire time?  It seems like every other person plays runaway regardless of who they're using.  I can't say I mind it all that much since they're just cornering themselves without making me do any work, but chasing after people all the time gets old.

I need to stop playing Championship.

Haven't played any rpgs in ages and now 3 come along at once.

I've got Tales of Vesperia on the way plus just brought Dragon Age and The Witcher: EE on steam.

I'm thinking of taking up Dictator now.  Been using him a little over the past few weeks, and it's pretty fun owning shoto-scrubs with endless headstomps.  Wish I was better with my timing, because Chun's Ultra can hit Blanka out of his when done at the right moment.

There are so many lame players with high rankings.  It's weird, and it wasn't like that for a couple months after Championship mode was released.

FIFA 10 is fucking awesome. I only get sports games once every 2-3 years, and this is head and shoulders above FIFA 08 (which really didn't do all that much for me). And pretty much everything else as well.

If anyone is into soccer/footy, it's really, really good.

duckroll has convinced me that SMT Strange Journey is more fun to play than anything else atm, so that's what I'm mainly playing in free time lately.  There are like 8000 demons this time :D  Then in spurts trying all these new games (omg SO MANY GAMES; best fall EVER!?!?!?) and slowwwwwly still going through ODST.  Might actually finish that soon!  I gotta say each time I sit down and play a little I enjoy it very much.  Halo gameplay is so, so much better than any other FPS these days.

This is the most fucked up SMT yet.  You can get away with so much more when your graphics are so bad you have to use text to describe events.  Game is very Barker horror.  Would be cool if they did something like this for SMT4 with glorious HD.  But I doubt they could get away with it in politically correct Japan.

I feel like this is going to be a loooooong game.  Just hit lvl.16 and the 10 hour mark. So many new demon designs by Kaneko; in a lot of ways this is SMT4.

I honestly think most people online using Blanka only do so so they can use turbo and abuse electricity -- there's no way I'm going to believe that Blanka players who are THAT bad can piano electricity THAT well.  It just doesn't seem realistic.

:lol  I know what you mean.  It's easy enough for me to just kick them out of electricity though.  Gotta be careful on the flip-kicks.  Most Blanka players suck balls anyway; it's only on occasion that you run into someone who actually knows how to use him properly.

Samurai Warriors 2 on the 360 still.

About 1/4 of the way in (13 hours, I'm only going to go through the story mode) and still finding new levels I have not played yet.  This game definitely beats out the stale DW Gundam.

Today's the day I'll call up Microsoft and tell them about my shitty DVD drive.  I have about 20-30 games I want to get for the 360 and having to dick around with the drive for five minutes before playing is killing my gaming time.  Plus I need to spend more time away from teh intertubes.

Apparently Microsoft won't fix my janky DVD driver for free.  I would not mind paying shipping charges but I have to pay them to fix it.  So SW2 is the last 360 game I'll buy.  I might try to beat Banjo Tooie and give PGR4 another shot but after that, it is going in the trash.

Now comes the critical question of whether I venture to the Eastern Europe of the console world, the PS3, or if I defect to the expensive but warm and sunny atmosphere of the Republic of Gamers.

Sometimes my 360 won't read any discs, but when I move it from horizontal to vertical it works again.  /shrug

Anyway I've been playing a bunch of stuff:
Zoids Assault - Beat it. The gameplay is decent I suppose, but the presentation is laughable. The entire story is told through a series of static images they repeat over and over. It's only like 8 hours long, so replaying it for the full 1000 won't be too tedious.
Forza Motorsport 3 - Made it to driver level 8 and spent some time with the livery editor. I don't normally like sim racers, but I'm really enjoying this game so far.
Tekken 6 -   About half way through the Scenario Campaign, haven't really done much else. Gonna try to get all the single player stuff out of the way first and foremost.
WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 - Trying to 1000 it before I pick up 2010 whenever Best Buy gets it in. Some of the Road to WrestleMania stories are  :lol worthy (Undertaker turning Santino/Finlay into zombies... smh)
Operation Darkness - Finished the story. I was surprised by how much I liked this game. Lots of missions, solid gameplay, nice art, good voice acting and translation, and even a fairly interesting story. Still need to finish up the Armed Recon and Eagle's Nest missions for the 1000. I'd recommend it to anyone who can put up with the terrible graphics and framerate.

Think I'm going to get back to Culdcept Saga now or maybe finish Star Ocean 4. Gotta burn through that backlog before I lose all my free time  :-*

Played some offline Tekken vs. today.  I was robo-girl vs. my friend's Julia.  Was pretty evenly matched.  Robo-girl is fun; gotta love chainsaws and decaps.

Otherwise SMT SMT SMT SMT SMT.  Just hit lvl.23 around 12 hours in.  Been doing optional sidequests. There are quite a lot and they're all pretty awesome with cool looking optional bosses.

Operation Darkness is great outside the zany camera.  I would have finished it but my X360 ate my saves when I was 20 hours in and I didn't feel like replaying all that again.  Wouldn't mind replaying it eventually before the gen ends.  Not enough good s-rpgs to go around.

The Silo Corridor? That was fucking nasty. Died dozens of times there. Both the left & right paths were some of the worst designed levels in the entire FPS history. It was even harder than waiting for Big Bird to land on the Ferris Wheel level.

Turns out the trick to it is to go prone, makes it easy to pick off the guys in the circular rooms. Fucking stupid design, Rainbow Six kicks this right in the teeth and pisses in its mouth.

I don't actually know what happened to the account at this point.   The guy who started it gave me the info first, then I passed it on.  I skimmed through the last page of the gaf thread and it seems like someone changed the account, and the list has grown gigantic.

And if I'm reading it right, Amir0x is currently reorganizing the list based on previous board conduct. Comical.

On a related note, I don't get why Sony always does this. Preorders, exclusive demos for a few select users, and so forth. Motherfuckers just do not get it.

edit: I guess I'll preorder that special edition thing tomorrow, so I should have two codes.

I dunno, I'm hearing j-bore thinks it sucks.  Then again the ReBirth games always give mixed impressions.  I know a lot of people hated Gradius ReBirth and then a lot loved it.  Same with Contra.

The only one I played was Contra and while I don't approve of the freeware sprite level of graphics, it played fine enough to be a short but decent Contra; though it's no ZOMGAWESOME Contra 4.

Will try Castlevania and Gradius someday.

I just played the God Of War 3 demo.  After playing Bayonetta 360, it felt underwhelming in comparison.  The frame rate wasn't too hot, but I'll chalk that up to it being an old demo.  The controls just felt sluggish at times, and the game play overall was pretty simplistic.  Yeah, it's got lots of nasty gore, but Bayonetta still has more creative, crazier finishing moves.  It's the deeper, better game.  I'm still going to get GoW3 regardless.

I would say the same thing about Castlevania ReBirth.  It's good for ten bucks; I wasn't expecting it to topple the best Castlevanias when I got it.  My biggest issue with the game is that it's too easy, but it's still a good game and worth picking up.  I need to get Gradius too.

Lyte, the GoW games never held up to Japanese top action games before, I wouldn't expect them to now.

GoW games (well I didn't like GoW1 much, but GoW2 gotygoty) are fun because they are like the Jak and Daxter of action gaming.  They're not deep combat, but they strike a good middle ground of fun and flash.  They sport great level designs and setpieces, have uber budgets so they look cool and have a decent length and unlockables, they have an acceptable storyline in an interesting setting, and they are full of manly GAR.  They are like the ultimate big budget popcorn action games.

Also, beating up awesome creatures from mythology to crazy music and with lots of purely brutal moves is just fun. Relatively basic gameplay ftw.

And yet, beating up awesome angellic creatures to even crazier music with lots of purely brutal -but stylish- moves is even more fun.  AND it's deeper because while still "basic" gameplay, there's just so much more you can do in Bayonetta.  FTW.

Platinum knocked one out of the park.  DMC, Ninja Gaiden, and GoW am suiciding.

Did you not see the Bayonetta thread?   :'(

Full version, mayne.  But even the (superior 360) demo has enough to show how much better DAT NETTA is.  Sadly, you just know that it will bomb and GoW will go onto sell truckloads.

I thought it was a bit like DMC, don't those games sell relatively well? If it fails, it will probably be because it's hard to get an idea of direction from what they keep showing. Having flashy bits is great and all, but is there a cohesive style and narrative, or is it just a crazy Best of Wacky Action collage?

Also, is it actually playable by people less than great at action games? And I don't mean the win button, but more general approachability. I like God of War for a bunch of reasons, but none of those would matter much if the game wasn't approachable and satisfying even for someone with my weaksauce action game skills.

That's like...the best and most civilized GoW vs. Japanese Action game post I've ever read.   I'll let lyte field the rest of it, 'cause I haven't played the full version of Bayonetta.  Just going by the demo though, it doesn't seem like the game will introduce anything that'll change your mind about japanese action games.  distinguished mentally-challenged story, somewhat challenging mechanics with a definite learning curve for higher level play, and more emphasis on style than brutality.

If games like DMC and Bayonetta didn't have good gameplay, I'd be out of there so fast...on the other hand, I have a fuckton of qualms about the action engine in GoW games, but still find them enjoyable. Looking forward to the GoW collection to bridge the time between now and Bayonetta.
