any drum & bass heads in Evilbore?
« on: December 08, 2006, 07:54:40 PM »
anybody dig that shit? i've seen y'all talk about trance (which i can't stand). i know if you play any type of console game that DOESN'T have EA Trax or some NOW soundtrack, you've heard it as background music. and probably if you've seen a commercial in the last five, ten years.

maybe you don't know what i'm talking about:

-----

Drum and bass (commonly abbreviated to DnB or drum n bass) is a type of electronic dance music also known as jungle. Emerging in the early 1990s, the genre is characterised by fast tempo broken beat drums (generally between 160 & 180 beats per minute) with heavy, often intricate basslines. Today, drum and bass is still considered an underground musical style, but its currents of influence run throughout popular music and culture.

Drum and bass began as an offshoot of the United Kingdom breakbeat hardcore and rave scene of the late 1980s; and over the first decade of its existence there have been many permutations in its style, incorporating elements from dancehall, electro, funk, hiphop, house, jazz, metal, pop, reggae, rock, techno and trance.

-----

to me, it's like futuristic hip-hop. most of the time without an emcee; although a lot of d&b DJs will bring someone to chat over the beets, which I find distracting - i don't want to hear anyone babble over this space-age shit!

if you need examples, i guess you'll have to PM so i don't break the ToS

-----

for anyone that feels me: Break, Seba, Paradox, Rufige Kru... all killing that shit. Artificial Intelligence, Dillinja, Macc, Digital. Hive representing the U.S.!

-----

Tone, Garnet - even though I'm sure you're just going to be like, *hic* whadds he talking baut - do you hear this kind of shit on the radio out there? I know Victoria fucking Beckham had a hit with Jonny L. producing, and I THINK that was d&b... fucking Metalheadz, Goldie, anyothat?

and finally,  :pimp

I used to roll with a dnb crew out of Athens, GA, of all places.  This was back in the late 90's, early aughts.  We had some AWESOME locals and had some pretty badass people throw down some sick sets in lil' old Athens, including:  Hive, Sage, Vegas of )EI3( (or BC recordings) fame, Mickey Finn, A-Sides, DJ Lee, Dieselboy, and my personal favorites:  Total Science, who played TWICE.  Once for like $5, which to this day remains the best $ to bad ass record ratio I've ever paid in my life.

There were good shows in Atlanta, too:  Ed Rush, Klute, High Contrast, LTJ Bukem for the more intelligent set, and my personal dnb hero, Andy C.  That man is a golden god on the decks, f'realz.

After I moved down to the ATL in mid 2001, I kind of gradually lost most of my contact with those kids and just kind of stopped listening to it for the most part.  But I still have some killer fucking sets on disc somewhere, and I'll always love the music.  It's fun once or twice a year to relive it at a club, too.
