Tell me you don't want this. Those weapons rule. The environment rules. The GeoMod shit rules. The Multiplayer is the closest thing to Tribes in YEARS. Jetpacks. Nano Rifles. YOU CANNOT NAYSAY THIS.

Sweet. Have it in-hand. Instruction booklet hints at a lot of cool stuff. It looks like it's close to Saint's Row 2- You do a variety if mini-missions to unlock story missions. There are also "gangs". Multiplay looks AWESOME. There's a mode wheere one team trys to knock downa  huge building and the otehr team tries to keep it together. Some local multi modes look cool, too. Whole package looks awesome.

Rveiews are starting to post and they're universally positive

It is very close to Saint's Row-- the Ultor Corporation is even present in both games!  In fact when you finish the third DLC #2 mission in SR2,
spoiler (click to show/hide)
your character even tells the Ultor Exec "You can go to MARS for all I care!"
[close]
   :lol

I know Volition does both games, but is it the same team on both titles?  Going by the demo, RFG pretty much tops SR2 in my book.  Tighter control, better game play, and more-detailed visuals.  It's going to top SR2 and be the best sandbox "GTA" game yet, IMO.  I am completely pumped up to get this tuesday.

A lot of gameplay mechanics look to be VERY similar, but the actual play itself is worlds apart. RFG feels tighter to me and, of course, GEO MOD YO. I'm wondering how good of a "sandbox" it'll be, it seems like it might just be a good action-adventure game with a lot of freedom, I'm not sure it's an environment I'll want to spend a lot of time fucking up pedestrians in

Just like Saint's Row 2 (kinda)!   :lol

I didn't care about fucking with the civilians in the RFG demo, but loved doing shit to the EDF troopers.  Blowing the shit out of everything and really going "guerilla" on all the enemies was just incredibly satisfying.

Plots a little dumb. But the SCALE of some of the shit you get to blow up is amazing. The first mission has you blowing up a 3 story lab and I knocked out a bunch of supports, but ran in anyway to  collect some shit. I like knocked into a waLL AND WHAM, 3 stories fell on my head, haha.

Also, there's a like 75 foot tower you get to blow up and it falls like a club on a huge building in it's path. Totally amazing. So fun

Spent a few more hours with it today:

-Yeah, a lot of the missions feel a little "same"-y, with goals and mechanics built around BLOWIN SHIT UP, but I think the moments when the game really shines are when it doesn't put the BLOW SHIT UP right in your face. A lot of times, when you're just drving around, you'll get a call to defend a group of colonists or whatever. The game posits like 10 of your scrappy RF dudes against maybe 20 or 30 EDF dudes in two or three waves. It's thrilling enough to watch your 10 dudes take positions and fight for their lives, it's poistively fucking AWESOME when all you hear is creaking steel and the buildings are collapsing around you.

-Speaking of: Multiplay rules! Deathmatch feels a little uneven. The other modes are way better. Siege is really fun- One team attacks a structure while the other runs around and tries to put it back together. You also get XP for a lot of different things that kind of force you to mix up your play style.

-Also also: Anecdote time! We had a stubborn sniper on a smoke stack, nobody could get him down. So we did the next best thing: 3 team mates, hacking at the stack, we toppled the thing with him in the wreckage. Totally unique, really fun.

-Plot got a little better. It took a major left turn to weirdsville, I won't spoil because it was a genuine surprise. It feels a little sci-fi cliche, but it's still genuinely exciting. It's not "good", but it's entertaining.

-The music RULES.

-Car handling is nice. Every car feels distinct. That said, the dune buggy is almost always the ride of choice.

-Lots and lots and lots of collectibles. 300 ore deposits, 100 propaganda posters, 30 radio tags etc etc.

-Upgrade system is cool- Prices are just right. You can't really afford all of them, but you get enough that you don't feel stuck. It's nice to have to choose and create a playstyle around it.

Anyway, A+ so far.

It just "feels" very similar. There are backpcks you can pick up and swap on the playfield and each one gives you a different superpower- There's Jetpack, Vision (XRay), Concussion (knock people out), Heal, Thurst (A one-boost SUPER JET PACK that also blows shit up around itself), Rhino (Charge through walls), Firepower (Ups your attack) and a few others. So there's a lot of people flying around, a really strong focus on team work.

Multi-player is where it's at. Single Player is C- to B+, the missions are pretty interesting  the locations are cool and you get to blow up some GARGANTUAN shit. It has has a classic GTA3 feel- You can park cars across a road or bring a bigger gun if you failed the mission the first time. It gives you a LOT of leeway in terms of how to solve missions.

I've had missions be a total clusterfuck the first failure and then go smooth as silk the second time because I snuck around the back way or cased a garage and found a mech. There's a lot of freedom. But it's also kind of short? I've been in for 10 kind of leisurely hours and I guess I'm about 2/3 through?

Multiplayer keeps getting better. Every match so far has been skin-of-my-teeth close except for one. I don't know if that's a testament to balance or the player base or what, but it's pretty thrilling. Team Deathmatch seems most popular, although why is beyond me. I prefer Free For All. Siege rules, CTF rules, Objective (the demo one) rules. Neat-o unlocks, lots of xp bonuses. Good stuff.

I haven't checked the in-game stats yet, bit the Multiplayer stats are really comprehensive.

Collectibles come in a few forms: Propaganda billboards to be knocked down (250), big blocks of black ore to be mined (300), radio tags that tell the past of ULTOR (35) (And unlock something? I only found one, but it told me that if I found 2 more it'd unlock the location of something) and supply crates to be BLOWED UP (250).

They're not on the radar (You might be able to get an upgrade for this), but in a lot of case sthey're highly visible. Sometimes they're hidden in a valley or something. It'll take some work to get them all.

Picked up the 360 version today, got rid of Sacred 2 among other games, but RFG is so much more satisfying so whatever.  The clerk also gave me the pre-order bonus, a 125-page handbook with artwork, character designs, weapon info, a preview of the strategy guide, and a comic.  Nice, but nothing worth pursuing if you miss out on it.

The game is similar to Saint's Row in that you've got various points of interest marked on the map, and along the way, you'll also run into civilians/fellow guerillas who need your help taking out EDF soldiers.  You get "rep" by helping out in these fights and destroying EDF territory, which then enables you to be able to do missions, much like doing activities in Saint's Row 2 does.  It's much more serious in tone than SR2 though; no kookiness to be found and nothing too crazy; you're just taking out buildings and structures, but it's all done so damn well.  Haven't tried Wrecking Crew or multiplayer yet.

You can't do anything to the ground or tunnel through rocks, but you can take out any buildings or other structures.  I don't know if guns will work (at least not the ones you start with), but your trusty hammer and charges will do the trick.  You can also drive vehicles into buildings and as GilloD says, in the demo once you get the walker, you can literally just walk through everything and destroy anything in your path!

There a series of missions called "Heavy metal" or something that basically pits you in some kind of heavy machinery against like 40 tanks or soemthing. It RULES.

Also, #1 fave thing: the freedom to pursue missions as you choose. I was having a REALLY hard time with one mission when I realized there was a construction yard down the road. I popped down there, found a mech and DOMINATED the mission.  It's up to you, none of that GTA-style fade to black and reset the play area shit.

Ah, I got the mech and smashed a few things; I thought GeoMod was a FRACTURE-style terrain deform thing. The mech was pretty cool, smashing stuff was good; in all honesty the mounted weapon sequence felt better than the mech. The targeting and damage model was fun, and tossing cars into the air with the shots and then shooting them again before they landed was good fun.

360 version. Aliasing isn't as bad as, say, Infamous, but it's definitely there. The screen tearing is among the worst I've seen this generation, but then I've never played Saint's Row. It's not a big deal, though: the game actually looks a lot better than I had expected, and screen tearing is preferable to frame drops.

Game is fucking awesome so far, and these have just been basic destroy and defend missions.

don't really like the driving.  It isn't GTA4 bad, but it's really floaty.  One side mission needed me to change another vehicle.  I go up a small slope at slow speed and fly off the edge of this hill.  I can't get back up and lose the other vehicle.

There are 6 (?) modes. Seems like a good diversity, I think Team Deathmatch seems to be the most popular, but it's not hard to find a mathc in anything.
