So I think I screwed up royally. I have a friend, oh, let's call her drug addicted skank, and she has a mother. Mother has me on some sort of mass mailing list, which she uses to assault me almost daily with distinguished mentally-challenged fellow Texan propaganda. You know, stupid factoids about the military and god, and my favorite I got today for the FOURTH TIME: Can a muslim be a good American? I bet you can guess the conclusion the e-mail came to.

In a fit of emotional honesty I replied that the list was flawed because the very first bullet point asserts that you must be Christian to be a "good American."
So now my atheism and tolerance of other cultures is out there in the open. I expect to be prayed for furiously and possibly kidnapped for brainwashing.

Why should you hide? My in-laws are pretty Christian, but they know where I stand on Christianity and religion. We have a mutual agreement codified by a hundred arguments: they don't sigh and roll their eyes about gay folks or atheists, and I don't LOLZ whenever they make a Biblical aside. We get along just peachy these days.

Of course, in the end, they're rational folks. They've accepted that their daughter and me ain't church-goin' folks, and that their granddaughter is destined to burn as an innocent soul in hell thanks to us. That either takes an EXTREME level of cognitive dissonance -- or a layer of hithertofore unsuspected sanity they wouldn't like to directly acknowledge. In the end, everyone's gotta deal if they wanna get along, and you might as well see just how far yer "second mom's" crazy-ass rabbit hole goes.
