The crashes don't take 12 seconds. They are long but if they let you skip them there'd be less of a penalty for crashing. Plus it makes you want to get better and crash less.
OK, I admit I slightly exaggerated that number but they're still pretty frickin' long, longer than they should be. They should at least let me skip after 3-4 seconds, and if that's not enough of a penalty than they could easily figure out a solution to remedy that. Like, deducting the normal 10 or so seconds off the stunt run clock even though the crash in real time lasted only a few seconds.
Menus? You load the game and it starts you in your car (ok there is that dumb webpage thing they added, but just close it).
I'm on 360 (so I don't know how it is on PS3), but here's how it goes:

Press A to acknowledge auto-saving
Press A to go past the weather/calendar/news board
Press A to choose whether you want to go into Paradise City, cops and robbers, BSI, etc
Press A to choose whether you want to use regular cars, boost cars, toy cars, etc
Press A to choose your car
Press A to choose your paint scheme
Press A to confirm
My only complaint about BP is that we should have had a full BP2 by now with a brand new map even larger than BP. Instead we get a small, but enjoyable island that is about 1/5th the size of the original game.
Eh, the game came out in January 2008. They wouldn't be releasing an all-new Burnout anytime soon. I bet the Need for Speed game they're working on for fall 2010 is a spiritual successor to Paradise anyway.
