I'f they're trying to sell to casual players who don't already have a 360, the price of a console+peripheral pack can't be that high.

yeah, in a bundle with an arcade for $250 (price of a wii), $150-200 standalone

One possibility I would like to see is the combination of Natal and 360 controller used in a single game.  It's obvious that Natal is not going to be well suited to all software, but if you have it setup, I could see it working alongside a traditional game.  They could combine voice control, body movement, and controller based input.

If you were exploring the world of Fallout, for instance, they could use standard input for general movement and combat but allow for Natal to handle some interface tasks.  Imagine if all items in the world shown on screen could be directly interacted with through hand movement or something.  How about a game where the AI responds to your voice?  I'm not sure how useful it might be, but being able to yell "HEY!!" and having the AI respond accordingly would be kind of nifty.

There won't be a Wii fit for Natal.
Kind of funny you say that considering that the Wii balance board is not included with the Wii console.  Sure, it comes with the software, but MS could find a killer app to bundle with Natal.  Many of the most successful Nintendo games released on the Wii come bundled with random pieces of hardware.

I think for Natal to really be successful, they need to do a general product redesign of the 360 to accompany it. Different packaging, different form factor, while obviously the same system. I don't know if they had these kinds of plans all along or if Nintendo opened their eyes to the motion-control possibilities, but Natal will be the way Microsoft captures the living room (if it is to ever happen).

Or they could crash and burn. Eh, either way.

This is what's going to happen. It will come out, no one will support it and it will fail. The only reason why the Wii has been successful is because motion controls are standard and the software is there to support it. There won't be a Wii fit for Natal.

But the article shows that they understand this -- they are devoting their resources to ensuring the killer apps will be there at launch.  I have no idea whether they'll succeed in doing this, but I don't see what it being an 'add-on' has to do with anything -- that just means more ways of obtaining it.  You can buy a new console with it packed in, or you can spend less money on just the add-on if you already have the console.  The only reason Nintendo didn't do this with the Wii Remote is that the Gamecube had a reputation as a loser, which 360 doesn't.

Natal is an add-on and unless it has a really popular game everyone will want for it, I don't expect it sell much.

Given the cost of most 360 accessories, I think it will be at least $99.  A fat profit margin so even if the idea tanks, the project will still end up in the black.  Although I'm sure it will sell at least 100,000, I'm not sure if people are going to see it as a waggle killer.

They are promoting the fuck out of it but they may hit a point where the few gamers that give a fuck about this will get tired of hearing about it.  It is a sensitive balance to prevent it from being underhyped and overhyped, like most fads fail to succeed at.

Hopefully this thread won't be as stupid as the one over on GAF. All they will be doing is introducing a new integrated model which was obvious to anyone with a brain. Your old 360 isn't going to disappear nor will "hardcore" games vanish on the 360. When you read that thread over there thought it's like people are seeing the end of the world or something or making a lot of extra stupid speculation.

A re-launch makes sense.  I think that they might be successful with it since Natal is expanding what the majority of Wii owners seem to like.  Just that break out demo seems like the Wii Sports Tennis in terms of how it's being shown and people can just jump in and play.  Xaggle has a chance to be a success; Saggle doesn't really have any.

And I wonder if they are going to stick with the name Natal.

My bet

Natal=360 slim-2 SKUs,both packed with Netal-price,sub 200 and 300 $ respectively

Old SKUs-price drop and discontinued

Hardware-CPU/GPU hybrid...IMB-AMD advanced chipset, little more memory,DVD-drive...changes done in order to make smaller, cheaper more effective chipset

Effectively a more "smarter" 360-plays everything that 360 can,but with some benefits...higher framerate, higher levels of aa,af...nothing too drastic

Redesigned 360 dual-analog...its not going away

NXE 2 launching with it-Natal support built deeply into OS

"True" 360 successor launching couple years later after Natal had enough testing...think Xbox Live on Xbox
Basically MS needs test bunnies...

Hmm a good "source" that was right about PSPGo and other things, said essentially this:

This will be 360 slim-same internals, dirt cheap for MS today, just combined differently to be more cost effective

Different form factor-more attractive to casuals

Rebranded-new name Xbox "insert new name"

Natal packed in,available as standalone for existing 360 owners

No Xbox 360 RROD stigma

Dashboard-optionally controlled by Natal

So different form factor, cheap price, rebranded to Xbox "something",Natal packed in,huge marketing blitz=essentially a new console launch

Its aimed at casuals and people that didn't buy 360 for whatever reasons

Parents will think, hey its a new console,it looks cool, its cheap, natal, tons of games...no RROD stigma to drag it down,etc...

Quite genius move...hmm

Quit being such negative nancies!  Natal isn't aimed at you and won't replace or even impact your gaming.  It's an attempt to grab a new audience, and if it occassionally has something that appeals to me (or if it can get my wife more interested in the 360), then I might even pick up whatever it becomes.  I'll need a new 360 within the next year because mine is such a piece of shit, so if I can get it all bundled for a reasonable price, I'll probably go for that.

Quote
GamesIndustry.biz has learned that Microsoft has dropped a chip from its forthcoming Natal motion control system as the platform holder eyes accessible price points in the build-up to release later this year.

Quote
The load previously handled by the chip now falls on one of the main three Xenon processors, but while taking a "percentage" of performance away from the system, most games don't use up 100 per cent of the available processing power anyway.

Quote
The removal of the chip almost guarantees that non-Natal games won't be patched to include motion control support, a point previously outlined by Microsoft Game Studios' Kudo Tsunoda.

I always thought Natal was a bunch of smoke and mirrors, sounds like they're downgrading it even further to hit the mass market pricepoint. I can't really see this doing too well; the Wii already has the casual market locked up and the 360 dudebros won't want to waste their time with this. Sony's disco stick won't be doing shit either, especially with the whole, using the Dual Shock as the analog stick ???

I still think that it could be successful despite the downgraded tech because, like the people who play the Wii, they won't notice the poor performance of the camera/controller.  They'll see crazy shit happen on screen and get entertained.  I still have brief interest in those games, and what it could do for the interface, but for hardcore/real/whatever styles of games you play on the regular 360 controller, I would probably be bad.  It's not like they have to care when the 'gamer' crowd buys their games for the 360.

as for hand signals, I wonder if it would even be accurate enough to detect that stuff.  Maybe you need to do exaggerated motions or whatever, but that still wouldn't help with finger tracking.

I never saw a real point in having some expensive, dedicated chip inside it,there are plenty of processors at your disposal and future will bring you many more. Its better to work on software solutions and i think that 360 can easily track some virtual stick-man.

Besides this has to be cheap mass market product, sold with every console to make an impact and its a good thing that it won't affect hardcore games too much.
Even if it was the most precise,0 lag motion controller, how would you play hardcore game like Bayonetta on it? :lol
