What to expect from thirtysomething angst?
« on: June 22, 2009, 03:19:19 PM »
I have enjoyed the transition from teen angst to twentysomething angst.  In just three short years I will be making another transition, and I'd like to hear some thoughts from those who've already experienced it on what I have to look forward to.

Biggest downside is that if you want to go out with a teenager it's "eww cradle-snatching" as opposed to when you were 29 and it was "high five dude".

There really are no other downsides.

I believe it was the old poet Kurt Cobain who once penned "teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old." Wise words.

Of course, Courtney Love killed him before he ever reached 30. Very tragic.

I'm not liking the mid 20s too much.

I feel that I'm getting too old to nail college chicks yet I have no plan to ever really get married, which some women my age want to do right now.  I'm doing great money-wise but I'm at the bottom of the totem pole of the company with no real light at the end of the tunnel.  It seems like working 7-5 shifts will be going on forever.  As soon as one project ends, another one starts.  I've started putting away money into savings and 401k for retirement and for later use.  Then I :-/ at the thought that I'm already, in my own way, planning to be in my mid 60s, having my ass wiped by a nurse in a retirement home.  I hope he's hot.

I'd like to get to 30 as soon as possible.  By that time, given divorce rates, the pool of good looking but freshly divorced women wanting nothing to do with marriage will increase.  Also, I should have a few pay raises and promotions, to where I can work 40 hours a week for a change.

Just a thought.

Yes  :-\

Well, I do want to get married.

Yes

also yes, but that's not so bad for me

Too early to say that for me.  I'd say I have a good chance of advancement if I play my cards right.

It seems like working 7-5 shifts will be going on forever.  As soon as one project ends, another one starts.

I don't have a problem with this. But then, my projects are probably more interesting than yours. ;)

I've started putting away money into savings and 401k for retirement and for later use.

I really should save more.  But then, I've been focussing on killing off my student debt (gone by September! woot!)  On the other hand, I have a guaranteed pension awaiting me upon retirement, so me saving would really just be something to bump up my retirement Standard of Living, not really a requirement.

Then I :-/ at the thought that I'm already, in my own way, planning to be in my mid 60s, having my ass wiped by a nurse in a retirement home.  I hope he's hot.

Ya, that thought sucks, but I'll be damned if I end up in a retirement home.  I'll die at age 86, self-sufficient to the day I die, so help me God.

I'm gonna turn 27 next month and people are already giving me shit for wanting to go out with college girls... also I get shit from one group of friends that say "you should go out with a fat girl, it's all about whether or not you click, not what she looks like", and another group that says "you can do better than X girl". Stuff like that really mixes up my standards. Also, I tend to really go for the 'girl next door' type, and some friends think this isn't compatible with my personality at all.

I'm having a bit of a late-20's angst myself - my job is good and I make good money, I put 16% (plus 4% that the company matches) towards a 401k.But, I still can't afford a place of my own, so I still live at home (like many of my peers), my dating life has come to a standstill this year, my friends want to do nothing more but go to the same bars and restaurants over and over, I feel one of my favorite hobbies of the past is passing me by (gaming) and leaving me by the wayside... only thing that has been interesting to me lately is discovering new music.

I do want to get married, but I don't think it will happen any time soon since I haven't met anyone. I'm worried that I will end up with a 30+ year old with 2 kids or someone who has 'been around the block' multiple times.

30's angst? I thought this would be just that momentary transition from 29 to 30 that a lot of people freak out about. So many of my friends freaked out badly enough that I assumed it would happen to me as well. It came and went, and I didn't feel any different. Same thing with 40, though I'm honestly wishing for more time with my wife, going out and stuff like that. I also wish I had enough spare time and local friends to run a tabletop RPG, but that appears to be the extent of my personal pathetic-ness.

When I look back on the people who freaked out, I think it mainly happened because they were unhappy with what they had at that stage of their life, and they saw themselves carrying that inadequacy into what they perceived to be the next stage of their life. But the 10 year marks are purely a psychological construct, onto which they attached additional problems, which only resulted in magnifying them. Instead of appreciating what they have, they focused on what they hadn't managed to achieve yet, and set themselves up for more stress and feelings of inadequacy.

That said, it might be nice to bang some college girls.

Experiment with new hobbies, foods, explore new places.  I have sort of a similar situation and that's what I've been doing to keep life interesting.  I can't deal with days being the same thing over and over.  I need to keep trying new things.  There's not-surprisingly enough things in this world that you don't run out quickly!

Being 30+ is great.
You can still be like an immature late teen douche, but you have money which obviously leads to more options than just smoking a J in your parents basement.
