Should I see Drag Me To Hell or Transformers 2?
« on: June 24, 2009, 10:22:09 PM »
I get off work tomorrow at 5.....there is a party near there around 9:30, and I really don't wanna drive across town just to turn around and head back after sitting around my apartment for a couple hours.  So I'll probably grab dinner somewhere and, against my better judgment, actually venture into a movie-theatre.  I've narrowed my choices down to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Drag Me to Hell.  I thought about UP, but I've honestly been disappointed by every over-hyped Pixar flick since Toy Story 2......after walking out on Ratatouille, I haven't really let myself fall prey to the "OMG THESE MOVIES ARE A GIFT FROM JESUS HIMSELF" buzz.

So what's the best option?  I never saw Transformers 1 and have zero nostalgic attachments to the franchise (it's garbage for manbabies).  OTOH, I would like to see a ridiculous Hollywood trainwreck and Bay's film looks like it's ready to deliver in a way Wolverine couldn't.  OTOOH, there were many complaints about shakycam cinematography for the first one, and I'm not sure if I can really tolerate a 2hr 30min trainwreck.

Drag Me To Hell looks cool, and because it's several weeks into release I'm certain the theatre won't be full of pissant children and loudmouth teens, as I'm sure every Transformers screening will be.  The downside is I heard it gets kinda goofy, and I never really cared for Raimi's mix of horror & funny.  Plus it's only like 1hr 40 minutes, so it'd leave me with 2 more hours to kill in between the end of work and the beginning of the party.

The Transformers cartoons were great, no need to be offensive.

That said, I think you should see Transformers 2.

Drag Me To Hell is amazing. Don't support shaky cam bullshit (though it's futile since it will make a gazillion dollars).

Drag Me to Hell was the most fun I had at the theaters all year.  Easily one of Raimi's best.

There's showings of Transformers 2 at 6:15 and 6:45.....but the only screening of Drag Me To Hell after work ends is 7:35.  So I suppose I could buy a ticket for Transformers 2, and just leave after an hour and go see Drag Me To Hell.

I always feel like such a cheapass piece of white trash when I go theatre hopping though.

Buy the ticket for Drag Me To Hell and theater-hop to The Bayformers, you'll feel less trashy that way.

I can't do it the other way around.  Drag Me To Hell starts at 7:30, so if I showed up at 6 PM and went in with a ticket to Drag Me To Hell, that'd look a little conspicuous.

Drag Me To Hell was one of the best movies I've seen this summer. Transformers 2 was one of the worst.

I watched the first 90 minutes of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.  Even as a "trainwreck" it seemed pretty disappointing.  The action sequences were incoherent CG gobbledygook, and the "human" segments were just some awful comedy bits written at about the same level of sophistication as a Disney channel sitcom.  I didn't even get to see much of the racist bots.  Mostly it was just pointless and boring - not really satisfying even as a bad movie.  To be fair, the plot finally started to get rolling around the time I left.....but if it takes that long for a plot to emerge, then who cares really?

I switched over to Drag Me To Hell at 7:30 and it was pretty good.  In contrast to Transformers, the plot is established within 10-15 minutes and it appropriately escalates from there.  I was kinda sad that all the scares were the usual "Booo!" surprises, since those things don't usually get me.  All the grotesque splatter stuff was great though, and the last 30-40 minutes are all excellent.  I can't believe Eel/Kevin was whining about the ending on The Borecast - it's great, and the "new jacket" that the girl bought was a nice red herring for the ending twist.  The scene in the graveyard was excellent, and clearly the highlight of the film.  The only major problem was Justin Long, who I'm incapable of seeing as anything other that the smarmy "Mac Guy".  Overall though it was a great mix of horror and comedy, and I really enjoyed the moments where the main character strayed from her "Gosh shucks" country girl persona and got pissed off ("I beat you, you old bitch!" "I'm gonna shove it down her fucking throat!").

As a side note, I think I'm pretty much done with seeing PG-13 horror movies in theatres.  I got stuck with a gaggle or irritating teens in the crowd that talked their way through pretty much every non-scary scene in the film.  If I'd actually bought a ticket for Drag Me to Hell I might have complained, but since I was theatre-hopping I had to sit there and bear it.

If I recall correctly (he might have to come in to give a testimonial), it was the scene when Alison Lohman visits Rham Jas for the first time, and he tries to read her future.  The sound builds up and you get a well executed "Boo!" scare, but that sent them over the edge.

It was Disposable White Guy, my brother and myself - and all three of us were laughing hysterically for like ten minutes after that.

Is it me or was the overall volume of Drag Me To Hell way above normally acceptable levels?  Half the reason I didn't go apeshit on the girls that talked through the whole fucking thing was that as soon as a scary scene started, the sound completely drowned them out.

As for the ending:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I gotta say I liked it a lot.  When you look at most horror films, there's this period of victory where the heroine has "won" and then all of a sudden the tables are nonsensically reversed -- Jason/Freddy/whoever just shows up again for no explainable reason because they have to set things up for a sequel.  You thought they were dead, but for reasons unknown they survived.  At least here there was some kind of established setup for the twist ending.  Yeah, it's a little slipshod and convenient.....but certainly better than average.

Willco, in your infinite wisdom of Sam Raimi do you think he'll actually do Evil Dead 4? He keeps claiming he and his brother are slowly writing it, even recently. But I dunno....

He's always been pretty true to his word - he is not a filmmaker, like Tarantino, that constantly talks about projects that don't materialize for years and years.  I think there's an interest there.

That said, I think he's under contract for Spider-Man 4 and 5.

My gut tells me that he's delaying an Evil Dead movie to the point where Bruce Campbell is so old and out of shape that we accept his initial concept of a "reimagining" - which was never popular with fans.

He signed for Spidey 4 and 5 last year, and they're to be shot over six months. But in March he said he's only working on the fourth one.
