Fight Night Round 4 impressions
« on: June 26, 2009, 01:49:43 AM »
Anyone pick it up? Just got it yesterday, played a few fights. It's really good, great strategic game, I don't play a ton of boxing games but its the best one I've ever played. The right analog punching is pretty good, although I often throw punches I don't intend from orientation. Never played Fight Night Round 3, which had button controls, so its not affecting me like some people's complaints about not having button control.

The graphics are incredible, great collision detection (a good amount better than UFC) and some good AI. Although I am having a hard time with the counterpunching system, seems pretty difficult to pull off versus the computer. Juking and blocking at the only ways to do it, and I find it easier to just launch the jab and throw haymaker uppercuts to KO the computer than deal with all that. Still working on that stuff though.

Never played round 3, but I had an awesome 15 round battle yesterday. I picked the two flyweights in the game, and I ended up losing a decision 140-139, 140-139, and 141-138. The computer is very good at counter punching and blocking a lot of punches, even on the easy mode. I suck at it thus far, I need to work on it, but I usually string together outside jabs followed by a big haymaker uppercut to do damage. I land a ton less than the computer does, but I end up doing more damage.

Ah, it's from music on your HDD or PC:

Firstly, apologies to all those FN4 fans that have been impacted by the freeze at the start of the game. We have found a code problem with how we dealt with playlists that caused this freeze – this is not hardware related. We have a fix that solves it and are arranging a title update / patch as soon as possible (this generally takes 2 to 3 weeks to get through the various stages and available on LIVE). To avoid the freeze, please ensure you have less than 35 playlists on your console or streaming from an external source such as a PC via Windows Media Center. Thanks again for the communities dedication and support !

Wow.  :lol

I've never put a song on my 360 anyway. I haven't tried it out, but there's custom soundtracks in this, I'm not sure where exactly to do it, not really worried about it right now.

Put a bit of time in it tonight, and I like it. It's definitely looks more fleshed out than the last one. I found the create-a-boxer a little bit clunkier than Round 3's, and I also found that I had a harder time getting my right cross off in the heat of things, but for now I'll chalk that up to being rusty.

I've yet to try any of the training minigames, and I didn't get knocked down in the two fights I had, so I can't really say yet what I think about the new way you get your character up from the mat.

I lay a beating on poor Tommy Morrison the likes he's never seen. Dropped him in the first round, then again in the fourth or fifth. I hit him multiple times as he went down against the ropes, once in the back of the neck.  :teehee:punch

Played a bit more, started career mode, which begins as a junior tournament, and now I've begun climbing the ranks. There's a lot more variety to the training minigames in between fights which is nice, but I failed two of them horribly outright. I'm pretty sure you can play these outside of career mode on their own, so I'd suggest doing that before jumping in to career mode to try and get a feel for them so you're not losing precious stats.

After that I started chasing the "Beat Ali on GOAT (Greatest of All Time) difficulty", which is pretty tough if you play an offensive style. It really favours countering more than anything, and heavy punches are almost useless as the AI counters them frequently.

So far my biggest dislike is how you get your boxer up off the mat when knocked down. You have to keep a marker centered on screen with the left stick while pushing up on the right. This gets harder to do the more often you get knocked down. I personally prefer the old-school way of just hitting the buttons as fast as you can, but time will tell. It's only been an issue in the "GOAT" difficulty so far, because nobody has managed to knock me down yet in career mode, but I'm sure that will change as I progress.

Well, it sounds like the crash is at the start of the game, and doesn't necessarily require accessing the settings for the custom soundtrack. The game is checking the 360's media settings, and if it finds a mess of playlists on a networked computer, it will crash? That's sketchy.

By the way, the spot where it's handled is: My Corner > My Media > EA Trax. The game shows all the licensed tracks, and any playlists it has found. The playlists can be used for menu music, or for fighter entrance music. Pretty slick, except for that crashing problem.

They give you 59.99 off of FNR4.

Good bye heavenly sword, COD4, and uncharted/mgs4/hot shots

Just beat Tyson on GOTY difficulty. That was some pretty tough shit right there, but got the achievement. :dizzy

And the training minigames in this version kinda suck. I much preferred last years so far.

Traded HS, Grid, and COD4 for FNR4. :rock
Picked up Grid for the 360 too. I figured since it was 26.99 used and they gave me $20 for Grid(PS3) toward FNR4 that I only paid $7 fo Grid(360). I know the track so I figured I spent $7 for achievements. :rock
You should kick my ass sometime Muckhole and Swagz.  :-*

Working on Ali on the GOAT difficulty. Totally different beast from the Tyson GOAT fight. Ali keeps his distance, which is realistic, but frustrating with my fighter who doesn't have a huge reach.

Well, if styles make matches, try using Frazier to beat Ali, a classic clash of styles.

After winning the Tyson match, I realized that there are two different achievements for beating both Tyson and Ali on GOAT, one just for beating them, one again for beating them with a custom character, which I missed out on. I've been trying to kill two birds with one stone on the Ali fight, but my character's reach doesn't compare to Ali's.

I'll keep plugging away. It's difficult, but not impossible, and I get a bit further with each consecutive play.

That would be cool, although I don't know if enough boritos have the game. Plus I have pretty limited access to high speed internet in the summertime. Stupid rural internet. :'(

I'll be down for a tournament. I kinda suck with my character, but I might be able to put up a decent fight with other infighters.

Button whiners got their wish. I never played FNR 3 so I can say if I would like it better, but here it is anyway ...

July 7, 2009 - Fans clamoring for face button controls just got their wish.

Electronic Arts announced plans today to release several downloadable content packs for Fight Night Round 4 on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. One of which being a free update made available in September that allows players to map punches to the face buttons on the controllers.

Another DLC update released later in August will include a new training gym, new gameplay sliders, and new equipment. Xbox 360 owners will also be getting an exclusive alternate version of Sugar Ray Leonard.

"The depth and variety of new content we have planned this summer is going to make one of the most critically acclaimed games on the market even better," said senior producer, Dean Richards in a press release.

Sounds like some gay crap. Gameplay sliders? Does anyone even USE them?
