Merrick here...

Avi Arad is producing a movie adaptation of the popular PS3 game UNCHARTED: DRAKE'S FORTUNE (available HERE).

The story follows a descendent of explorer Sir Francis Drake, a treasure hunter named Nate Drake who believes he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue. The search becomes competitive when a rival hunter joins the fray, then is racheted up several notches when creatures -- actually mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis -- begin attacking those hoping to learn the treasure's true secrets.

...explains THIS piece in Hollywood Reporter.

I just tried to re-watch KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL on Blu-Ray. I can't imagine UNCHARTED could fail more than it did, so I'm cautiously open to this for the time being.

Avi Arad is the guy that brought you GHOST RIDER and SPIDER-MAN 3 and DAREDEVIL.

He also worked on Iron Man and Spiderman 1.

also partially produced by  Charles Roven [ THE DARK KNIGHT]
produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner.
I didn't know that so many producers could be attached to one movie. :o

I really don't know what to think, although from looking at the writer attached, I'm not hopeful. They should just let the screen writers for the game handle this.

Movie of the decade, 10+ Oscars guaranteed, Citizen Kane obliterated according to Wollan, kittonwy, Basch, fortified_concept, Methodis, AltogetherAndrews.

Pfft, I've never claimed that Uncharted was anything more than a very well produced pulp action adventure. Uncharted 2 looks to be crazy hot, but it still is what it is. Blame the state of cinematic storytelling in gaming for being so critically shit that it makes a straight tribute stand out this much.

As for this, it's about the same situation as a Halo movie. A movie based on something that so blatantly borrows from classic movies of the genre seems dodgy as hell.

Avi was originally set to produce MGS.
I have a feeling Colombia pictures is testing the waters with gaming IPs.
ugh, I just want an MGS movie to be accounced, even if it's shit. It can provide lulz. :lol

A Metal Gear Solid movie seems pretty damned superfluous.

Easy man, there's no such thing as great game to movie adaptation. If there was a Baldur's Gate or Deus Ex movie they would fuck it as well. Same with every other game no matter the platform, genre, or popularity.

The only and I mean only exception is Mortal Kombat. The flick was amazing, I thought this would be the beginning of great movies based on games. Alas I was very wrong :gloomy

You misspelled "Street Fighter" in that post.

Oh man, there was a great legal fight about Sahara between the studio and the guy who wrote the book.

They all thought it was going to be a big franchise, and instead they wind up in court with the author calling McConaughey a homo.

the Silent Hill movie is sorta okay, but that was made independent of any studio and had actual creative and talented people making it.  So I wouldn't be getting my hopes up for really any videogame adaptation if SH is the best scenario possible.

Oh yeah, and also.

Dude, I'm SORRY. I don't why I liked it. The dialogue was so canned I thought it was hilarious.

We should make a Nathan Drake sexual innuendo generator.

I really liked the characters in Uncharted. I don't know why. I don't think it's great or anything, but I still liked it. It was cheesy fun.

Sony is asking us who should play Nathan.  Please comment and say:

Bruce campbell for Sully
Nathan Fillon for Drake
Emily rose/Kristen Bell for Elena.

I don't get it.  There is no shortage of movies that are basically what the Uncharted movie would be.  The only thing that would set this apart is that it's based off a good, but not really popular, game.  I guess that might be the same reason it could work as a movie.  At least it will be better than Indy 4.

The only writing I really hated in Uncharted was when he says crap.  It's worse in Uncharted 2 because he says shit, so crap feels even more out of place.
