I wonder what kind of maintenance agreements the manufacturers have with the airlines.  You figure Airbus would have a keen interest in preventing crashes even after they've made the sale.

Also, nothing like this ever happened to me in Aerobiz.

France says that they blacklisted that particular plane because it wasn't up to code or something.  The airline says that that plane actually passed an Airbus-supervised inspection recently so that they are not liable.

I think both sides are just trying to cover their asses from the lawsuits but it'll be interesting to see whether these are just freak accidents or if there's a major design error.

Typical Airbus. Shitty overpriced hardware with a high failure rate.

The one airbus I went on was WAY more comfortable than any Boeing I've been on.  There was a TV on every seat and bathrooms that a gas station would proud of.  I think they even had a smoking section ffs.

Mine didn't crash though.

No, they didn't blacklist it, but the plane received an extra thorough check after being inspected by DGAC (french air safety authority) in 2007 and multiple problems were found. The airline was also subjected to stricter inspections after this. After this incident, this particular airliner has not returned to french airspace, having previously frequented routes to CDG.

Every Airbus I've ever been on has made super fucking sketchy sounds constantly. Yes, I probably only noticed them because I'm completely afraid of flying, but Boeings didn't make said sounds. That being said, Airbuses are more comfortable, and the best flight of my life was an Air Canada (FUCKING BEST AIRLINE EVAR) flight on an Airbus jumpoff of some sort from Denver to Montreal.

My life goal is to buy United Airlines just to shut it down. I hate United Airlines.

What do you hate about United? I use them internationally, and they're pretty good. I've never had a United domestic (USA) flight that went as planned though.

I've had awful delays with United, their planes are uncomfortable, the service was mediocre and the worst landing I've ever had was on United (I used to fly three to four times a day).

I have had bad experiences on many different airlines.  Nothing, however, beats that complete shithole of an airplane that we took from Portland to Minneapolis a few weeks ago on Northwest.  My seat smelled like stale ass and thanks god the flight was at night...ugliest and meanest flight attendants I have ever seen (and I used to work for Delta).  Northwest went downhill quick once Delta got their dirty mitts on them.

I use them internationally and domestically, and the planes are uncomfortable and ugly on the inside (seriously, if I'm going to be on a fucking plane for 8 hours, everything better be bright and happy and those flight attendants had best be hot) not to mention LOUD AS FUCK, the pilots seem to be the masters of rough landings, at least a third of my flights are delayed or cancelled, and the movie selection sucks ass on a regular basis. Not to mention the fact that United hasn't gotten on their plane-painting game in years, so those 777s you fly around the world look like they're ready to fall apart. Not reassuring for someone who hates flying with all of his heart.

All that being said, I'm a PREMIERE EXECUTIVE FUCK THOSE LINES, BITCH I'M GOING TO THE FRONT member, so many of those problems are avoided a lot of the time. I still hate United though. Flying JAL when I go to Tokyo in August, and that's the bottom line.

God, my fiancee is going to be on a VERY long nonstop flight from Moscow to Los Angeles next Saturday and I am so worried. And how do they die in the ocean? I mean, if they fail so far up, can't they get ready to like splashdown and get rafts and shit?

"rafts and shit"? Depending on the nature of the in-flight failure, the aircraft will be coming down in a more or less uncontrollable state. If you "only" have a loss of all engine power, the plane will be working with limited amounts of electrical and hydraulic power. The splashdown will be done with a higher than normal landing speed, on a surface which is very unlikely to be even. The impact(s) will be severe, and structural damage is inevitable. If you survive the impact, getting out of the water-filled fuselage isn't easy, especially if you are far from an exit. And lastly, the ocean is cold. It can kill you even if you are unhurt from the splashdown.

Mew, if she does end up in the ocean on that route, it will most likely be bordering the arctic ocean. She will die pretty swiftly without suffering, if that makes you feel better

I heard that the average plane can glide 20 feet for every foot that it drops.  Don't know how that applies to a jumbo jet's dimensions but my guess is that there was also a hydraulic or electrical failure.

The glide factor for a 747-200 close to optimal glide velocity is around 15, for the 767-200 in the Gimli incident in Canada it was around 12. If you have a flameout on all engines, then you DO have a hydraulic and electrical problem, since the engines provide both hydraulic and electrical power. The only thing left is what is being provided by the ram air turbine and battery power.

If you're talking about this Yemenia case, it doesn't seem to be a case of engine flameout. Seems like there was some fairly strong gusting winds in that area at the time.

Didn't they successfully land a jet with full engine loss fairly recently?

If you mean the ditch in the Hudson, yeah. Double bird strike. During climbout as well, so the dood didn't have much time to think

It doesn't help that the resident 4-year old just told me that we'll probably crash and break our heads.

Also, the nastiest landing I've ever experienced occurred while on a domestic flight, so I'm actually more concerned about the short trip to Luleå.

So uh, I was booking a flight to new york on jetblue cause everyone says they are comfy and safe, but it's an airbus 320a and that reminded me of this thread and I'm kinda iffffffy now.

Tell me these are safe so I can book my trip :X

But I looked up and saw that jetblue has had 0 deaths since they started, so I hope that's safe enough and will book it anyhow.  First NYC trip here I come!

Planes are still safer than driving or taking a train. You'll be fine.
