I'm looking to cement my reputation as the most-necro user on EB, so I've chosen this Dexter thread over the negativity-laced "This season of Dexter sucks ass" thread, the "loads of Lithgow ass" thread, and the "season 3 starts soon!" thread.I mean, hey, we've got existing discussion threads, why doesn't anyone use them?
Anyway, I've started in on Season 2 after being on a long hiatus. I'm up to ep. 5 or 6, and DEXTER KICKS SO MUCH ASS.
Though I have to agree with an earlier observation that the other characters' side stories are lame. They are pretty explicitly side stories, and don't carry much weight for me. I like Sgt. Doakes as a character, but I don't really need to be hit over the head with his special ops training just to set up a scene with another PTSD-suffering vet. It's awkwardly handled. Then there's Maria, who is just annoying every moment she's on the screen, and Dex's girlfriend, and her mom, all of whom are acting like they're on a soap opera, waiting for their drawn out close up shot.
On the other hand, Dex's sister is interesting because she's dealing with some similar stuff to Dexter, but in a different way. As she says, "If Dad taught us anything, it's to respect life." And Dex thinks to himself,
"Yeah, but I think he gave us different homework assignments."
So far, Dex's sponsor at NA also seems interesting; she has a good way of taking Dexter's expectations and turning them around on him.
The books on which the series is originally based sound interesting. Has anyone here tried reading them?
