Had my first car accident today
« on: July 07, 2009, 11:59:24 PM »
Was my fault, completely and foolishly my fault. I feel like a moron, i'm just embarrassed really. Girlfriend was on the car, the other car rammed up the passengers side wheel, the other car got totaled.

Not one scratch on me, but she had her shoulder checked by the window and so she's gonna be feeling it for the next couple of days. It was pretty surreal, i lost my eyesight when i got hit and then recovered looked to her to see if she was fine, made sure that she was, then got out of the car, couldn't get to open her door because it was fucked, then went to see if the other dude was ok because he was still dizzy as shit and in the car, opened his door and checked him.

Such a shitty situation. Minutes before i left the scene, 2 hours into the whole situation, two cars smashed into each other in front of my eyes, pretty surreal. They were ok though.

We signed a friendly agreement, i'm the one who fucked up. Never had a single driving problem yet, not even a ticket but this one sure did slap me a new one. I feel like the dumbest motherfucker on earth. Still have the eco of her yelling "watch out" in my head.

Damn dude.  I'm sorry to hear that.  At least everyone is okay, there were no major injuries.  That's the really important thing.  Cars can be fixed easily.  People are harder to fix.

I thought getting into the car wreck was the scariest thing I experienced until I went to court for mine.

Black man in a courtroom. Scariest moment of my life and it was just a car accident.

I understood little of this post, and how the accident actually happened. Also, you're never supposed to admit fault in an accident.

What does that have to do with the fact that your insurance company will screw you over if you admit fault? Let the police report/insurance company figure it out.

What I'm trying to say. Damn dude, you may have set yourself up for a ton of liability here, and your insurance company may just say "you did WHAT? Eh fuck that, we don't cover personal agreements, its coming out of your pocket now."

I assume you were driving only slightly more reckless than normal if this was your first accident but how did such a big accident actually happen if you don't mind explaining it.

It's probably a bad idea also to agree or sign an agreement saying that it's your fault.  Best course of action is often to not get insurance involved because your rate's going to get jacked up.

Actually insurance isn't on my name, so nothing will happen to me. If i hadn't signed a friendly agreement and the cops called the scene, what would happen is that when we went to court i would've been found guilty pretty quickly, seeing as how i committed a traffic transgression and made a turn left when i couldn't.

So the process would've dragged on, vacations would've been ruined for every party involved, and i would have to pay a fine for the traffic transgression and possibly, and this is a very real scenario, i would've my driving license suspended.

This way, we cut on the fat and time. I'm not that stupid  ::)

I would've gained 0 by not doing the friendly agreement in this case, would've only lost more really. And why was my GF in the car Joe Molotov? Because we were going to eat out. Not that it matters!?

Light goes green, i have to go forward, but she told me to go left and i didn't notice the signs so i went left and was more concerned for the cars possibly coming through the left of me, not noticing the car that came out of nowhere from my right when i made the turn.

In this case, given the traffic transgression, and full accountability of the accident, it was the best course of action.

I don't know where the hell you live, but over here when you have insurance against all risks...it doesn't work that way  :lol

I still don't quite get this.  Can we get an animated diagram?

When I was in high school drivers' education class, back when people all rode DINOSAURS TO WORK, the teacher stressed to us that if we were ever in an accident, never admit fault, never even apologize because it's an admission of guilt. People talk about how lawsuit-happy the USA is, and California is probably the most lawsuit-crazed state in the union. Just exchange insurance company information, and let the companies work it out.

Apologizing is probably still a good idea on both sides, though. Good grief, what a lame world it would be if we apologize for bumping into each other when walking, but not when we wreck each others' cars.
