Crossfit Games
« on: July 11, 2009, 11:49:35 PM »
You guys are probably used to me talking about Crossfit by now, but you probably don't know about the Games. It's a 2 day event currently underway, and may well be the most gruelling and thorough test of strength and conditioning yet devised.

All the coverage with videos, streaming radio etc. is at:
http://games2009.crossfit.com/

The videos are pretty slow to emerge, sadly.

twitter feed, with lots of pics:
http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23crossfitgames

4 of 5 events on Day 1 are now over, and many favorites have taken a bashing. So far, contestants have had to do a 7k hill run (at points so steep that everyone was on hands and knees), deadlift 20 bars with weights starting at 300lbs and rising to 505lbs, sprint uphill carrying sandbags, row, and hammer stakes into compacted ground. All in the baking heat of Aromas. Why there haven't been fatalities yet I have no idea. The most amazing thing to me so far is that the organizers actually seriously underestimated the fitness of the contestants this year. They though that no-one would successfully finish Event 2 (the deadlifts) since most would be seriously debilitated by the hill run (there was only about 40 mins rest between the two events) - a staggering 16 competitors cleared it.

Tomorrow will feature 3 more events. Only the top 16 out of 100 contestants will go forward (16 men/16 women). Should be crazy.

Being European myself, yes  :lol

This is not a strongman competition though (which is basically why Rob Orlando didn't win, since that's his background - he's very new to Crossfit).

There's a Crossfit training place a block from my house. I should take pictures of the people being chased down the street with massive weights above their heads by trainers with water guns.

 :lol :lol

Not really, it's expensive and they'd kick my ass. I live by a lake with a good 2.8 mile trail around it, which is enough exercise for me.

They're starting up a parkour class soon, and a friend of mine is thinking about enrolling in it. That sounds awesome, but I think I'd kill myself.  :lol

damn. i'd kill to have a Crossfit gym in the same COUNTRY as me (closest one is in Okinawa) and you have one on the same block.

why can't i be interested in Gundam and you be interested in Crossfit. things would be so much simpler!

They charge $150 for three visits a week or $180 a week for unlimited visits. I think my wife and I spend $80 a month on a gym membership for the two of us!

Yeah, this is the thing that a lot of folks can't get past. What you're paying for is the coaching, not the use of the equipment. For $180, you can pretty much buy all the gear you'd ever need to do Crossfit out of your garage. But you won't get good coaching for much less. And without good coaching, there's only so far you can go...safely. It's a tough sell to the average dude, but they're only pitching at the hardcore who really do care, for the most part.

Yeah, almost a $800 a month is absolutely insane to me. All I want to do is stay in shape. I don't need to be able to run while carrying a car over my head!

Their site is ambiguous but those have got to be monthly rates. Never heard of anywhere charging that much per week.

It'd be a lot, but compared to a lot of other hobbies, i'd have no problem with it personally. It's the difference between attending a class to learn a language, or going to a library and reading a dictionary by yourself. Only exceptional individuals will get much out of the latter experience.

I can see it being totally worthwhile if it's something you're really into. But honestly, I'm content with my daily 3 mile runs and occasional trips to the gym.

You should start up a Crossfit center in Osaka (?), I'm sure you could make a killing.

To be honest, I make a killing already :lol

It's Tokyo btw.

Yeah, there are no Crossfit gyms in all of Asia beyond one in Okinawa. I'm going to get certified there in September I think. I have no real intention of making a career out of it but it'd be a fun sideline at least. It's exactly the opposite of what most Japanese people want out of a gym, but if you're the first in a given area, you have the luxury of marketing yourself only to the hardcore folks who desperately want a service like yours. There is opportunity here for sure; i'm just not sure that I'm the person to go after it.

I think even with coaching a lot of that Crossfit shit is crazy.

Won't catch me bouncing deadlifts any time soon.

There's a crossfit place a few streets over from our new apartment, but yeah... price is definitely a bit of an issue. It's not expensive relative to typical personal trainer programs, but then I haven't partaken in one of those either.

It's not considered good form even by Crossfitters. Some folks are slave to the stopwatch of course. How is your deadlift coming on then Draft?
