I think my dog is dying
« on: July 12, 2009, 03:30:40 PM »
I have a 10-year-old labrador retriever who has been acting "odd" this past year.  She used to be very excited when people came to the house, she loved to play (although, in smaller bursts as she's gotten older) and she'd devour anything in sight.  One of the best pets I've ever had.  Now she's very listless and it's not uncommon for her to not finish eating her dinner until the following morning (it's the only meal she gets routinely fed) - plus, she no longer will eat table scraps or human food (she will still eat chicken, though).  She seems very depressed.

My family has spent a small fortune trying to diagnose her, but nothing has popped up save for some elevated liver count numbers.  We'd have to do a MRI to find anything else and we just don't have money to burn.

Today, she spent most of her time on the second floor - a rare sight these days - and threw up four times.  Then she collapsed on the landing and began to pant.  She would not move.  It took three people, myself included, about thirty minutes to get her to stand and come down to the first floor, where it's much cooler and she has access to food/water.  She's also been drinking a ton.

I've had other dogs before and this behavior seems pretty scary.

i'm really sorry for telling you this but... what you describe above is exactly what my dog went through. she died a week or so after collapsing the first time. she was 13. hope your dog's in better shape than mine was. but be prepared for the worst.

If I may ask, do you know what causes your dog passed from?

We keep her in good physical condition and she's had better medical care than any other pet I've ever had.  I really hope this isn't what I think it is, but her behavior is unsettling and she looks uncomfortable.

:'(  I'm sorry man... That sucks so much...

We've had bad luck with our pets this year too. We lost 2 pets, our 15 year old collie & just recently our bearded dragon. It's hard, but it's even harder watching what it does to my parents. They carried around that dragon everywhere. She was just as important to them as the dogs.

We took our 2 year old shiba (see avatar) for a check-up on her bad knees, and they ended up bringing her in for a full hip replacement surgery on her left side. So now she'll be recovering for 4-6 months and feels like complete ass, and afterward, we'll have to take her in for the knee surgery....  And her other hip could go out at any time....

:( Damn, that doesn't sound good.  I hope she doesn't suffer too long.  :( :( :(
