I figured I'd make a thread like Boogie, in the off chance that someone here has been to Oahu recently. We're going to be there from August 12th to the 18th. Staying on Waikiki Beach, but also renting a car so we can get the hell away from all the other tourists when we've had our fill. My wife hasn't been, and the last time I was there was 1994, so obviously I'm older now and things have changed. My best friend lives there, so I'm sure he'll have some recommendations, but has anyone been there and know of good non-touristy stuff? Restaurants? Hikes? Beaches?

LOL I haven't been there since 94 either! All I can say is, check out Fernandez Fun Factory (which probably no longer exists - a cursory glance at google confirms my suspicions) and get yourself a shaved ice at some point in the trip. Also, get some portugese sausage with eggs for breakfast.

I was in Hawaii for Christmas 07.

The tonkatsu place next to the Embassy Suites is victory, and the Italian restaurant next to that is awesome too. And uh, drive to the north shore, cuz it's a cool drive and you get to see some crazy surfing (at least I did when I was there). Lock your car when you get there. There's also some famous Hawaiian food van on the North shore, which was pretty good, maybe not worth the epic wait.

That's about it from me. The last time I was in Hawaii I spent 2 days dicking around in Oahu (was awesome), one day on Maui (saw Tom Arnold, who was super hammered at noon at the Four Seasons, awesome), and the rest just reprehensibly drunk on a fucking cruise ship with intermittent stops around the other islands.

Thanks! We're planning on driving up to the North Shore and snorkeling and seeing the sea turtles on the beach.

Hawaii is one of the few places I haven't been. I always end up going to Europe whenever I travel now. Munich in about a month $:-\$

I haven't seen much of the midwest and east coast US because all of my trips growing up were to Europe, Australia and the Middle East. Luckily I married someone from Nebraska so I've now been to a lot of the states in the middle.

We're doing a cheap quick trip to Hawaii right now, and a bigger overseas trip to Japan next April. After Japan we'll probably hit up Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and China before going to Russia and India.

There's a lot of beaches off Kalakaua Avenue, between Waikiki Beach but prior to Diamondhead. Just look for walkways toward the beach between the residences, and remember to be polite. It's quiet and nice without having to get out of Waikiki. Your best bet is to take your rental car and just tool out for the North Shore and stop anywhere that looks nice.

For food, if your wife is jonesing for good Japanese, try Jimbo's Udon. I've not been there in 12 years, but it was just fantastic when I was there; homemade broth and hand-pulled udon noodles.

And don't forget that most places allow you to bring your own drinks with a minor cover charge, so you can hit Safeway or whatever, get an armful of Sam Adams or a nice bottle of wine, and the restaurant will maybe charge your for a glass.

I'm up for all forms of Japanese food, but she primarily loves tempura and ramen. She's not a huge seafood fan, but does like a limited range of sushi. If there are any places with good tempura, I'm all ears. I've been reading through the reviews at Yelp, but they all rave about sushi and ignore pretty much everything else on the menus.

For hikes "stair way to heaven is awesome", but if your not in reasonable shape, it's a death wish. If you got a flashlight the climb to diamond head is pretty.

I forget the name of the grocery store near the north shore but it's got awesome shaved ice. (it's famous, I want to say Matsumoto's)

For beaches north shore is great, especially the turtles. The east side, I forget that parks name, but you can swim and feed the tropical fish. Last I was there in '03 I think I had a better experience on a tourist snorkeling boat then that park. But your there a short time.

I don't know if it still exists but the Wiki Grill, near the denny's close to Wiki beach, had an awesome fish sammich and $1 mai-tais.

It might have gained popularity with the tourists, but the Swap meet at Aloha Stadium is nice to get cheap goods and local fruit/nuts.
