17 year old sails around the world in 13 months - alone
« on: July 20, 2009, 02:34:49 AM »
(CNN) -- A Southern California teenager has serious bragging rights: After docking back in his home state late Thursday morning, Zac Sunderland, 17, can claim to be the youngest person to sail around the world alone.

Sunderland was greeted with thunderous applause and congratulations as he arrived at Marina del Rey in his 36-foot sailboat.

"It's kind of crazy to have it done now because, I mean, for the past year I've been just fighting for the next ocean, fighting to get back. And now I'm back so it's amazing," he said.

The teen acknowledged the 27,500-mile voyage wasn't easy. He told CNN that pirates off the coast of Indonesia gave him quite a scare.

"I had a boat circle in and ended up calling in the coast watch and they chased them off but, yeah, I lucked out there! About an hour and a half of hell."

Severe storms also were a problem, he said.

Sunderland's Web site says he bought the boat with his own money.

His parents had hoped he would find something that would spark a fire in him, a passion that would direct him away from all the negative and harmful influences that are so prevalent in society, but even they were stunned by the scope of his dreams and desires, it says. He was 16 when he left Marina del Rey on June 14, 2008, aboard his boat, Intrepid. Solitude and exhaustion were just a couple of factors that faced him each day.

"The hardest constantly was the tiredness," he said. "I mean, you get over the loneliness, but tiredness, it's an ongoing thing. Half the time I haven't slept in 48 hours and it's just hard to get enough rest."

Sunderland said he made some good contacts along the way.

"It's interesting just thinking back to the different places in the world because I have so many friends in different parts of the world that are like family, you know, and all these different experiences," he said.

"It's an amazing year. It seems like yesterday that I was here but in other ways it seems like a hundred years."

So what's next? "Yeah, I don't know, just go chill with my friends," he said. "Go skate. Go do something normal for a change, you know."

Another kid who is 16, a Brit, is about to dock in 3 weeks and become the younger. And some Aussie who is 15 is going to try it soon, so his record for youngest won't last long.

Here's a better article on it:

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-zac-sunderland17-2009jul17,0,3460856.story?page=1

"He endured brutally long windless periods while bobbing cork-like beneath a blazing sun, eating canned food and drinking nothing but tepid, desalinated water."

That sounds like the shittiest part, no wind waiting for the boat to go.

He's not exactly alone.  He's got his Daddy's money with him and of course he docks at different ports and undoubtedly there are people there waiting for him.

Yeah, from the sound of the Los Angeles Times article, his father actually flew to ports around the world repairing the kid's boat as needed.

I'm just saying it'd be different if a 17 year old kid actually tried doing it on own, financing it himself and whatnot.  I'm not really impressed by rich kids and their danger-free endeavors.

Doesn't change the fact that he spent days/weeks alone in a boat in the middle of the ocean getting chased by pirates, caught in storms, and waiting out extended periods of doldrums.

Also:

When Sunderland decided to attempt the circumnavigation, he purchased a 36 feet (11 m) Islander for $6,000, using all of his savings.

Good for the kid, but I'm skeptical he did all of this himself.

No fucking way did a 17 year old kid manage to sail around the world in a year - by himself no less - without any external help.

He continued his schooling while on his trip, saying, "I have all my books with me. I have one more year to finish at high school and I have to send back my tests (via e-mail) to my mom. She's going to grade them and make sure I am doing well."

I didn't get to sit on a boat and continue my "schooling" when I was 16-17. I had to sit my ass in a classroom. NOT FAIR!

The mom sure did roll her eyes at the "the pirates stole my homework" excuse.

Assignment graded by Mom while the kid is in a boat in the middle of fucking nowhere. yeah, that will be impartial.

BTW, anyone know of any home schooled kid who went to a good University (top 30) directly after "graduating"? I sure don't

Great achievement, even if he is filthy rich it's quite cool. It's easy to dismiss this but if we were as rich as him we'd do the same.

I'm fairly certain no amount of riches would ever lead to me sailing around the world alone.

The only thing being rich allowed him to do was get all the proper equipment for the trip.  His boat was decked out with solar panels and all that navigation/communication equipment.    Even if I could afford all that stuff, I don't know if I would be brave enough to sail around the world.  My excuse is that I can't swim, or haven't tried two in four years.  Maybe I'll buy a zeppelin and fly across the world.

This.

Pirates, storms, days/weeks with no wind are all things that I don't care to deal with.

Sharks are a danger to 36-foot sailboats?

sailing around the world at 17 is like jump-roping on a unicycle, it might be an impressive accomplishment but there's no real motivation to do that unless you're going for a world record.

I did but he didn't home school his entire K-12 career and he was a ridiculous cheater. Also a major headcase.
