Mini-reviews from the B2G1 Gamestop haul
« on: July 20, 2009, 11:01:56 PM »
Updated as I play them!  As if you care!

Star Wars: Force Unleashed (360) - Fuckawful camera.  Pretty cool powers, lots of unlockable stuff.  Better story than any of the three prequels, but that's not saying much.  Lots of cheat codes.  Repetitious.  C+ so far.

I was shocked as shit to see a local video store selling it for $15 new. Still wound up passing on it.

Was it actually that bad?

I thought it was a great game, actually. Not GOTY worthy or anything, but still a great game nonetheless.

edit: The Jedi Temple DLC level is only $5 this week on XBL, too.

Frontlines: Fuels of War

I've played games with stupider plotlines.  And, I always love the delicious fucktardery of an earnest message sent to the wrong audience using the wrong channels.  In this disc-based game made out of petroleum-based plastics which requires a large amount of energy to play, you get to shoot a bunch of brown people while listening to a not-so-subtle message about how dependency on oil and petroleum-based products leads to an awful end for everyone.  It reminds me of buying the $40 Collector's Edition Dawn of the Dead boxed set so I could listen to George Romero ramble on in the commentary about how consumerism turns everyone into zombies.

Not bad.  The plot is good, the graphics are really nice, and the physics force stuff is fun.  It just gets really repetitious after the first hour, and the camera does frustrating and awkward things which will have you muttering "goddamnit" under your breath because shit is happening and you can't see that shit happening.  Could've used a couple more months in the oven.  C+ = a little above average.

A couple more months of polish?  The game was massively overbudget and delayed as is!  I think it nearly bankrupted LucasArts.

Even though it was pretty mediocre, it did confirm that video game writers can write a better Star Wars story than George Lucas.

I was not discounting it - I went nuts over Knights of the Old Republic when it came out - but just that talentless video game hacks can even poop out a better story than Lucas.

I want to play KOTOR at some point. At the time it came out, I wasn't interested in hearing any Star Wars story that didn't involve Luke and his contemporaries. Now I just want SW stories that don't suck. I tend to think of the Prequels as a massively well-funded series of non-canon fan films.

George nearly broke Liam Neeson who, after working with GL on Ep. 1, decided he was done with film. Period. End of story. Sure, it only lasted 6 or 10 months or something, but it takes a certain caliber of director to take someone who is an old hand at movies, generally considered a consummate professional, and get them to temporarily burn out of their chosen career.

GL also managed to get Natalie Portman in a role where she doesn't act a lick. Sure, he gets some points for having her show off her tummy and get her nipples to perk out through a thick top -- presumably  on the VERY HOT DESERT PLANET TATOOINE the air conditioning on the royal space yacht was just on too high. But she's a talented, intelligent actress by most accounts. Why not, you know, USE THAT in addition to perving out to captive monster-food porn?

50 Cent was more linear, while Frontlines delivered huge battlefields and firefights, along with extremely good online support.

Just looking at the facts, man. Unlike Borys Schmotski over here. Hey Borys, how was that PC Mass Effect developed by -a completely different studio than BioWare-? You fucking putz.

Mass Effect kicks ass. Lots of ass.

I'm not saying that graphics don't affect my opinion of a game, but seriously. Mass Effect looked fucking great for the most part. Oh yeah, there was pop-in everywhere. So? The game still fucking rocked.

I never really understood the hate. Still don't. It's one of the best games of this gen.

Stranglehold - hahahaha, this game is awesome!  The animations get a bit hoky (Tequila dives over everything, even when you just want to hop over a table or whatever), but the shooting is a lot of fun and you feel like an ultrabadass all the time.  I can see it getting a bit repetitive, but so far I am having a blast.  Best of the bunch so far, as far as sheer fun factor goes.

Stranglehold was an awesome $5 buy for the PC.

I thought the story in Knights of the Old Republic 2 was better than in the first KotOR. Except for the last hour or so of the game when it fell apart, it was very deftly written for a familiar setting like Star Wars.
