I posted this is in my thread in the game forum, but it's better suited to real talk.

I recieved this yesterday.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9366651&type=product&id=1218092150636

Unfortunately, I was unable to toy with it until today.

Impressions on my new laptop...

It's really great so far, but there's a bunch of crap pre-installed, as expected, but I didn't expect this much.

So far, about the computer itself....the only problem I have with the design (which is REALLY fucking badass, I love how top of it GLOWS) is the left and right buttons. They're shit and don't feel as if they register well. Thankfully I got myself a wireless mouse along with it.

Oh, and the speakers aren't as good as I was hoping.

But I must say...this computer is a beast. I can load a page on EB in 1 second. I've never used a computer this fast and I can't believe it's mine.

Testing.

This is my desktop currently. Surprised how big everything looks. I thought it'd all look smaller given my resolution.

This is the highest res it can go:

Installing WoW now just to see what this bad boy can do.

I just looked and you can totally play Crysis on that bitch on High @1024x768 (you'll be sitting at 30fps). Play in Windowed mode so you won't have assy non native res being forced.

I just ordered a new Dell laptop. It's my first laptop, and not meant to be a gaming machine, but here's what it is:

Studio 1737, Intel Core 2 Duo P8700, 2.53GHz, 1066Mhz, 3M L2Cache
4GB, DDR2, 800MHz 2 Dimm
Hi Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1440x900)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
500G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium 64-bit Edition English
8X Slot Load CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
Intel 5100 Wireless-N (1x2) Half Mini-Card
Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition

And, of course, it comes with a free upgrade to Windows 7 upon release.

I didn't do much customization beyond beefing up the processor a bit (from 2.10 GHz) and adding Office. I would say it's a shame I didn't get Access with it, but I can just as easily use SQL Server Express for any database needs.

Get rid of whatever trial software is on there, especially whatever shit AV program is installed, there are better free ones. Burn a cd from another computer(or use a usb drive if you have one) with an installer for another browser like FF or chrome and run it on your laptop.

probably due to the bloated drivers/softwares that were installed.

now that you are on win7, all you need is nvidia/ati latest driver and just let win7 handle the rest of the drivers (start--> all programs--> windows update), that's what i do with my desktop pc and laptop.

Yeah, most of your problems with Vista probably had little to do with Vista and much more to do with shitty OEM config

but 7RC is a nice place to be, good to have you here.

my 7 notes:
- I like the taskbar to be on "Combine when taskbar is full mode"

- I also like having a "System" library consisting of my Windows and Program Files
directories so I can readily search them, guess this is pretty developer-centric tho

- Learn to use the new Windows key shortcuts: Win-Left to move windows to left side of screen, Win-Right to move them to right side, Win-Up to maximize, Win-Down to minimize, Win-[number] to bring up the [number]th app on your taskbar, Shift-Win-[number] to start a new instance of that app (same as shift-click on the icon).  They are omg so useful.  Also pin folders you commonly open to the Explorer icon

- for God's sake keep your stuff in your home directory and not in some random folder off C:\.  Windows is a real operating system now, since Vista it actually has a sensible folder structure: C:\Users\[name], while not quite as nice as /home/[name], is a big step up from whatever insane gobbledygook it was in XP; welcome to the 70s

- for God's sake learn to use the Start menu search bar + new Explorer features: breadcrumb bar, search bar, dropdowns in columns in Details view, Alt-P to toggle preview, ctrl-mousewheel to change views.  also if you do a lot of stuff on the commandline/Powershell, you can Shift-rightclick on a file to get a context menu with a "Copy as path" option complete with quotation marks  :hyper

omg I just discovered that List view when icons are grouped/stacked shows each group as a vertical column and arranges them horizontally :omg

otoh the left pane in 7 kinda sux compared to Vista.  apparently some tards complained about the nice horizontal autoscrolling thing they had going so they took it out  :gloomy and replaced it with ... nothing, not even a normal horizontal scrollbar.  i guess you're just supposed to expand the left pane now, but that is so dumb.

Also, the default UAC setting in 7 is completely broken and should not be used.  See http://www.pretentiousname.com/misc/win7_uac_whitelist2.html (scroll down to "UAC in Vista and Windows 7: Mistakes then and now")  Either turn it back to the highest level (equivalent to Vista), as I do, or turn it down to Elevate Without Prompting if you don't believe in the sudo concept, but don't use the default as it makes no sense.

I find 1900x1200 almost as much of a hinderance as a gift, my laptop has some sweet muscle (the Quadro equivalent of an 8800) but it takes alot for games to run in the native resolution.

haha, that pic wasn't from my laptop, mine is 5.1 because of the processor

i think prole's is 5.3

windows experience index doesn't mean much - it tells me that COD:WaW recommends a 5.3 index, yet I can blast it at max settings with no problem

my netbook gives me a 2.7, and i can't run much of shit on it

it's really all in how well a game is optimized - as i said before, prototype runs like ass and that game is no crysis, while i can smoke Fallout 3 on Ultra settings

Himuro, just be sure and get the latest drivers from Nvidia, the ones that came with your rig and the ones that Win7 loads will surely be outdated

also, resign yourself to the fact that you'll always be tweaking your game setting to get the best performance out of each individual game - the default settings are rarely optimal

also, 1366x768 is a fine resolution for the hardware - laptops with crazy resolutions will creak if you try to crank your games up that high, unless you have some insane SLI vidcard setup

5.9 is the max it records

mine is 5.7 because of my hard drive transfer rate and processor.  I have on idea what that means but most games run at max, so whatever.
