What to watch after the Wire?
« on: July 29, 2009, 11:40:46 AM »
I just finished season 4 last night and am going to have 5 done early next week.

Shows I didn't like:
--6 feet under
--Weeds

Shows I'm starting to kinda not like:
--Dexter

the showtime shows always seem to have a gimmick, usually a pretty good one, but then run it into the ground for a bunch of seasons before calling it quits.

Entourage and Deadwood seem pretty good.

I'm doing an Entourage run now, liking it, 2,5 seasons in.
Recently did the same with The Shield (pretty cool), Oz (cool) and Skins (more hit than miss).

Big Bang Theory
The IT Crowd
Doctor Who
Torchwood
MASH

That's what I've been watching lately.  IDK what you're in to, but those are good.

If you surf/post message boards you must be equally sick at yourself since that's where all their material comes from.

I think it's a pretty clever show occasionally, Sheldon is great and the blonde is nice to look at.

It's more like NeoGaf: The Show but yeah.

I don't see how anyone actively posting on message boards can deride that show (except for those self-loathers which are everywhere,) it's the same thing except condensed and with attractive people.

edit:  Blonde isn't supposed to be funny, she's supposed to show cleavage which she does rather well.  Sheldon and the guy from Roseanne are the ones supposed to be funny.  The other two geeks are kinda played out and one dimensional.

No TV series will live up to what you've just watched, sorry.

Oz has many similar elements to the Wire though, and an almost astounding amount of crossover in terms of the cast.  The show is almost ruined by its patronizing liberal politics, but the drama between some of the characters is pretty gripping.

When I'm tired and angry after a long day of alternating between working and bottom-feeding on GAF, am I gonna want to sit down and watch a show that feels like the same thing? Nah.

very true.  I don't want to finish the show   :'(   It's pretty rewatchable though...so I could just spend my life going up to people, asking if they've seen the Wire, then converting them and watching it with them.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - fuck Deadwood.

Deadwood is only good for one season - the first one - after that it just becomes incredibly painful.  They turn up the Shakespearean dialogue to 11 in seasons 2 and 3 to the point where becomes a complete distraction.  It was like the writers became punch drunk with the positive press about the unique delivery in the show that they decided to beat the living shit out it for the remaining two seasons.  And speaking of those 2 seasons, so little actually goes on that you'll be better off staring at the wall for 24hrs than waste it on this.  Granted, season 3 had all the makings of great television and I was really enjoying it (minus the labored dialogue of course) but the last episode, the climax......holy fucking shit donkey.  What a fucking douchebag way to go out.  Anyone that actually liked that (and god knows I've seen people online actually trying to defend that BS) should have their testicles stapled to the drool cup that's hanging below their chins.  Galactically lame way to end a series.  It was like if at the end of Lord of the Rings at the siege of  Minas Tirith everyone just shook hands and went home.  The End. Roll credits.

I haven't seen The Sopranos either. I've heard some seasons/episodes are rather weak so I've been hesitant to spend money renting disks.

Plus I know how the finale ends due to obnoxious reports, often on programs that had nothing to do with tb shows. I remember trying to watch a basketball game on TNT shortly after the finale ended and the hosts were talking about the finale as if everyone had watched it, I watched some news on CNN or MSNBC and they mentioned it randomly. Turned on the radio and whoops, classic rock dj is talking about it. smh

S2 sucked...no getting around that. S3 was good but relied a bit too much on Hearst being a villainy villain. S1 is one the best seasons in TV history.

If the ending was abrupt it's because the show got canned and the three movies planned for after S3 were too.

Maybe the HBO Miniseries the Corner and Generation Kill? Haven't watch either of those 2 but only heard good things bout them.

Just finished Breaking Bad SE1, not as good as the Wire (no surprise there) but very entertaining. Sopranos off course though some episodes are extremly boring. If you like anime Death Note is a must see.

Comedywise there's a ton of good stuff. Eastbound and down really grew on me over the course of the few episodes, the Office, my favorite series ever Trailer Park Boys, the IT Crowd, Entourage, Arrested Development, Curb your.. and son on. Oh and It's always sunny in Philly. At first I hated the cast (for good reasons they're not supposed to be likeable) but damn some of the episodes where absolutely hilarious (When Dee and her brother try to get welfair for example or the A-Team one..)

I still liked The Shield better but the Wire is a damn good show.

Other than that, nothing really comes close.  Never saw Deadwood and Mad Men is vastly overrated.  It is one part classic, one part disposable soap opera.  A shame too.

CARNIVALE! has only two seasons too, so you'll be done quickly. s1 is mindblowingly awesome. s2 is still great. sadly ends on a sort of cliffhanger, which was inevitable though :/

Yeah, Carnivale ended when things were really heating up, which was a shame. I'd love to see where they were going next.

Also, it's been a few years, and it's likely tainted with a bit of nostalgia for me, but the old HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon" was a great watch, and never seems to get brought up in these threads. Each episode chronicled a different Apollo mission, in a dramatic fashion. I loved it, and I think it's pretty accessable, even if you're not into space/astronaut-y stuff.

Generation Kill starts slow but is definitely worth a look. It's very much a slightly-fictionalized documentary and shouldn't really be evaluated in the same terms as something like the Shield. (i.e. there are long stretches where not much of importance seems to happen, like in real life).

I think it's a pretty clever show occasionally, Sheldon is great and the blonde is nice to look at.

It's more like what a Hollywood writer thinks we talk about, after catching just enough of the lingo to make it seem superficially accurate. It's also unapologetic about casting them all as irredeemably socially damaged. I've watched three episodes while traveling business class, and even though it seems to be about my peer group, none of them would ever be flying business class, or they'd be complete dorks about riding in business. I dunno it was about as funny and tied to reality as Three's Company. Not exactly Wire follow-up material.

I didn't post it as a recommendation, I was just sticking up for it.  The fact that it's my favorite live action sitcom on TV currently isn't indicitive of it's overall quality.  It's nowhere near my top list of all-time sitcoms.

That said, I find it amusing that someone who would wade through gaf/eb for hours on end would be so vehemently opposed to the show.

Rome is very good, and I watched it with my wife a few months ago after the Wire. We've recently started the Tudors on Netflix streaming and it just doesn't quite stack up to Rome, although it is decent in its own right.

Yeah, Rome is pretty essential viewing. Keep in mind (at least for me), it started fairly slow without relating to the characters...that will change pretty quick though.

I'm coincedentally also starting up Generation Kill, I'm only 2 episodes in so I can't really say how these episodes compare to later ones, but I'm not sure if I'd call them slow. It seems to pretty accurately show what a bunch of marines on testosterone overload waiting to be unleashed would act like.

Their really aren't a whole lot of similarities to The Wire, but them being able to capture natural, if not always pleasant, dialogue is on full display.

But seriously It's a goddamn shame that maybe with exception of the UK (not even sure about that tough) nobody in good'ol europe even knows about this gem.

And @kafka: Just make sure that you watch till the last season and not quit before that (don't want to spoil anything but the second to last season was kinda boring) because that was one of the strongest one of the whole series.

Which brings me to the question what to watch if you've seen both the sopranos and the wire?

Already saw LOST, Heroes, Breaking Bad, Rome and I'm not remotely interested in Deadwood and Carnivale. Underbelly was not as good as expected (the idea of an australian mafia is rather amusing even if its supposed to be based on a true story ..)

Maybe Oz or the Shield? Is Trueblood any good?

She's probably not meant to be super hot.  If she looked too hot, she'd be unattainable.  I bet she's single in the show and seems kind of dumb/misguided...like she would go for the "nice" guy or wouldn't know she could do better.  That's how they manufacture women in "nerd" shows. Some weird psychology going on with the viewers.

Doesn't like chicks with boobs or shows about memes.  That's what I'm talking about.
