Where are the netbooks with nVidia Ion graphics chips?
« on: August 01, 2009, 05:12:30 PM »
Drinky and Eel told us to wait for these.  Yet here we are many months later with nothing to show.  There are desktops with Ions, but I can't find a single netbook.  Supposedly Lenovo announced one, but I can't find anything for sale on their website.

I think they're supposed to hit very soon (for some reason August comes to mind). The benefits from Ion seem to be worth the wait.

This is the only ION netbook that I've actually seen on the market, dunno if they're being sold anywhere else other than shady Hong Kong electronics districts though.

variety of reasons

- netbook market glut (several companies are halting new model netbook production until 2010)
- poor performance when paired with the current atom processor ("pineview" processor coming late this year/early next, seems to be a better match with ion)
- netbook guts being moved into larger "thin and light" sub-notebook market
- windows 7

On a sidenote -- are the Dell Mini9 and Mini10 netbooks really horrifyingly bad?  You can get them for like $250 on Dell's Outlet site, which seems like a pretty good price if I'm too impatient to wait for the Ion stuff.

wow, that's a good price

i have no experience with the dell netbooks

i'd like one of these if the processor wasn't gimped:

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-AO751h-1145-11-6-Inch-Netbook/dp/B002A6JYRM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1249188162&sr=8-1

11.6 inch seems like a perfect size for comfortable typing

I've futzed around with the Mini 9 and 10, my ex owns the 9 and a coworker has the 10v I think. The Mini 9 has pretty awful key placement (which I'm sure you've read about/seen already), but my ex swears she's used to it by now. The Mini 10 has a much better keyboard.

Build quality, screen and overall look on both laptops are fantastic. Makes me wanna sell off my plasticky MSI Wind. Watch out though if you're interested as there's some differences between the Mini 10 and the Mini10v, related I think to the processor, graphics chip and resolution.

Any word on when that sucker is gonna be out/how much it's gonna go for Arbys?  I really liked the size of the Acer 11.6" but the crappy processor nixed it for me.  Now this guy looks like it's a winner- even has the mouse buttons underneath the track pad unlike the other HP netbooks.

Nevermind, google is my friend.  "Soon" starting at $399 is the word.  Sounds good, but I'd probably want to stuff some more RAM into it...

I'm not too sure of the veracity of this article, but apparently it's a geforce 9400m.

Anyone else with any insight?

Couple of links I found:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-ion-atom,2153-6.html
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/zotac-ion-atom,2300-5.html

Looks like the processor is still the main bottleneck, but it's at least better than the crappy intel integrated stuff the old netbooks had.

If I could find one for $350 that would be sweet. I saw the old model at costco for $329. Just want something to troll the net on and maybe do a little skype.

Pretty much any netbook is good for that- no reason to shell out the extra dough if you don't need to take advantage of what it's offering relative to the rest of the field.

I'm in the opposite position- I want the advantages of an ion powered netbook and love the 11" screen, but don't want to shell out that much money.

all the atom n70/n80-based netbooks will price drop big next spring, is my guess

intel has some new "pinetrail" atom/netbook processors coming out around that time, they'll push that hard

probably be able to snag something like that hp ion for $300 or less by then

Any other ion stuff in the pipeline?

Or is everyone waiting for Windows 7 to launch?

Lenovo S12 and Samsung 510 should be coming out fairly soon-I think both were mostly gated by Windows 7.

Problem is that the commodity netbook marketplace is really, really crowded and the price wars this Christmas season are going to be really fierce. Heck, I expect to see some black friday deals with full-sized laptops nearing the same prices as netbooks.

What is the best netbook currently, if I don't care about the Ion?
