Do any modern MMOs not have a system of zoning?
« on: August 02, 2009, 05:00:45 AM »
I really want to play an MMO right now for some reason, but zoning really irritates me. I hate the feeling of moving from one boxed off area into the next in a linear fashion. The only MMO I ever played was Asheron's Call, and it had a completely open gigantic world. I was surprised and disappointed to find that this isn't the norm. All the modern MMOs I've tried have literally no element of exploration, and that's like my favourite part.  :-\

Lord of the Rings Online feels open but enemies and quests are generally self contained at first. Though, once you hit the desert area, there's an interesting switch off between multiple areas that seem to be for lv20-30 players. You should try it out.

LOTRO is one, but dungeons are still instances zones like WOW.

Vanguard is probably the closest to Asherons Call.

Vanguard sounds interesting. Any idea what the current population is like?

Edit: From what I've read the Vanguard population is horrible and the game is on its death bed. Kind of a bummer. I liked what I read about it.

LOTRO doesn't sound too bad either. If it's good enough I guess I could deal with instanced dungeons. I'm mostly looking for a big overworld to explore, so I wouldn't be too upset about that.
